Hi all,
So I have recently moved into my new house and this is how the toilet is (yuk!). I am just wanting to know what I can use to clean it? And what to do to stop this coming back?
TIA x

Plunge out the water and fill with full strength cola

Robinonaspade · 04/09/2022 10:42

Citric acid, tips on the dri-pak website:

Spirits of salt is actually hydrochloric acid. Serious care required.

sueelleker · 04/09/2022 16:47

It's £3.99 in Robert Dyas.www.robertdyas.co.uk/kilrock-spirits-of-salt-500ml

Isn't Coca Cola supposed to fix this ? I recall seeing a cleaning programme years ago where they used it and it removed all the staining!

TwowaystoUrmston · 04/09/2022 16:57

Another vote for black Harpic, both our loo's were as bad if not worse (very hard water area and house had been empty over a year) when we moved in and it shifted every trace. I will be honest and say it took two applications (full bottle down loo each time and left overnight) so a bit pricey but no scrubbing involved so worth it for me. After the first application it was coming off in big chunks/sheets when i flushed and then the second lot shifted what was left.

I tried it and it did nothing!

No need to drain the toilet or anything like that — you can do this with very little effort and without making a mess. I've had to deal with toilets like this before, and what's worked for me every time is getting a bottle of Kilrock Multipurpose Descaler and slowly pouring the liquid around the inside of the toilet, so that it trickles onto the offending area, making sure that it reaches all the dirty bits (I think I've tended to use about a third of a bottle when doing this). Then just leave it for a few hours. After that, use an old toothbrush to wipe off all the grime, and it should just slip right off into the toilet. Dispose of the toothbrush, flush the toilet, and you're done. (This has never not worked for me. But if it doesn't work, you could try Spirits of Salt, which is even stronger. If you do this, be very careful not to get any on your skin, as it can do a lot of damage. Whichever you use, make sure you wear rubber gloves in case of splashes.)

Do you think I could use the limescale stuff and harpic together? 🤔

OP posts:
Basilthymerosemary · 04/09/2022 18:41

Do not Mix together. Do one at a time.

Dontstoprunning · 06/09/2022 22:19

@Ima90sbaby how did you get on? Have you got an after pic? 😁

terriblyangryattimes · 06/09/2022 22:59

Citric acid (v cheap from amazon) and v hot water. We had 2 loos like this when we moved and both are as good as new now.

Bunnyfluffles · 06/09/2022 23:15

Hello I used white vinegar poured down the loo, left overnight and repeat if necessary. I was really surprised at how effective it was - and it's not a nasty chemical.
Good luck!

Fraaahnces · 06/09/2022 23:31

About 4l of Coca Cola left overnight was Aggie & Kim’s trick. (Have never tried it though.)

Spirit of salts

Mosso · 06/09/2022 23:52

Black harpic. Will be gone in 30 mins.

MoistBandana · 06/09/2022 23:57

That's hard water.

There's tablets you can buy to drop in and leave over night.
They work well, but you have then keep on top of it or it'll stain again.

MoistBandana · 07/09/2022 00:01

Harpic power plus tablets.

They worked.on my toilet that looked.just like ops.

I was going to say these tablets. I used to do housekeeping and I'd recommend these in every house!

Ima90sbaby · 07/09/2022 13:39

@Dontstoprunning
ok so this is a picture of the toilet after I had:

  • plunged the water round the u bend to lower water level
  • putting some liquid descale down there and left for about an hour
  • flushed then plunged the water again
  • pouring a whole bottle of black harpic round the toilet
And no scrubbing was needed. So abit more black harpic will do it I should think.

Wow well done! That's come up really nicely.
Just regularly put harpic and leave overnight now and and that should prevent it happening again

Ima90sbaby · 07/09/2022 16:25

Forgot to say that I had left the black harpic down there for around 6 hours!
Will deffo be leaving harpic down there on the nighttime from now.
Thank you everyone

I use a bleach based Harpic cleaner, white bottle. It removes lime scale too.
