Where do you guys keep your passport

Mine's in my handbag, all the time. I live in France, and even with a titre de séjour, thé police have the right to demand it in a roadside control.

I live in France too and did not know this!
What would happen if I didn't have it on me? I always carry my Carte de Sejour though
