Hi all,
So I have recently moved into my new house and this is how the toilet is (yuk!). I am just wanting to know what I can use to clean it? And what to do to stop this coming back?
TIA x

Wow. Bleach bleach and more bleach. Left for hours and then a lot of scrubbing and more bleach.

chinuptitsoutonwards · 04/09/2022 09:49

bleach! Bleach bleach!

you may not actually need to scrub that. Leave it overnight and see how the stains come up.

Dontstoprunning · 04/09/2022 09:52

I'd put a limescale sachet down there - oust is good and you can get it in the supermarket.
Then I'd bleach and scrub.
To prevent it you just need to regularly put a product down there - harpic black overnight should be ok.

LemonMuffins · 04/09/2022 09:52

Black harpic. Leave for a good 30 mins. It's a miracle worker.

maranella · 04/09/2022 09:55

And if none of that works, order yourself a bottle of HG Limescale Remover from Amazon. It's very concentrated and you need to wear gloves so you don't get it on your skin, but it will get even the most encrusted and filthy limescale off porcelain.

TheOldLadyOfThreadneedleStreet · 04/09/2022 09:55

Sympathies OP, we had the same last year when we moved into our rental. It took many attempts but mine is now pristine, I used harpic tablets which you drop in and leave and are very good.

gamerchick · 04/09/2022 09:59

Ffs bleach doesnt clean! It's BLEACH. It's not going to shift limescale

Get some harpic, use a brush to push the water under the Ubend and get some gel on it. Leave for a bit and then scrub. Repeat the process.

Before bed and everyone's last pees. Drop a couple of steridents in overnight. It's literally just keeping at it until it's all off.

LegoLady95 · 04/09/2022 10:04

Remove the water from the pan by soaking a cloth and wringing out. Then put a limescale remover in and leave overnight. This means the product is not diluted by water. Flush in the morning and may need to repeat again

Sparklfairy · 04/09/2022 10:08

The only thing bleach is going to do is... bleach it Hmm

You can try harpic. Push the water up the u bend by shoving a toilet brush down a few times to get the level as low as possible. Then leave overnight.

My preferred method (ex cleaner, dealt with some horrors) is half a bottle of spirit of salts from homebase etc and left for at least a few hours, preferably overnight. Do NOT use the toilet while it's soaking, that stuff is toxic.

Creepymanonagoatfarm · 04/09/2022 10:09

Cleaner here..
Bale as much water our as you can. Use a can lid if necessary.
Harpic or similar toilet fresh for limescale - squiet down and round!
Head off mop and scrape off after an hour with sides of mop end..

HappyRhino · 04/09/2022 10:14

It’s limescale, so as PP’s have suggested, heavy duty limescale remover. Might take a couple of goes. The Harpic black stuff is really good. I’d leave it on for a couple of hours.

Whatever you do though, please don’t use any bleach in the bathroom if you are using limescale remover at the same time. The two will react together. I’m a a cleaner and I’ve seen lots of other cleaners end up in hospital with breathing problems because they used bleach and limescale remover together.

knickersniff · 04/09/2022 10:21

Harpic tablets

PortalooSunset · 04/09/2022 10:22

HG toilet cleaner gel. It's the dog's doodahs. We has one that looked like yours, tried everything else but this stuff (left overnight) then a scrub round prior to flushing and it was good as new.

I’d go and buy a new toilet.Grin

Oneearringlost · 04/09/2022 10:25

Spirit of Salts!

WithIcePlease · 04/09/2022 10:25

I had one worse than that in hard water area.
Black harpic will do it. Get as much water out as possible and leave a load of black harpic in. May need to do it twice

Coffeeschmoffe · 04/09/2022 10:28

It might look really grim but it’s just limescale. Bleach won’t work - what will work is this: www.amazon.co.uk/HG-Super-Powerful-Toilet-Cleaner/dp/B004QVEHHQ/

(if you don’t believe me, just look at the before and after pictures in the Amazon reviews!)

PolkaDotShoes · 04/09/2022 10:30

Bleach will remove the staining but it won't remove the limescale (which even if throughly bleached, will always be prone to staining). I would therefore concentrate on getting the limescale off - nasty chemicals first, then rubber gloves and scrubbing. It might take several treatments. Helpful if you scoop some of the water out the loo first so the nasty chemicals don't get so diluted.
IMPORTANT: Don't mix bleach with other chemicals or you might gas yourself.

noclothesinbed · 04/09/2022 10:33

The harpic in the black bottle is what's needed leave it on overnight it will bring it up fine

sueelleker · 04/09/2022 10:33

This is excellent, but you may need to order it on-line. Robert Dyas used to sell it, but I had to get mine from amazon. www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwja26Ka6vr5AhXXiVwKHau6AiwQFnoECAYQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fhg.eu%2Fuk%2Fproducts%2Fhg-toilet-renovation-kit&usg=AOvVaw0-xEzipLW1GE8UMQGr9jTw

Seems a tad expensive

Agree with @WithIcePlease - get as much water out of the bowl with a bucket, soak up the remaining water with a paper towel to ensure the bowl is dry, and then pour your limescale remover into the bowl of the toilet.

Let sit on top of the limescale for several hours and then - if it’s really thick - you’ll have to scrape or chip it off with some sort of utensil (it should be loose by this point and will come off quite easily). Don’t use metal or you’ll scratch and damage the ceramic bowl - use wood or plastic.

WhoopsEee · 04/09/2022 10:35

Black Harpic! Mine was like this when I moved and within an hour it was all nice and clear!

Sally090807 · 04/09/2022 10:37
