Has anyone heard of this oven cleaning 'hack'?

I'm dubious, both from an effectiveness and safety point of view, but it does sound easy so I'm tempted! It's dishwasher tablets again but used a bit differently, so tablet in a bowl of boiling water, oven on at 100F and leave for an hour then (supposedly) a quick wipe round and done Hmm Toxic fumes are a concern possibly, damage to inside of oven? Mine is filthy and FB clearly knows it if it's throwing hacks at me but I'm not sure I'm brave (or stupid?) enough to try it. All thoughts welcome before I ruin my oven!

I have no particular qualifications to comment but I shouldn’t think the fumes would be all that toxic. Do you mean 100 centigrade?

WhatWouldJeevesDo · 30/10/2023 17:19

I suppose it’s an attempt to recreate the conditions in a dish washer so I don’t think it will work all that well.

Glovesandscarf · 30/10/2023 21:14

I wouldn’t bother. Bite the bullet, vacuum out the crap then oven pride it. Or I have often seen recommended the people who come to your house, haven’t ever tried them tho.

bossybloss · 30/10/2023 21:15

Buy an air fryer!

KateyCuckoo · 30/10/2023 21:21

Oooh don't use oven pride. Very corrosive and if you don't get every speck off it continues to eat away at your oven causing damage.

I get a guy in. Chemical free and he takes it apart, it looks phenomenal after and only £40.

jlpth · 30/10/2023 21:25

If you leave a thick coating of pink stuff on for about an hour and then scrub with a damp scrub daddy, it works fine. I did mine last week, having not done it for about 10 months so it was really filthy. Works on the door and inside.

i would stay away from heavy/toxic/stinking products.

What kind of pink stuff?

HakunaMatiÅ‚da · 30/10/2023 21:39

Best I’ve ever done is by using an oven scraper razor blade thingy. About a tenner from Amazon

There's a cleaning range called pink stuff. I think it's all vegan and free range and as environmentally friendly as you like.

Love 'The Pink Stuff'

Cardsonthetable · 30/10/2023 21:56

I got someone in to do mine. It looked amazing afterwards. Then it broke…

I use Astonish Paste and a sponge with the green scrubber bit .
I'm planning on cleaning my oven this week ( I;m on A/L this week so getting ahead for Christmas)

Top Tip- don't nother with the Mint Astonish . I bought some , its in a tin .
You cannot get the bloody tin open for love nor money .
But when you do it isn't worth the effort as the paste is pretty useless /

ScottBakula · 30/10/2023 22:14

I can't see how dishwasher tabs would clean your oven when used like that.
The heat and steam may soften things but you risk burning yourself when cleaning the oven .

I swear by lakeland oven cleaner, paint it on leave it for 30/60 mins and wipe it off

Moderateorgoodoccasionallyverypoor · 30/10/2023 22:19

I used is yesterday. The can still has loads left in it for future cleans.
Spray on, leave for 75 minutes, then wipe. I was very impressed, I thought I outdated have to really scrub but it came up pretty easily.

This is interesting! Can I ask how often you get it cleaned?
I'm looking at getting mine professionally cleaned but wondered if it's a "once a year" job or a "once a month" job.
I currently do mine (very loosely) about every 6 months

I get this done once a year after Christmas to get all the turkey fat out of it. I think it could probably benefit from being done more like every 8 months but I stretch it to the year.

I don't cook much meat though, so if you do you might need to do it more frequently.

SpringIntoChaos · 30/10/2023 22:32

@BeckhamSeven it is SO worth it! They come round in a small van with a kind of 'sheep dip' thing in the back. Take off ALL the loose parts of your hob and oven and plonk these in the 'sheep dip' and, whilst that's all having an acid bath, they clean the inside of your oven and hob.

It's so amazing when it's a finished! Sparkling clean!

I get mine done once a year in December...but I live alone and it stays pretty clean. If I needed to, I'd have it done twice a year. Costs me around £45.

Copperoliverbear · 30/10/2023 22:41

Oven cleaner man comes to the house

SkiingIsHeaven · 30/10/2023 22:43

Oven cleaning company come to do mine. The transformation is utterly amazing. Absolutely worth every penny.

Oven Pride or pay someone else to do it. I've been using Oven Pride for years, my oven isn't corroded.
I have Pink Stuff, it's good for some things, but doesn't make a dent in my oven, I suspect I'm more slovenly than the average Mumsnetter, my oven approaches biohazard territory.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/10/2023 23:58

I dip a dishwasher tablet into warm water and rub it over the over and wipe, works a treat.
