What do you disinfect?

Do you disinfect your kitchen surfaces, (or elsewhere) whether with bleach spray or an antibacterial spray of some kind each time after you've cleaned it?

I just use a regular kitchen cleaner spray, cloth and warm water but apparently after you've done that, you're then supposed to disinfect them.

And you're supposed to clean and then also disinfect chopping boards and utensils too. I guess with pans/dishes the heat disinfects in the oven or on the hob.

Do people do this?

I disinfect nothing!

yikesanotherbooboo · 03/07/2022 07:12

Hot water and washing up liquid , dishwasher and occasional multi purpose spray for surfaces or window ledge.

mrsfoof · 03/07/2022 07:20

I only disinfect:

The loo (with bleach, twice a week).

Kitchen surfaces ONLY if e.g I've spilled raw chicken juice on them when opening the packet.

Bathroom surfaces (door handle / flush) ONLY if someone is ill with sickness bug.

Floor if cat is sick on it / has killed a rodent on it

Otherwise, soap and hot water is more than adequate.

glamourousindierockandroll · 03/07/2022 07:35

I also never use bleach in the kitchen.

I use Flash or Method kitchen spray usually, Pink Stuff on the sink and hob. If I'm giving it a really hood clean, I use Cif cream cleaner to give everything a really good scrub.

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 03/07/2022 07:38

For disinfectant to work you need to spray all over the surface and leave for 15 mins. I put bleach down the toilet so technically I disinfect that.

User74936782 · 03/07/2022 09:44

I don't generally use bleach or disinfectant in the kitchen apart from occasionally to remove tea stains or to put down the sink plug hole to stop the sink smelling. I spray bleach or mould remover in the space where the washing machine soap drawer goes occasionally, usually before we go on holiday so it has time to work.

JiminyGlick · 03/07/2022 09:47

I fill the sink with bleachy water about once a week and I use that solution to wipe over the worktops.

JudgeRindersMinder · 03/07/2022 09:49

Meh the FSA is all about “don’t do as I do, do as I say”. I worked in Environmental Health and Food Safety for 10 years and beyond using a dishwasher, I domt use any antibacterial type products, never have and never will. They give a false sense of security. Just clean things properly with a clean cloth, hot water and washing up liquid.

mateysmum · 03/07/2022 09:53

Normally I only bleach sinks when they need it and toilets. At the moment DH has covid and I don't so he is isolating and I am going through Dettol spray like there is no tomorrow!
Chopping boards go in the dishwasher and I will use antibacterial on worktops if they have got meat or other gunk on them but normally just wipe down with a cloth. cloths get changed at least once a day and washed on a hot wash.

Chemenger · 03/07/2022 09:58

I also have made it to 60 without disinfecting anything. I hate the smell of bleach. Things that have had raw meat on them go in the dishwasher, surfaces are wiped with hot water and Method spray. I don’t buy anything antibacterial. We’re very, very seldom ill.

AdoraBell · 03/07/2022 10:00

We have elderly dogs so random parts of carpets need spot cleaning with disinfectant. Apart from that I only use it for the bathroom, but not always, and the kitchen floor, again not always. I’m very careful when handling raw meat so hardly ever get spills from that but when needed I use disinfectant to clean work surfaces/floor.

I don’t use it on chopping boards, I wash those with hot water and a scourer/brush.

withiceplease · 03/07/2022 10:05

I don't disinfect anything in the kitchen
I use toilet cleaner with bleach in though
And I sometimes swirl zoflora around a smelly kitchen bin

I use dettol spray to clean surfaces. Chopping boards and pretty much everything else goes in the dishwasher. I don't use disinfectant for anything. Bleach gets put down the loos occasionally.

I do exactly the same as you in the kitchen. Although I put bleach down the loo each night at bedtime. I only do the toilets that often because we don't flush during the night.

eurochick · 03/07/2022 10:58

We have off mains drainage so have to be careful with the amount of bleach going into the tank. Which is not a bad thing for the environment.

StarWarsisthebest · 03/07/2022 11:22

I don’t disinfect anything. I buy a 5 litre bottle of multi surface cleaner and dilute it in a spray bottle for most cleaning jobs. My SIL had her home kitchen inspected as she was making cakes comercially and she told me that some of
disinfectant sprays have to sit on the surface for a certain length of time before they are wiped off otherwise they are useless.

cottagegardenflower · 03/07/2022 11:23

I use a bleach solution on all kitchen surfaces. Utensils, cutting boards etc go in the dishwasher. I also use a bleach solution in the bathroom.

Ifailed · 03/07/2022 11:28

To all those people saying they don't use disinfectants yet use 'anti-bac' sprays, bleach and soap - these are all disinfectants?

AntlerRose · 03/07/2022 11:29

The loo, flush, bathroom taps, bathroom door handles and kitchen tap handles - frequently. Most multipupose sprays disinfect dont they. Cat litter tray gets hosed off and sprayed sometimes.

The chopping boards get dishwashed. The worktops, baths and sinks etc are just soapy water.

PinkButtercups · 03/07/2022 11:36

All the kitchen when I clean it, cupboards, handles, doors, door handles.

I disinfect the toilet because not sure why people wouldn't. I also disinfect the bathroom.

Beddings etc go on a hot wash.

Most of my surfaces are disinfected, just the way I clean.

PinkButtercups · 03/07/2022 11:38

Dettol is a disinfectant

gingersplodgecat · 03/07/2022 11:40

I use bleach on toilets, sinks, plug holes, the kitchen food waste bin and chopping boards.

Nothing else gets that treatment, apart from my mugs and teaspoons which get an occasional dunking in bleachy water when the tea stains get too much to shift any other way.

fabicelolly · 03/07/2022 11:41

Just a Method anti-bac spray with a cloth daily/after use on kitchen work surfaces, and anti-bac wipes for messy spills but that’s all.

I use bleach in the toilet, but even the shower/bath I just wipe down with a cloth and water after each use and then use a bathroom spray like Viakal every few weeks only because I’m in a hard water area.

I just don’t see the need for using much product - I don’t like the thought of the environmental impact of rinsing chemicals down the drains. We’ve always been healthy and don’t catch much colds/anything.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 03/07/2022 12:02

I use Method spray to clean my kitchen surfaces. I have a bottle of disinfectant sitting in the cupboard under the sink, which I probably bought because I thought I should have some just in case I needed it. Can't remember the last time I used it - possibly chucked a bit down the kitchen sink sometime last year? I've never bought actual bleach in my life, I wouldn't know how to use it or whay for (other than putting it down the toilet) and be worried about accidentally creating chlorine. I use ecocer toilet cleaner.

I am pretty healthy and rarely ill - have had 2 days off work sick in the last 14 years.

Fairislefandango · 03/07/2022 12:12

I don't disinfect anything. In the kitchen I just use normal (not anti-bac) Method kitchen spray - although, reading this thread, I'm wondering if I should ditch that and just use washing up liquid!

Luredbyapomegranate · 03/07/2022 12:12

I think food agency standards are designed for commercial kitchens where disease can quickly spread between multiple people.

You don’t need to apply the same standards at home.

Overdoing it on disinfectant isn’t good for your immune system. Also not good for the planet.
