What is your process for folding & putting away laundry

tiredbuthappyx · 18/09/2022 11:49

I don't have a utility room so have pretty limited space to do it.

At the minute I fold clothes and put them into one laundry basket, then take them straight upstairs to put them away.

I'm wondering if it would make more sense to have one small basket for each person and separate it by person downstairs before taking each one up. However it might increase trips up and down stairs so save no time at all!

I carry everything up in a big basket and tip it onto our bed.

DC have one of those big Aldi shopping bags each for all their stuff, DH and I have a pile on respective sides of the bed.

Sort everything on the bed. DC’s bags put on the landing for them to collect. Nag daily until they pick them up.
DC use the same Aldi bag to bring their dirty laundry back downstairs, to encourage them to actually empty it and put stuff away.

Chdjdn · 18/09/2022 12:20

When I fold the laundry I do it in piles within the basket so once upstairs it’s easy to put a pile into each room

Yarnosaur · 18/09/2022 12:21

Everyone has their own basket, whoever is about folds it and puts it back in the basket, owner puts stuff away. When we had white work and school shirts, we had a whites basket and did a weekly whites wash.

BertieBotts · 18/09/2022 12:27

I live in a flat. We have 5 people and we also store towels, cleaning cloths etc in the hallway.

I either fold straight into the basket, making two piles within the basket, when I find clothes for a third (+) person, I put them on the smaller pile and then move that mini pile to the other side if I need the first pile again.

Or I pull everything into the basket at once and bring it to the living room and fold into piles by room.

Or if I have hung to dry, I fold into piles on the bed.

Turquoisa80 · 18/09/2022 12:33

I dry on a washing line, bring clothes in, take straight upstairs and empty on my bed. Then ask the kids to fold and put away.

SudocremOnEverything · 18/09/2022 12:36

Process? 🤣🤣🤣

you are setting the bar far too high. My laundry is doing well if it ever gets put away.

Oblomov22 · 18/09/2022 12:55

I put into piles in the lounge. It's ds2's job to take said 4 piles up to everyone's bedroom.

KangarooKenny · 18/09/2022 12:57

I fold it in the lounge using the settee as my folding table. I put them in individual piles, put them on the stairs, and no one picks their pile up as they pass. So I have to put their pile on their bed.

woodhill · 18/09/2022 12:57

I'm very lucky as I have a side in a utility room to air stuff on. Afterwards It gets put in the ironing basket or in a basket and sorted on the bed upstairs

Ds goes in a separate basket into his room

HorribleHerstory · 18/09/2022 13:05

I don’t fold clothes really.
cllothes come out of the washing machine and straight onto hangers which are then hung to dry inside or out depending on weather. They are taken straight to wardrobes on hangers and put in, the empty hangers come down and we go around again. Knickers and bras and things just go straight in drawers, no folding. The only thing that gets folded is towels and bedding. And that gets folded whilst on the washing line, eg folded whilst draped over it because it’s easier and then taken inside to the airing cupboard.

mondaytosunday · 18/09/2022 13:08

Erm....
The machine is at the top of the stairs in a hall closet I enlarged to house it. But it's too tempting to drape the clothes over the bannister. My daughter will collect hers when it gets to critical mass and is about to tumble to the floor.

Beanniebaby22 · 18/09/2022 13:18

Bring it into the living room and sort into piles on the coffee table while I watch tv. Then take it upstairs to put in whatever room it belongs.

meateatingveggie · 18/09/2022 13:21

Get it off the line in piles. First all the ironing which goes in a basket.

The rest comes off person by person and goes straight to their rooms folded to be put away.

I can't be doing with sorting

Cats23 · 18/09/2022 13:25

Wash, in to tumble ( during winter) , line in summer then in to have a 5 min tumble, everytjing in basket...left a few days (or more) Fold in to seperate baskets for each person, take up to bedrooms, left a few days (or more) put away!
Im not v.good at folding and putting away straight away at all- Big problem!!

ThatsNiceEh · 18/09/2022 13:28

I guess my system is just what most people do, as it's logical. I take it off the line, fold it into the basket, take it into the bedroom and sort into piles. Dh puts his away, I put mine and dds away.

Same here.
Can’t understand all the fucking about folding.

whoruntheworldgirls · 18/09/2022 14:27

Out of machine on to line/into tumble dryer, pull it all out, tip on to my bed and fold into piles, put mine and 6yr olds away, leave husbands for him to do.

Filleto · 18/09/2022 14:31

Take item off line/airer, fold it. Create a pile per person which is taken immediately to the correct room. Mine I put away immediately and younger dc either immediately or when I’m next in their room (eg bedtime). Everyone else puts their own away

TrashPanda · 18/09/2022 14:38

Out of the tumble dryer and onto bed or sofa depending on which is empty. When someone needs to use said bed or sofa it gets moved to the big plastic storage tub or top of the chest of drawers depending on what has space. It might go back and forward between bed/sofa and chest/tub a few times when I say I'm going to put it away, then don't. Individual items get pulled out as needed and new stuff added each time I do a load until about 6 loads later I lose my shit, put it all away, and start again.

RoseDog · 18/09/2022 14:40

I take it off the line/airer/out the dryer then dump on dining table...there isn't really a step after that...

Minesril · 18/09/2022 14:47

Airer upstairs on the landing. Clothes are pulled off and chucked in the direction of DS's rooms, where it's put away after much nagging (I do the toddler...eventually). DHs stuff goes next to our bed and mine goes away!
When stuff is line dried it sits in a large, untidy but nice-smelling pile until I can be bothered to sort it (or persuade the 8 year old; he doesn't mind that much!).

Thinkingblonde · 18/09/2022 15:02

I dry it on the airier or line depending on the weather. Fold it when comes off the airier then put into a huge B&M, each person has a pile.
if towels or sheets are involved the go at the bottom of the bag, clothes on top.
If still damp off the line they go onto the airier, some need ironing, most don’t say the into the drawers etc, stuff that needs ironing goes onto the ironing pile which stands at three feet high. If the pile reaches the window ledge or it topples over the iron gets pressed action.
DH tell everyone if has any money to hide he hides under the iron as I’d never find it.

Then when we run out of clothes, put away about 10 loads at one time. 😀

MinervaTerrathorn · 18/09/2022 15:08

Put clothes in ikea bag, bring in and put on correct bed. Sometimes one of us brings them in together, sometimes I bring in mine and empty the bag then DS gets his.

MaChienEstUnDick · 18/09/2022 15:17

There are three of us and we each have our own clean washing basket, which live in the same room as the heated airier. I fold off the airer into each basket and each person is responsible for putting their own stuff away. When I line dry I take it off in piles then stick into the baskets as above.
