What do you disinfect?

Do you disinfect your kitchen surfaces, (or elsewhere) whether with bleach spray or an antibacterial spray of some kind each time after you've cleaned it?

I just use a regular kitchen cleaner spray, cloth and warm water but apparently after you've done that, you're then supposed to disinfect them.

And you're supposed to clean and then also disinfect chopping boards and utensils too. I guess with pans/dishes the heat disinfects in the oven or on the hob.

Do people do this?

Who says you're supposed to do all this?

ouch321 · 03/07/2022 02:43

Various websites inc the Food Standards Agency.

Went down a bit of a rabbit hole this evening.

I use dettol spray to clean surfaces. Chopping boards and pretty much everything else goes in the dishwasher. I don't use disinfectant for anything. Bleach gets put down the loos occasionally.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 03/07/2022 04:14

Yeah I clean my kitchen work tops then spray with disinfectant as a " final " finish
I then set all cloths and sponges soaking in the kitchen bowl in water and disinfectant or bleach for the night ( or run them through the dishwasher if it's going on that night )

bluejelly · 03/07/2022 04:21

I never disinfect anything. Hot water and WU liquid if have been chopping meat. Regular anti bac spray for other surfaces. We are all healthy!

AlwaysLatte · 03/07/2022 04:25

Anything I use with meat (chopping board as well) go straight in the dishwasher after use. In fact everything goes straight into the DW, then I use hot water and Method spray to wipe down the surfaces after every use. I only use actual disinfectant on the floor.

Ragwort · 03/07/2022 04:39

No - just a wipe down with hot water & a bit of washing up liquid.

MoreMulligansPlease · 03/07/2022 04:46

Nothing here. Bit of bleach in watering the sink for things like meat/chicken chopping boards. I wipe the kitchen surfaces down with whatever spray I’ve got to hand.

A few germs are essential in the world.

Downunderduchess · 03/07/2022 05:14

I have a basic kitchen cleaning spray that I do the benches/stove top/sink surround with. That’s it. I hand wash my dishes with regular dishwashing liquid. The end. I don’t go overboard with chemicals etc. I don’t ever buy bleach or those type of toxic cleaners. I’m clean, my dishes are clean. I’m vegetarian so don’t have meat products in house to worry about cross contamination.

onlythreenow · 03/07/2022 05:14

I don't disinfect anything either. A bit of anti-bac spray now and again, otherwise just water and washing up liquid. I've managed to reach my 60s with very good health, I hardly ever get ill. I agree with pp, a few germs are essential.

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 03/07/2022 05:37

The Food Standards Agency website has a section on domestic cleaning, and it does not say you need to do that.

If you have been looking at the rules for professional kitchens, yes their requirements are understandably different, but you aren't expected to do these at home.

Oblomov22 · 03/07/2022 05:41

I never disinfect anything. Sounds like anxiety to me.

DockOTheBay · 03/07/2022 05:51

I don't disinfect anything in the kitchen

Snozzlemaid · 03/07/2022 06:08

Nope, never disinfect anything here either.
Just hot water and washing up liquid to wipe down kitchen surfaces.

GrumpyPanda · 03/07/2022 06:13

Really really bad idea to use antibacterial spray/disinfectant on everyday surfaces. It's practices like these resulting in multi resistant superbugs. Plus you'll kill off all the good germs. Soap, water, and you're good.

DisgruntledPelican · 03/07/2022 06:18

I use dettol spray for surfaces and utensils that have had raw meat/fish or the packaging near themHot soapy water for everything else though. Soak cloths, sponges and brushes in weak bleach solution every couple of days if they’ve not been in the washing machine. The kitchen floor is steam-cleaned regularly.

Caspianberg · 03/07/2022 06:19

Nope. No disinfectant

i use Method kitchen spray ( orange degreaser one) to generally clean everywhere in the kitchen. Using hot water and dish soap as well for a wipe down first if messy

wooden chopping board get washed with hot water and dish soap. Plastic which I use for meat go in the dishwasher

use reusable cleaning cloths for everything that just go in the washing machine on hot when enough to wash. No kitchen roll

Morverna · 03/07/2022 06:20

I use anti bac spray on the loo and bathroom floor. The only thing I disinfect in the kitchen is the worksurface (rarely) if I have had raw meat on it. Kitchen utensils which have been used with raw meat go in the dishwasher. I just use a non anti bac spray usually.
Towels I do wash on a 90⁰C wash every so often.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 03/07/2022 06:37

Never bought any disinfectant let alone used it. Good old soap and water here.

Inthesameboatatmo · 03/07/2022 06:41

I just use diluted washing up liquid in a spray bottle for everything including floors. And wash all the cloths in with the towels 60°. I can't be doing with all the faff of different cleaners for everything who's got time for that.

BertieBotts · 03/07/2022 06:43

I don't disinfect anything, I use the dishwasher to clean chopping boards, even the wooden ones, I just replace them when they crack. I use a vinegar type or flash/similar brand multipurpose cleaner to wipe down kitchen and bathroom surfaces. I suppose I do disinfect the loo as use toilet duck type cleaner as the shape of the bottle is convenient.

I only disinfect things when someone has a sickness bug. I don't like it when DH buys the cleaning spray with bleach in it because it invariably gets on our clothes and bleaches them.

BertieBotts · 03/07/2022 06:50

Maybe the FSA is talking about commercial kitchens? It seems a bit much for a home setting.

Perfectlystill · 03/07/2022 06:52

I don't disinfect anything

scrivette · 03/07/2022 06:52

I use washing up liquid and hot water for everything except toilet cleaner down the toilet.

Cervinia · 03/07/2022 06:54

The cat litter trays and I put it in the mop bucket too for the hard floors downstairs.
