Towel storage with no airing cupboard?

Ruralbliss · 06/05/2022 16:00

We've moved from a huge house with infinite built in cupboards including two airing cupboards full of towels to a small new build with a combi boiler so no airing cupboard (or indeed any cupboards! Having some bedroom wardrobes built soon)

Where do people keep their spare sets?

I know I have to get rid of loads of stuff but the towels are bothering me - I'm thinking a set per person in the bathroom they use then an additional set for when those get washed.

Do you keep yours in the bathroom on a heated radiator or in a unit/chest of drawers (so bulky though)? And what about guest towels.

Ditto for bedding and seasonal clothes! I'm drowning in boxes of stuff and no clue as to where it should all go. I can't be the only one.

I downsized from a 5 bed house to a 2 bed flat. No airing cupboard. Luckily the second bedroom has wall to wall fitted wardrobes and the room is huge. They are really ugly but I can't rip them out because they are full of all the stuff that would ideally go in a loft and all the towels bedlinen. I did throw loads out.

Billandben444 · 06/05/2022 16:05

We're in a flat and I changed the bed bases for those with deep drawers for towels and bedding. Make sure they're bone dry before you store them.

Dairyqueenie · 06/05/2022 16:16

We have this problem and are a family of 5 with considerable towel use. We have a large Ali baba basket outside the shower room for some towels and a luggage style towel rack above the bath the bathroom for the rest but it’s not ideal. I have toyed with the idea of fixing an IKEA type cupboard with shelves onto one of the walls of the shower room to accommodate them in a more organised way (there is a limited floor footprint available) so interested to see what people suggest.

PermanentlyTired03 · 06/05/2022 16:25

I bought a slim tall cabinet from ikea. Has lots of shelves for towels and toilet paper. www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/enhet-high-cb-w-4-shelves-white-10440452/ I think it's that one- bought a door and 4 legs aswell

HelloSpringIveMissedYou · 06/05/2022 16:33

All bedding and towels are kept under the beds, all our beds either have drawers or are ottoman ones. I say all we only have 3 beds Grin

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 06/05/2022 16:36

I don't have spare sets of towels. I have a double towel rail in the bathroom which holds (when folded correctly), the 5x bath sheets and 2 general sized towels that we own. The one for hand drying hangs next to the sink and rotates as it's washed with a second one (one in the wash at all times).

We dry used towels over the back of a chair, hooks in the bedroom until dry then refold and return to the rail. They are then washed twice a week.

ModerationInEverything · 06/05/2022 16:37

I got an ottoman bed. An insane amount of towels, bedding and Christmas presents live in it.

EmbroidedFlowers · 06/05/2022 16:37

Could you get ottomans?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 06/05/2022 16:37

We don't have overnight guests but if we did we would just give them (cleaned) bath sheets from the ones in the bathroom and use the rest between us.

Spare linen is kept in each of the bedrooms it's for (under the bed).

Lulu1919 · 06/05/2022 16:42

Put aside a single wardrobe with shelving aside for the towels etc when you have them built ?

Winterjoy · 06/05/2022 16:44

No ottoman beds here so we use a couple of these boxes under the bed - one for clean towels and one for spare bedding. Everything folded Marie Kondo style so it stands in rows for ease of access

I've downsized my towel store because of this. We do have a landing cupboard where I can put spare bath sheets, but that's just four. Four on towel radiator in bathroom. Four in cupboard.

Hand towels get changed every day and are in a drawer under the sink. We only use bath sheets and hand towels that are half twice the size of a face flannel. Old hand towels were given away and replaced with mini towels that are easier to store, wash and dry. All towels are white so they can go in a load together. At the bottom of my wardrobe, I have a couple of old hand towels for when I dye my hair or bath the dog.

Ottoman beds and wardrobes

Ruralbliss · 07/05/2022 07:35

Thank goodness for Mumsnet and the range of quality insights on an important but slightly dull topic!
Thanks so much all.

New double beds and low plastic storage boxes were purchased for teens so they can have their second bath sheet in those with bedding and another for winter coats/shoes.

You've inspired me to get some shelving built in wardrobes rather than all hanging space/drawers.

In our old life if a teen decided they no longer wanted pink towels but black the old perfectly good pink ones would stay in cupboards but now it's going to be a one-in-one-out rule for most things we buy I think for all categories.

You've helped me realise I don't host overnight guests often enough for them to have their own towels they can just use a clean spare on the rate occasions they stay. We've relocated nearer to family now so less visitors than before.

Have a Saturday of Maria Kondoing/Swedish Death cleaning and many charity shop runs ahead. 💪

I love this sort of thread! I find them soothing!
Our answer was just to cut down on number of towels. Towels go in the wash with other things so there is never a point when all the towels are in the laundry.
I wouldn't keep spare towels in the bathroom for fear of them getting damp
We have heated towel rail (when the heating is on only) and useful hooks on backs of bedroom doors for towels that have been used but are not ready to be washed yet.

OhamIreally · 07/05/2022 08:42

Yes shelving in the wardrobe OP then roll the towels rather than fold and slot them into the shelf. I have quite a lot of towels and this is how I store mine. Bedding goes in drawers under the bed.

I use hotel style towel racks to store stacks of towels. I site them above heated towel rails or above the door.

Loving the suggestions of rolled dry towels in a hotel style holder on the wall!

Totally genius.

Vet practices & animal shelters get through a LOT of towels so if you have any older ones that might not be saleable at a charity shop they'd be very grateful for them

Leftbutcameback · 07/05/2022 17:33

We have a basket at the top of our built in wardrobes for clean towels. Struggle a bit with hanging up damp ones but we have a free standing antique towel stand which is great!

We did have two big baskets of towels but I got rid of loads as we just didn't need them

SoManyTshirts · 07/05/2022 17:35

I have a small table outside the bathroom (corner of landing) with my few spare towels and clean flannels for guests to help themselves.

Greatoutdoors · 07/05/2022 17:35

I have a chest of drawers in the spare room where I keep them, but it’s full to bursting. You’ve inspired me to have a good clear out!

NeededAction · 07/05/2022 17:37

I keep my spare towels rolled up and then stacked at the bottom of my wardrobe, under the hanging clothes that aren’t as long as the others! The loft has no proper access so changing winter / summer stuff a couple of times a year isn’t too bad, but I wouldn’t want to haul myself in there every time I needed a clean towel!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 07/05/2022 17:39

We have a tall and deep but narrow bookcase on the back landing for spare towels and a storage ottoman in our unusually large bedroom for all the spare sets of bedding

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 07/05/2022 18:16

It amazes me how much stuff some people have. My parents live just the two of them in their house, yet have no fewer than 20 towels, if not more, on shelves in their bathroom. It's insane. They also have at least 20 sets of bed linen. They only have two beds in the house.

Madness.
