Anyone else rocking the housework?

My housekeeping was always somewhat chaotic, and since these were launched, my house is far more functional and a podcast away from actually looking rather orderly, even at short notice.

I tend to pick what I need each day rather than following the tradtitonal TOMM, but do refer back to that to help get some jobs done if they're in danger of being neglected.

I think my most used tracks are the "Calm Laundry Put Away" the "Bitesize Bathroom Blitz" and the "Quick Kitchen Turnaround"

What's different about the Patreon content from the normal content? I need to sort myself out but have had bad experiences trying to cancel online rolling content so I've not signed up.

I'm not sure as far as I know with the £3.60 u can assess all the content (all the timed cleans) I think there maybe free ones u can see what it's about. So i downloaded patron app and went to rock the housework and paid there

Rainbowsandbutterflies1990 · 01/07/2023 12:55

*guided cleans/timed cleans

They are fab. My only complaint is that it's trickier to find the cleans on the Patron Pp but if I go on via the rock the housework website the cleans always stop playing part way through and it interrupts the flow as then have to go back in and restart. Anyone else find this?

I don't have the patreon app so I only do it on the site after going through the RTH page. Mine does sometimes pause but I've realised that this occurs because my podcast player does something ... i don't know what but I see the play icon flash up, so that's what makes mine glitch - do you have a podcast app installed?

BogRollBOGOF · 01/07/2023 23:18

I signed up the week they were launched 😂
I instantly loved the initial samples and couldn't believe how effective they made me, thought hard for 30s and decided that it was the best £3.60 per month that I'd ever spend!

It is timed instructions with a bit of chat and music, so 5 mins declutter, 3 mins dusting, 2 mins sofa dive, 5 mins vacuuming type thing.
There's loads of them. Some following the plan, many off-piste. Multi-room, additional rooms, short 5 mins, up to an hour, seasonal series...

My theme the past week has been decluttering and using the Clutter Buster series. Plus a good blitz on a DC's room. The daily rooms are struggling a bit as a result, but they are easier to retrieve for it, and the rest of the house will function better as a result of the decluttering despite the short term hit.

For anyone erring, it is better value to sign up to Patreon content at the start of the month as the payment is taken then and you'll get your month's worth.

My decluttering theme has continued this week. Wednesday's drop of Dirty 30 would have been perfect on Monday as it hit the daily rooms that were looking neglected, but I found the Downstairs Catch Up helpful. The Productive Hour helped with the decluttering. I've got most of what I'm keeping stored away now, got the trash out and now need a couple of charity shop runs to finish off- I have got some out as I've gone, but this week's been all over the place.

There are other parts of the house benefiting from the sort and clearout as it's pulled mis-placed so it is benefiting. Last week was depressing as the sort heaps didn't go down as I was pulling relevant items from other rooms.

When this is finally finished, there's a few rooms that would benefit from some deeper clean sessions. I seem to have aquired some spiders that rapidly make really irritating cobwebs 😂

If you're decluttering I recommend looking at Dana White of a Slob Comes Clean. Her only progress method is game changing. There's no pulling stuff from one room to put it into another. I put on her audiobook or you tube channel while I declutter.

On Friday I finished rhe classic TOMM 8 week cycle! I showed up every. Single. Day. Still have clutter but the house is cleaner than it's ever been and the feeling of pride I have in seeing how good it is motivates me more! I'm starting the cycle again tomorrow with the same recordings because I loved having a guide!

BogRollBOGOF · 09/07/2023 19:12

I came across Dana K White shortly before Rock the Housework launched and she's been really helpful.

When doing a standard decluttering session, either as part of a regular clean or dealing with a "hotspot" (yes, I'm aquainted with Fly Lady too 😂) I tend to do it Dana style now rather than Gemma's bunch it up and put it away after. I like not being left with a new pile when my attention span shuts down at any random point

I also do a Marie Kondo style "thank you" when parting with items which helps with my sentimental side.

This time I've done it differently because it's been about establishing the storage in my catch-all room, so things that were either temporaily stored elsewhere, and stuff that's drifted needed to be brought back in so that I can see what space/ containers have been required. I suppose that's been a bit Kondo-ish.

To finish off, old boxes/ folders that have potential for re-use need to head up to the loft, and I need to finish my charity shop runs. It should all be useable before the summer holidays!

OP posts:
BogRollBOGOF · 14/07/2023 17:15

And the charity shop runs are done 😊

I've done some deeper cleans in other rooms too. It seems to be a spidery year already, and some are very cobwebby!

You're an inspiration Bogroll !
I've been subscribed since May 2022 but have only listened around five times. I'm going to jump back in on Monday with one of the living room choices. House is a complete mess so I need to do something!

BogRollBOGOF · 26/07/2023 10:27

Motivation collapsed now.
Must get back in gear. Clutch is clearly bust 😂

I even know what podcasts I can use, but the body ain't shifting easily.

OP posts:
BogRollBOGOF · 26/07/2023 19:36

I got into gear in the end and did a Super Quick Spruce Up covering the hall, kitchen, lounge and bathroom which was enough to make things feel comfortable again. Good value for half an hour.

I had been my future friend and had the dishwasher set to go off first thing, and it's had another round timed to go off mid-afternoon to catch the lunch things going in.

Traditionally the house spent the summer gradually descending into chaos and needing a huge reset in September, but last year I did manage to keep going with Rock the Housework. It's much easier just putting the headphones on and getting into that headspace now.

LexieLoos · 27/07/2023 12:19

Well done @BogRollBOGOF
I've just done yesterday's hallway clean and am about to start today's kitchen - I'm definitely going to need more than one round for the kitchen though so may use a longer clean 😰

BogRollBOGOF · 31/07/2023 10:20

Today's new one looks good. I need to get in gear. I'm on the tail end of a draining, achy cold so haven't been motivated since halfway through last week.

Last week's laundry session needs a try out too. I've got a backlog of clean stuff... and dirty too, but shifting the clean will "unblock" me and get things flowing again. I'll start with that one actually. Easy win.

I started reading this thread about a fortnight ago and gave the rock the housework free trial week a whirl and I'm hooked.

Although, tbf, I'm not very compliant and go off and do my own thing during the session. (I can't be the only person who has to hand wash some stuff even though most goes in the dishwasher?) But I like being jollied along and staying on track.

I'm going to use it just to keep on top of the house for now but I think I'll use it to get decluttered though September. And I've noticed the Christmas ones so, I might stick it out for a while 😁

I like the way that I can quietly freestyle what needs doing and rebel, but have that structure in place to actually get me doing something productive.

I found that I kept the house much more livable last summer compared to usual. Normally the first couple of weeks of term in September were about sorting out the chaos.
Things weren't great yesterday morning, but doing a series of short sessions including the new multi-room clean has got it to a state where I'd be happy for a friend to spontaneously walk in. It's still not in-law clean, but that's not going to require busting a gut to achieve... which is handy as they're coming at the weekend 😂

I saw a nice video about someone cleaning a few weeks back and she'd start a to do list of 3 items. Tick one off, then add one. Only 3 live items at a time, but the list of done items adds up. It was the first time I'd seen that technique and I tried it yesterday, and it worked really well for getting around multi rooms and shifting a laundry bunch up.

Focus for today: refresh bedrooms using a multi room clean. Shift through some laundry.

Ah, in-law clean 😁 I have my in laws visiting for a couple of weeks right now and it wasn't a coincidence I picked up up the baton when I did. Did I mention the benefit of wearing headphones while you clean? Wish me luck.

May the Force be with you!

I have different levels of clean...
C grade: my friends- toilet has been de-boyed, kitchen functional, seats and main floor space clear. My friends tend to have similar standards 😂
B grade: my family- generally clean and tidy. Clutter zones in unobtrusive corners tolerated
A grade: in-laws, actually dealing with those corners. Almost show home- in public areas anyway. Traditionally involves a blowing of temper along the way and stamping of feet as the stress levels exceed my capacity.

I haven't had a housework related meltdown since Rock the Housework was launched, and I don't get that resentful, frustrated anger that I always had about housework. I now just have to make it so many minutes better. It doesn't have to be "done" or perfect and it means that I don't end up burning out trying to achieve something that doesn't last longer than 6 hours. I still go in motivated peaks and troughs, but it's not as extreme, and because there's much more consistency, it's not as deep trying to sort out those bottlenecks and clutter zones because they're dealt with more often.

OP posts:
FourTeaFallOut · 02/08/2023 14:42

I am C grade for my family and B grade for my friends, A- grade for in-laws and Defcon 1 for Christmas and house selling. Think I'm going to get back into a TOMM schedule in Monday rather than my pick and mix approach.

BogRollBOGOF · 02/08/2023 19:08

I resolve to never need Defcon 1 for Rightmove. This house will last me until I'm carted off to an old peoples' home or undertaker 😂

To be fair it is pretty well laid out and located to support such notions.
(Unlike DM's who is a good cautionary tale against hoarding and poorly laid out houses)

I've done my outdoor space this week. I have a very clean and shiny frontage now. I don't think I have seen it that clean before. I've had the pressure washer out and now the brickwork's looking much brighter. Pretty good with all the dingy weather around! At least with all the wet weather, I don't feel like I've wasted water to do it.

OP posts:
FourTeaFallOut · 06/08/2023 14:10

I did the Can't be Arsed podcast today and neatened things up a bit and the self care one - it's been one of those days. I'll put a laundry one on tonight which clears the deck to hit the ground running with TOMM tomorrow. I think that drops me on to a brand new cycle, which I can start at c-grade! 🎉

Well done for getting the front door done! I have to admit I'm glad that's not this week, it's weed-maggedon out there and I'm all out of stoic grit.

BogRollBOGOF · 08/08/2023 16:02

Downstairs Catch Up done with an interlude of laundry with DS who apparently always needs help chucking his stuff into drawers.

It was a good combo. It started with laundry which was good for switching between machines, and grouping some clean stray stuff that was claiming squatter's rights in the utility. Then the 7min freestyle in the kitchen was enough to ease bottlenecks in the kitchen with the bins and dishwasher. 7min tidy in the kids' den & lounge, then 7min freshening up the floors which was a good get round the middle lap.

I'm having a break then will move onto the Hallway Turnaround. Some clutter has got stuck there. It looks bad, but I think that 20 mins will nail it as it's mainly superficial. A Kitchen Turnaround should be enough in there too.

I'm feeling clean enough not to need to get onto the correct L2s this week. It's more superficial untidiness rather than dusty/ cobwebby in the corners.
