Hello everyone, iWelcome back to our regulars, and if you are new or returning, a huge welcome to you as well! Please feel free to post or lurk, whatever helps you most.

This is an incredibly helpful thread and the system can be confusing but someone on here will be able to answer your questions and get you on track.

So, Flylady. That mysterious system that promises a lovely clean house! This link is a good place to read about the basic principles, but we strongly recommend ignoring the first bit - do not sign up for emails as you’ll be inundated!

www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/

If you’re new to the system, or are wanting a refresher course, the baby steps may be a good idea. Some are more useful than others, we’ve found, and stuff like affirmations may not work for you, so pick and choose what you want to try. You don’t have to do it all! Perfectionism can be left at the door, we celebrate any achievement here no matter how small it seems (this is why you’ll see our Ta Da lists as well as To Do lists!).

www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/31-beginner-babysteps/

There are parts of the house called zones, each taking a different part of the month, and missions in those zones to do little tasks we may have neglected. If you don’t feel ready for those though, a good way to start is doing 15 minutes decluttering in that zone! Remember it didn’t get messy in a day so it won’t be fixed in a day either. Slow and steady.

Then there’s the daily focus - each day of the week has a theme, although many of us switch them around to suit our own lives.

Each day I’ll provide the link to the launch pad, which is where you can see what is meant to be done that day (but again don’t feel you have to do all of it! That way lies burnout!).

A couple of principles we talk about on here are:
Future Friend - the idea of doing something today that benefits you later, such as choosing your clothes or making your lunch the night before.
Power of Three (po3) - if you’re overwhelmed, just pick three easy tasks - no matter how small - and forget about the rest until they’re done. Then reassess and decide another three.

Finally a few acronyms:
DW - dishwasher, not dear wife!
LOL - load of laundry, we aren’t finding washing hilarious
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer

I've name changed again, didn't care much for my previous one (UNP here).
Pompoms what's a wonderbag? It sounds like something I need in my life.
Red I wish my DH helped to unpack. If I wait for him to do it, both kids would be off to uni and we would still have boxes. All he does is complain these days. You can argue I am doing the same thing on here.

I did no housework today. House is a mess. Even more of a mess given it's only partially unpacked. It can wait until tomorrow.

HillsBesideTheSea · 02/03/2023 20:31

Shoulder red wrt the people. it is not optional. it is essential. <shrug> tis what it is.

icypompoms · 02/03/2023 20:56

@DomesticElf

A wonderbag is a South African bag that basically is a slow cooker that uses no power. So today I chopped all the veg for a chilli and drained the beans. I put the biggest saucepan I have on my job and cooked off the onions and garlic and chucked the veggies beans and spices in.

Bring it to the boil for five minutes then put the whole saucepan in the wonderbag and do it up. The food cooks in its own heat. We then ate it tonight and it was cooked and piping how.

So the wonderbag is pretty as well as practical Pompoms

I hate squeezing things in last minute. Hope you can recover your equilibrium tomorrow Perry

Elf I recommend counteracting that sort of thing with telling him he's a miserable old man and to shut up whining. Every single time. Even if he's only 20. Women are expected to be beacons of happiness and a delight at all times. That's incompatible with listening to constant moaning. There's no talking their way out of that one, though it can be amusing to watch them try

EspeciallyDedicated · 03/03/2023 08:04

@DomesticElf if nothing else works you can buy an enzyme spray in petshops that gets rid of cat wee smells.

@HillsBesideTheSea sorry to hear about the shoulder

Right, its my day off today. Need to go and do the food shop, yoga class, then taking DD to college (she's a bit under the weather and not feeling up to going on the train). Lots of paperwork to catch up on too.

FailingFlyFightingtoFlutter · 03/03/2023 08:47

I've dipped in and out of these threads under various UN but I do need this push, so going to follow you all and try and get a handle back on things.

Will do car and bag as suggested, that seems manageable. Happy Friday.

UsernameNotPresent · 03/03/2023 10:11

ED and Zoo thanks, I will have a look. I am pretty sure RugDoctor odor remover is enzymatic and it didn't work well 😥 I like the chair, so will exhaust everything before giving up.
Ditzy I may have to start doing that. He is mid 40s going on 70. At the moment I internally roll my eyes and try not to engage, but it is grating.

I am off today as working the weekend, and there is lots to be done. I think I will need to break things into PO3s, because at the moment I don't even know where to start 😂 (I just want to go to bed and sleep)

So to do:
💪Start writing job application
💪Load recycling to the car and take it to recycling centre
💪Load things in the car to go to the previous house

Next Po3:
💪Go to old house and defrost the fridge, final touches to get it ready to give the keys back
💪Unpack and organise 'spare supplies' cupboard, 'random crap' drawer, 'utilities cupboard', and 'Christmas/seasonal stuff storage'
💪Meal plan for the week

DomesticElf · 03/03/2023 10:19

Oops, username changed to previous one. C'mon, MN, work with me.

EspeciallyDedicated · 03/03/2023 10:32

Oh, yes that's the new MN feature, it reverts you back to whatever name you first posted on a thread with, I don't like it but most seem to according to the thread on site stuff.

HillsBesideTheSea · 03/03/2023 11:59

I suppose it is a way to help reduce sock puppeting. But yes it is an arse if you are making a sensible change that you want to keep.

FailingFlyFightingtoFlutter · 03/03/2023 12:22

I love it, but then I use different names for different areas of the site.

It will certainly help me not mess up with username confusion!

Welcome back to the thread @FailingFlyFightingtoFlutter

So far I've
✅got two kids sorted in world book day costumes and face paints
✅ judged an craft competition at school
✅ been to toddler group
✅ s&s
✅ tidied car
✅ had to eat a pasty with loads of brown sauce.

Tackled the TV unit that looked suspiciously like had a bit mould on...
End up throw it out, along 1/2 dvds in it(experience says in this house once it's got a hold bleach or anything else, cannot stop it returning quickly).
scrub a square of black mould off wall with bleach too

Added wooden shoe rack, and a mirror to pile of things outside to go

Then had note in door council are start guttering work Monday please ensure all access to front and back of property.

operation mad panic I had to borrow money to get a clearance man to come as side is awash with binbags and furniture...

thankfully in the area,it's all been sorted today as wasn't deemed "a huge job"

speak ASD team about lil zoo(officially now has diagnosis)discuss school(it rather lack attendance) and agree I need sort ehcp<adds to never ending to do list>

DomesticElf · 03/03/2023 15:29

Ah, I see re username. I don't change them often, I just didn't like my other one. Clearly imagination was on leave that day.

Zoo you can do it. Sending coffee.

PO3 progress:
💪Start writing job application - STARTED (will take a few days to finish)
💪Load recycling to the car and take it to recycling centre - DONE
💪Load things in the car to go to the previous house - DONE

💪Go to old house and defrost the fridge, final touches to get it ready to give the keys back - DONE.

When I lived in a housing association house they gave me some stuff to treat the mould. We'd paid out so much on solutions and stripped the wallpaper and redecorated so it was only fair that as landlords they started to pull their weight.

Sorry if you've already said you've tried this but is it worth hassling them regularly?

FailingFlyFightingtoFlutter · 03/03/2023 12:22

I love it, but then I use different names for different areas of the site.

Whereas I have never used different names for different areas with one or two exceptions about my DCs schools but I NC regularly and now I’m on a different name on every thread (mostly I only post on long-running ones) which is really irritating.

DitzyDaffodils · 03/03/2023 18:11

ED I like the new feature with usernames. I name change on a whim, sometimes frequently, but I don't like to confuse people so I keep the same username for an entire thread even if I've actually changed it. It's why you lot get all my new usernames, because there's a new thread each month. The new system means I don't have to remember to return to an old username for a particular thread because it's automatically done for me. I hardly post on any threads though, perhaps I'd feel differently if I posted on lots.

I don't know what sock puppets are Hills but whenever I venture out of my Threads I'm On/Watching lists into the wider world of Mumsnet I'm convinced a lot of posters are trolls. So many people sniping at each other for no reason

Refusing to conform to society's expectations Zoo? How rebellious of you 😉 If the damp problem is the gutters overflowing hopefully the mould situation will improve as the walls dry out. I'm sorry you're losing furniture to it. It's a health hazard having so many mould spores in the air.

Welcome back Fly. I find posting here really helps me. I think I remember you under a different username (but still Fly)?

Busy day Pompoms but sounds fun.

Elf I have more!

If the complaints are about the cost of things (as if he's never heard of price rises or inflation) another good tactic is to add your own complaint onto the end of theirs. So you listen to the moan then say something like "it's awful. And the price of bread today! It was only tuppence ha'penny in 1943". He'll shut up once he realises what a prat he's being. "I'm sure I'm being scammed...the last time I bought one of these it was half this price and twice the quality!". "Yes dear, when you were 25 - some time in the 1980s?...things have changed a bit since then."

If it's a petty complaint about work, tell him to be sure to contact the union first thing, you're certain they're gearing up to send him up the chimney tomorrow.

If it's a ridiculous complaint about a person, look at him like a spaceship just landed in front of you and tell him the phone number for the GP is on the noticeboard and there's medication for paranoia.

If he complains about having to park under the tree today where the birds will poo on his car, tell him to write to his MP.

Stop validating him with your time and energy and it'll stop. You're not an emotional cesspit for him to dump his frustrations into.

EspeciallyDedicated · 03/03/2023 19:21

I'm always ED so regulars on the threads can tell who I am (I normally change on the 1st of the month to coincide with this thread). It looks as though I'm in a minority on this one, but I really am not keen on names I ditched months ago resurfacing.

FailingFlyFightingtoFlutter · 03/03/2023 20:54

In that case ED it should be that it remembers the last name you used on a thread, this wouldn't really make any difference to sockpuppeting as they would still need to change.

Ditzy I post of far too many and have long running threads I use where I want people to know who I am.

But all this above points to my real problem and why I am here. Procrastination. It is a killer.
