Help with DIRTY FLOOR! What am I doing wrong?

girlladywoman · 21/07/2023 20:22

So...

Weekly I sweep the floor and then go over with a dust cloth on the end of a mop thing and then I sometimes use wet wipes and then I mop with a floor cleaner.

AND MY FEET ARE STILL FILTHY FROM WALKING ON IT!

What type of floor do you have? If it’s flags you’re basically pushing custard uphill trying to get them clean! A strict no out door shoes policy does help.

Garman · 21/07/2023 20:25

How often do you mop it? Do you only sweep it weekly? Is it kitchen floor or other room(s)? Have you children/pets?

Whyohwhyohwhy123 · 21/07/2023 20:25

I hoover and mop daily if I want to keep on top of it. Twice a day sometimes.

NoSquirrels · 21/07/2023 20:27

I think you need to sweep and quick spot clean daily. Proper mopping weekly is OK, but we couldn’t leave it more than a day without sweeping.

No outdoor shoes also.

Azaeleasinbloom · 21/07/2023 20:28

Any pets? I rinse the mop out under a running tap before I put it back in the bucket of floor cleaner . I have a mix of solid wood and engineered wood. I use method for a quick clean and some sort of wood floor cleaner that’s diluted in the bucket once a week. Dry dust with an anti- static mop first .
I have dogs . Do my best to clean their paws, no outdoor shoes. Still a bugger to keep clean.

NoSquirrels · 21/07/2023 20:29

What we do is

Daily: Sweep, and sometimes also use the spray mop quickly if needed

Weekly (or thereabouts!): steam mop

MiladyBlue · 21/07/2023 20:30

Wear slippers.
Hoover it daily.
Do people wear shoes in the house?

I find shuffling over the floor with a towel to buff it dry after mopping makes a difference too.

haloangel · 21/07/2023 20:34

Once a week is definitely not enough. Im surpirsed you manage to go a week without sweeping.

  1. Sweep and quick spray mop daily.
  2. No shoes indoors.

I do the above and have never had dirty feet.

headcheffer · 21/07/2023 20:37

Is it Karndean? You need to ignore the manufacturer instructions and clean it with soapy water. I find otherwise it goes sticky and the dirt clings.

Exactly this. Floors can't go seven days without being cleaned and still be clean.

Piyo · 21/07/2023 20:41

Wear slippers indoors and outdoor shoes not on inside.

Hoover most days and steam mop 2/3 times a week

greenspaces4peace · 21/07/2023 20:44

Daily sweep or vacuum.
Shoes off
wash twice a week, more if needed.

Edwardandtubbs · 21/07/2023 20:49

Is it vinyl? I can sweep, mop, spray and buff etc but the only thing that actually gets it clean is a scrubbing brush with bleach solution, bit by bit down on all fours. Hence I constantly have a dirty floor. Wish I'd known before I got it put down....

ZairWazAnOldLady · 21/07/2023 20:51

What’s the floor made of?

MissyB1 · 21/07/2023 20:54

I vacuum it twice a week and mop once. Mine always looks awful, but it’s travertine tiles (previous owners put them down), they are a nightmare!!

Qbish · 21/07/2023 20:55

This is such a class thing. You're mopping once or twice a day? No shoes indoors?!

Bookish88 · 21/07/2023 20:58

If you have pets/kids, mopping just doesn't cut it IMO. We bought a vax hard floor cleaner and it was a game changer. Though we still have to do it every other day to keep on top of it.

blablablagobshite · 21/07/2023 20:58

Steam cleaner vax or karcher on low setting will sort it properly. Hoover it first. Bit of
zoflora in the steamer & it's sorted.

BasiliskStare · 21/07/2023 21:07

@girlladywoman

I am by no means a domestic goddess but hard floor kitchen would not manage a week without cleaning. So pretty much daily - sweep or vacuum and mop over if looks dirty. Sitting room floor (wood) can manage with more of just a sweep or hoover and a weekly clean with wood cleaner

I once had a steam cleaner - the green one which was heavily advertised - and all it did was piss out hot water and move the dirt around. . I find the very absorbent microfibre mops ( and the ones you attach a microfibre cloth to easier and more effective ( other opinions are available ) 😊

Can you use a Vax on Amtico?

Diddykong · 21/07/2023 21:16

Stop looking at your feet. Problem solved.

geoger · 21/07/2023 21:19

Hoover everyday (sometimes twice) and mop every other day (2 bucket method using boiling water and a drop of fairy liquid with a dash of Zoflora), then buff on hands and knees using microfibre cloths.
No shoes inside

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 21/07/2023 21:30

If it's textured at all, you're going to have to scrub it with a brush.

Can you get it properly wet? It's harder if it's laminate or something that can't get too wet. If my floor looks like it needs a proper clean I put a really wet and hot mop across it, leave it to soak for a few minutes, scrub over with a bristly brush / rubber broom, mop up the water (rubber broom is good to squeegee it) wash the mop and bucket out, and them mop over again with clean hot water to get any dirty water dregs mopped up.

I'd also bee sweeping more often, if I've read your OP right and you're only sweeping weekly? Or do you mean you sweep before mopping once a week, but just sweep more often?

I have the same regime and that works for me.
I have a no shoes policy and one cat😁

How is no shoes indoors a class thing? It’s a common sense thing surely?
I don’t want my house stomped all over with outside dirty shoes.
