Anyone else rocking the housework?

My housekeeping was always somewhat chaotic, and since these were launched, my house is far more functional and a podcast away from actually looking rather orderly, even at short notice.

I tend to pick what I need each day rather than following the tradtitonal TOMM, but do refer back to that to help get some jobs done if they're in danger of being neglected.

I think my most used tracks are the "Calm Laundry Put Away" the "Bitesize Bathroom Blitz" and the "Quick Kitchen Turnaround"

Bitesize cleans saving the day today. Amazing how much fresher it can be in 5 minutes per room.

There's some bigger jobs that need doing but life keeps getting in the way.

I'm in mission mode. A scurryfunge can be 3 days for an unusual, short-notice visitor can't it? 😂

I used the Spring Clean declutter and a variety of other sessions to break the back of downstairs yesterday. Same for today for the upstairs. I ended up doing it as a declutter/ deep clean of my bedroom and now working through the other bedrooms with more targeted cleans. DH will be wanting to show off his DIY projects over recent years so nothing is safe.

Tomorrow I can use the multi-room cleans to do light freshen ups so it's all brought together at the end.

I could rebel, but there are benefits to having a targeted purge of the house anyway.

It's times like this that I really appreciate the efficiency and calm of doing the podcasts, plus the starting point is rarely as chaotic as it was before Gemma launched them.

I'm just clinging on to some semblance of normality at the moment. We are in the midst of a particularly grotty round of COVID, meanwhile the en-suite is still unfinished and the project overspill is reaching new levels of bluegh. I'm focusing on the basics - food, laundry and some token gestures of cleaning. We have, I expect, descended well below a pre-Gemma intervened home 🤦🏼‍♀️

The Spring Clean week looks brilliant and I'll use it to whip the house into shape when this passes. By the time the kids go back to school I want everyone healthy, the house back to normal and everything clean and in place again.🤞🏼

On the upside, our biohazard situation has entirely excused us from all social obligations!

BogRollBOGOF · 30/03/2024 20:16

It helps knowing that the situation will be redeemable when the time comes to catch up.

We haven't had an entirely healthy household in 2 months now. DS's attendance last half term must have been about 70%. He ended up in A&E for two totally different issues in a month. I'm hoping we've turned the corner now...

Time to get back on it before post-visitors civilisation breaks down.

The 20 minute rumble looks like a good choice and I can bite-size any extras.

OP posts:
FourTeaFallOut · 03/04/2024 18:30

I did the hour long kitchen spring clean yesterday - a bit of a cheat because I hadn't done any of the earlier ones in that run but it felt good to get stuck in. I haven't seen the 20 minute rumble so I'll take a look at it this evening.

Hope your little one gets a run of good health and you get to have a proper post- visitor r&r.

BogRollBOGOF · 04/04/2024 08:06

I had the smug two days of basking in a show home 😂

The Rumble did the job of refreshing the downstairs and maintaining it.

The one messy room is the utility so that's today's mission.

OP posts:
FourTeaFallOut · 04/04/2024 12:58

Smug days are the very best days! 😁 I suspect they may be some way off for me but I am making a start again.

Never got to the 20 minute clean yesterday but I did do the hour long Spring Clean day 1 declutter. But now I have a boot load for the charity shop and I have half filled the bin which is less than ideal because it's emptied on a Wednesday 😬 So I definitely won't be doing an upstairs declutter tomorrow, that way madness lies.

We are in spitting distance of finishing the bathroom. What a bloody nightmare that was but we are one of two days away to resigning it to history.

Remindmeofababe · 04/04/2024 19:00

Hi @FourTeaFallOut and @BogRollBOGOF do you access the audio cleans via the app or the patreon thing? They sound great but tje reviews of the app aren't great. Also sympathy on the reno work. Kitchen project is never endingggggggg

FourTeaFallOut · 04/04/2024 19:32

I use the app, I'm not even sure if patreon is an option anymore? I haven't had a problem with it but I only ever use the version with the default music, so maybe that's saved any issues? The actual guided cleans are exactly the same and I find they are great for motivation and making the time go quicker.

Kitchen projects are the pits - anything that forces you to wash up pots in the bath is officially the worst!

BogRollBOGOF · 05/04/2024 09:22

I'm still on Patreon. I find the cleans through the website https://www.rockthehousework.co.uk/ which is a bit more structured than the app. I did try the app a while ago and too many of my favourites were missing at that point, and the search isn't great.

I've got tip-runs to do. The Easter holiday isn't great timing for that job though.

Kitchens and bathrooms are hard-going. We've got a bathroom in the pipeline. I like the idea of the outcome, but it's going to be a big one... walls will move, and that's going to be a lot of plaster dust.

OP posts:
FourTeaFallOut · 08/04/2024 10:36

Well I might have been too quick out of the blocks last week and I'm being hammered with some stubborn post covid fatigue and everything seems to be hard work. I'm laying off any grand spring-clean designs and back to basics.

In an effort to keep things rolling, I'm doing the house wind down and wake up set to get a gentle routine going. I'd actually forgotten how good these were - it's like the overlap on a venn diagram between Gemma's 'get things done' death stare and the soothing hair stroking of the flylady method.

BogRollBOGOF · 09/04/2024 08:45

I hope the fatigue eases soon. It does help that you can get results in such short sessions.

It's a bit weird here in camp Bogroll as one's back in school and one on holiday, so a partial return to routine. Some things are on and some off. This holiday feels like it's gone on forever, but that's because DS was ill in/out of school for so much last half term and it's all blurred.

I haven't had a full business as usual week since January!

OP posts:
BogRollBOGOF · 14/04/2024 14:22

2 weeks post-visitors and all still civilised 😇😂
We had a babysitter over and a 20 minute rumble was enough to get things back in order.

Term fully returns this week.
I have tip runs to fit in.

OP posts:
BogRollBOGOF · 23/04/2024 07:12

How are we all doing?

We seem to (touch wood) have some normality here at long last...

Loving the new dishwasher session. When it's clean, needs emptying and re-filling, it never quite fits in the dish allocation of kitchen cleans, whereas the 10 min session is perfect, and it's one of thise never-ending, tedious tasks (I'm sure that's a Gemma wording from a laundry session 😂 )

Generally ticking over in average mode at the moment.

I did my normal level 1s yesterday, listening to the RTH guided cleans even for that when I know it off by heart just helps get me motivated and stick to timings. Also did the upstairs clean at the weekend.
@FourTeaFallOut what do you mean by the house wind down and wake up set? Is that an actual guided clean?! Or do you mean a particular evening clean or sth? Thanks.

FourTeaFallOut · 24/04/2024 09:18

It's the Dreamy House Wind Down and the Happy House Wake Up and they are on the Keep me Company section on TomRocks.

It's just two quick 15 minute routines that wrap up the evening and get things off to an organized start on the morning. It's all I really had in me at the time but the rhythm of the routine was really useful and I've struck with it now I'm back in the swing of things.

I'm really close to having the whole house back into shape again. Ideally, I'd get into a bit more decluttering, particularly the kids clothes which seem to hang around long after the have outgrown them and the pantry, which is a jumbled mess of unused storage containers and dry goods rammed around the outside of them 🫣

But the house is clean and tidy which is a win.

FourTeaFallOut · 28/04/2024 17:11

Does anyone have a way of doing a 'my favourites?' It feels like I'm always having to hunt around for the same old things and if you use the search you have to be quite careful not to use an additional space or, for example, remember to use vacuum rather than hoover or it won't pull up the right thing. It's not a deal breaker but I just wonder if there's a thing I'm missing or if you can do it from Patreon?

FourTeaFallOut · 28/04/2024 17:15

Don't mind me, being dense, just figured it out 🤦🏼‍♀️

Edited

I still favour using the website to link into Patreon, it's got more categories than the app.

Presumably the app is more profitable as the fee is direct rather than Patreon taking a cut.

I'm just in the habit of knowing what I'm looking for.

I need to give the kitchen some post-weekend love, and shift some laundry through the system. Everything else is functional.

FourTeaFallOut · 29/04/2024 14:00

Yeah, I quite liked patheon but I've finally got organized on Tom and I'm tee-ing up the cleans I'm going to be using across the week on my favourites on a Sunday. I'm am determined to get back on plan so I've done my level ones (with the bathroom rather than kitchen focus because, well, three boys) and the living room is cleaned top to bottom. I've launched myself back in mid cycle, so apparently the Friday Focus is the Hallway which honestly feels like a cheat week for me but I'll manage 😁

I made the mistake of having a nose around the 'clean with me's' on YouTube yesterday while my youngest was at a party and holy hell, I have proper house envy now. And, I was amazed (read envious) at the amount of product and lovely scents the average joe can swash around the house without collapsing into an asthmatic heap.

But, in a half arsed attempt to do something similar, I'm going to try my hand at making a homemade room spray with lemon and rosemary, witch hazel and distilled water. I'm not telling anyone in real life because I will be subjected to eye-rolling but I'm here in my housekeeping safe space 😉

Amore2 · 30/04/2024 06:21

@FourTeaFallOut ’my housekeeping safe space’. 😊😊 i have found my tribe! 🤣I have to confess to having made my own room sprays for my home and classroom. I don’t talk about it in general company either as it sounds so worthy 🤣Lemon essential oils and water but after a while it goes ‘off’ ie the lemon smell deteriorates, does witch hazel keep
stop that? I shall Google!

Have a good day all.

Got up earlier today so have done:

Dishwasher emptied ✅
Folded 1 lol that was drying on airer ✅
Swish and swipe main bathroom and ensuite ✅
Made mine and DH’s bed (DH working away room got now) ✅

Better to get it done in the am for me but does not always happen. Feeling much more organised and comfortable right now but know it will all change once rush for work and school starts. Sometimes I do L1s at end of day, just depends how I am feeling.

Good luck, all. Just do 10 minutes is my new mantra!! 🙏

FourTeaFallOut · 30/04/2024 15:23

I think, and I'm hesitating to say this now that you are potentially a science teacher 🧐, that the witch hazel makes the scent last longer because it helps to bind the water to the oil?

Level ones and twos done. I even did a bit of bonus decluttering. The sun has been playing ball so the bedding is washed and dried. 👍🏼

FourTeaFallOut · 03/05/2024 13:43

So I ended up cleaning the car as a level 3 Friday task but I can't, for the life of me, get the crud out of the carpet. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong because it wasn't for lack of effort but there was no hoover attachment to beat it. On the upside, it is a decluttered oasis now and everything bar the floor is much nicer.
