Flip, flap, the Fledglings are back! April 2022 Flylady thread, all welcome!

Hello everyone, and welcome to the April Flylady thread!
We welcome newbies and returnees - if you are curious about the system feel free to ask questions or lurk! We do follow it, erm, loosely to say the least. So there is a lot of chat about random life stuff as well as housework, decluttering and organising.

A key element of flylady is not being a perfectionist!
I don’t think the regulars would mind me saying that most of us here are not naturals at housekeeping etc, so please don’t feel we are some intimidating group who demand perfectly shined sinks. We are human. We fall off the wagon. We commiserate and help each other climb back on, and we stock the virtual naughty corner with snacks and blankets for the days when adulting is just too hard.

So, the system:
🔹Some baby steps which are designed to help you build up a routine.
🔹Daily missions to help with sprucing up particular areas in the zones, for example the first zone of the month is the entry/porch and dining room if you have one.
🔹Try and do 15 minutes decluttering a day. It didn’t get cluttered in a week so it will take a lot longer to clear it!
🔹Daily focuses to help shape the week.
🔹Here on the thread many of us post to do lists, but also “ta da” lists of things we’ve achieved that day.
🔹We also recommend the Power of Three technique - if you’re overwhelmed with too much to do, just pick three things and don’t think about the rest.

Anyway, I will post some links each day (hopefully) but whether you follow the system or not - many of us just take the bits we like or build our own flylady style system to suit our own lives - do join in if you want a place to chat about keeping a house and family running!

Finally, thank you hugely to the lovely willow for steering us beautifully through March! 💐

What IS going on with this new website? Posts are posting then disappearing!

WildBlueAndDitzy · 23/04/2022 23:37

MC you didn't over react, all the others were idiots, especially the teenager's mum.

Sing we all have days like that. You got quite a lot done in the end. Hope you get students discount card 🤞

That's a shame you missed the concert Bean. If you need a break from the coughing try something with codeine in, it's a cough suppressant as well as a painkiller. Hope you recover soon.

I'm not getting too much trouble from the new site. Now and again the writing goes a bit jumbled on top of each other half way through somebody's post, but apart from that it's fine. Hopefully Mumsnet will fix any glitches soon. People are complaining about it on lots of threads.

Ta-da's:

💗 Drove to the big river to hear the birds singing. Was windy but sunny. Lots of dog walkers.
💗 Supermarket shopping. Spent far too much money on a unicorn notebook.

Dancingtomusic · 24/04/2022 01:29

Wild- your unicorn notebook sounds nice

Mc- you defimately didnt over react - mctoddlers safety is more important than silly teenagers playing tennis with a toy phone. That woman is an idiot she shouldnt have said anything to you than sorry.

Waves to everyone.

Tmi warning....

We have been at a themepark for 2 days - stayed over 1 night. Kids liked it.
(I thought is was a waste of bloody money - dhtwatty paid.)
I did not sleep at hotel as both fraggles wanted to be near mummy so I ended up pacing the room then finally lying down on a tiny edge of mattress - mainly to ensure dd (aged5) didnt fall off the high bed and smash her head on the bedside caninet. I think i had 2 hours sleep. Plastered on a cheerful smile and day 2 at themepark.
Got home 2 hours later dd projectile vommited in her sleep.
Here started the 48hour bug. I took the offending items and had to hose and wash things out in a corner of the garden before putting into the washing machine.

Add the holiday laundry. Ds had tummy ache all afternoon.
Now ds vommited on the stairs. He came downstairs to tell me he was going to be sick. Dhtwatty and I had a barney. I am not speaking to him.
I have stayed awake to watch over ds and to fold and put away lots of freshly washed clothes. Incase ds needs fresh pjs.)

Ds has sharp pains in his tummy, so I sitting next to him and keep shoving a bowl under his chin anytime he whinges.

Going brew some peppermint tea.

Sorry for tmi.

Mc3209 · 24/04/2022 07:47

Oh Dancing, the vomiting bug. They are nasty and spread so easily! I hope little fraggles get better soon, and won't pass that onto you. Sending strong coffee ☕

Thank you for your support Bean, Dancing, and Blue!

Blue new MN is working fine for me. I am using it from browser on my phone (android) and no issues that I've noticed so far.

To do for today:

  • conquer laundry. Otherwise it will conquer me.
SingToTheSky · 24/04/2022 09:17

Morning all. Last day of the holidays here and boy am I feeling it 😬😩

YesTaDa
🌷yesterday’s LOL in dryer
🌷huge amount of diary sorting and writing on planner
🌷booked next load of tesco slots
🌷sorted meds for another week so it syncs up better with when I order them
🌷sent some emails/messages I’d been procrastinating about
🌷printed stuff for school meeting
🌷ordered some stuff for Cagletini
🌷ordered hay for Cagbunny
🌷printed more activities for Cagletini, although she insisted on doing most of them immediately
🌷put Cagletini to bed

So I did get some stuff done, but not nearly as much as I’d hoped.

Today my priorities are cooking a huge vat of bolognese for the freezer, putting aaaall the clean laundry away, and finishing the week I’m currently on with OU stuff (which is still behind where I should be!).

It is Sunday, so renew your spirit!

We are moving into Zone 5 - the living room. It’s fairly unusual for us to have an entire week in there as it’s the last zone of the month - IIRC Flylady’s reason for this is that as the main “public” room, the living room is often prioritised for general tidying anyway.

I have finally found my way back to this thread! For some reason the update hid the whole housekeeping topic in my settings and I couldn't understand why I couldn't get here or why I'd get error codes when I searched fledglings, found the thread and tried to open it.

Luckily I found a thread on site stuff where someone had experienced similar and was advised how to fix it. If you're missing anything it's well worth going to your settings and seeing what is on your hidden list - mine was about half the site Confused

House is not too bad, got home sick and having to go straight back to work after no sleep for weird journey reasons with overnight in an empty airport, but pet sitter had been quite tidy and the work I managed to do before I left made an impact.

Mostly been getting through unpacking, laundry, keeping kitchen and bathroom tidy and trying to be disciplined about keeping things tidy on the home front since returning on Tuesday and working on enlisting ds to do better too and preparing proper meals.

I think other than usual routines and work prep and cooking etc today I will aim to clean out the vacuum cleaner which nephew seems to have used but not known how to empty as it is chocker block, and have a vacuum round downstairs. My tree has shed all of it's blossom which then turns into weird raisin like bits that stick to shoes, the cat, anything and end up all over my house every damn year. It's like getting chewing gum out of the cats paws and trousers. Luckily downstairs is hard floors and most of it ends up there.

Hope everyone is well? I've been poorly and exhausted but feeling loads better now and hoping to be fighting fit soon. I've done my planning for a couple of days at work plus some admin stuff this morning already and a lol and taking rubbish and recycling out. Having a bit of a chill now before getting on.

swallowedAfly · 25/04/2022 08:00

Did I break the thread?

GreenWillowAndCatkins · 25/04/2022 08:05

Yay, Fly good to see you! Hope your trip refreshed you, even if it gave you a lurgy. Sounds like you're very much on top of things.

Mc you did not overreact. All you did was ask them not to play tennis near toddlers, and their Mum's point is totally moot: of course they would never deliberately hurt a child; it was an accident you were worried about. We have all been there - many years ago I exchanged cross words with a Mum on her phone whose 2 yr old was throwing sand in people's faces and slamming a playhouse door on people's fingers, while she gassed to her friends. I asked him nicely to stop and she yelled at me, instead of supervising him. In both cases, it was embarrassment speaking I think.

SingToTheSky · 25/04/2022 08:15

Morning all!

Great to see you fly sorry you are unwell though. Well done for getting the house in order before leaving for your trip - I hate that feeling of getting home, exhausted, to a house in a complete state from leaving in a hurry!

YesTaDa
🧅made a huge batch of bolognese sauce in the slow cooker (with Cagletini helping)
🧅uni work
🧅helped DS make a table and map for his chemistry homework which he then took to town with DH (geology stuff)
🧅printed and laminated activities for Cagletini
🧅wrote out a load of questions to ask at school meeting
🧅did veg, pasta and salad and served up bolognese for dinner
🧅put most laundry away
🧅helped Cagletini scrub the paint covered tuff tray
🧅Cagbunny care

Not a long list but the tasks I did took a fair while. Rough night with Cagletini (nightmares I think) and the house is freezing 🥶

❗️Talk to DH about the day ahead before he leaves for nursery run

Since the thread is now more difficult to keep up with and post on, I just wanted to say that chatting on messaging apps is an option too if anyone would like that. Some of us fledglings have had a messenger group since lockdown, and more are always welcome! Obviously totally fine if not, and the flylady thread will always be a thing! 💕 But if you’d like to be in a WhatsApp or FB messenger chat do PM me.

I cannot get on with new format.keeps eating posts, redirecting to adverts and other glitching.
Means I will be posting bit less, but am on the chatting messenger thread if anyone wants a catch up there!
I do miss this nice spot on MN ,and all of you very much.will try post daily/every couple days.but depends if my phone can

swallowedAfly · 25/04/2022 09:42

Aah I see. Had similar happen with another regular thread where we decamped to a different platform because of problems on mn. Yes I'd be interested in an invite if that's ok and someone can pm me.

Work today so this morning has mostly been getting ds up and out with a packed lunch, usual dealings with pets and doing some last minute work prep. I did not vacuum downstairs yesterday. I just made progress with laundry backlog and made a proper meal (this is my new 'habit' I want to install in myself as I've been very slack with it for quite a while) and tidied the kitchen.

I would love to say I'll vacuum downstairs after work but I'm not convinced. My main things other than work and home basics today are another lol, mark a set of essays and cook a proper meal and try not to snack on loads of crap after. Day off tomorrow so may be more ambitious then.

EasterDecorations · 25/04/2022 10:06

Morning all,
Back to school and term time routines for us today. DCs are heading into GCSEs and A levels now so there is a bit of tension in the air and we will need to try and ensure stress levels don't get out of hand.

House is fairly OK, DH did some cleaning over the weekend and I cleared the laundry backlog, but it is untidy in places. We have been having a blitz on the garden having got rid of the old swing and basketball hoop. As part of that we have ordered a new patio set as our old one is falling to pieces (20 years old) so DH pressure washed the patio yesterday and my next job is to clear out our bench box storage unit to keep cushions in in wet weather, it is currently full of broken tennis rackets, deflated footballs etc. So I have booked a tip slot for my day off later in the week.

StillUp · 25/04/2022 10:26

That sounds perfectly reasonable Fly

I don’t think you overreacted Mc.

MN is actually working fine for me from my iPhone, haven’t tried on anything else though. I didn’t manage to post over the weekend as it was basically chaos Grin. The wedding was lovely and I wasn’t too hungover thankfully, as I was solo parenting while DH had a charity hike thing and then had a birthday party for DD1. So from today I am reclaiming the house, getting back into my routines, doing some exercise, stopping eating crap, and generally sorting my life out.

DD1 has been successfully deposited at school and I’m half way through a deep clean and declutter of the living room which was left a bomb site last night while I was in the bath. I’ve moved anything that doesn’t belong in there, cleaned under the sofas and sofa cushions, dusted the two side tables, and made a start decrumbing and deglittering the rug (DD1 was crafting on it 🙄). Stopped for baby cuddles but the rest of my aims for today are:

  1. dust and tidy the rest of the living room, mop the floor
  2. hang washing out (that’s about the only thing I’ve kept on top of)
  3. put away all the birthday presents
  4. restore order to all 3 bedrooms and the dining room
  5. home bleurgh

Possibly optimistic but here goes…

WildBlueAndDitzy · 25/04/2022 10:56

Spoke too soon! Just typed out a post and lost it. Think it was because someone posted onghe thread while I was typing, not sure. I'll try again.

Sorry your DC have been ill Dancing Fingers crossed the projectile vomiting stops soon! And I hope you don't catch it.

Mc I'm the same as you, browser on Android phone and no problems except the odd post where the writing is jumbled and unreadable. Hopefully Mumsnet sort it out soon for everyone.

Thanks for the offer of another app Sing Unfortunately I don't use those so I'll just stick with the thread for as long as it keeps running. I'll always be grateful to all the Fledglings for introducing me to FlyLady system.

Willow parents like that are the pits aren't they. I don't know why they only seem to have two settings when it comes to their DC - ignoring everything or shouting at them/others. As you say, they manage to speak to their friends just fine.

You didn't break the thread Fly 😁 Thanks for the tips on hidden threads, I didn't even know that was a thing. I hear you with the laundry backlogs, sometimes I feel like all I have to do is blink and another load appears in the basket.

Up you've got your work cut out today. lol at deglittering the carpet. Glad you enjoyed the wedding.

ED lovely to overhaul the garden in time for summer. I'm going to be doing some planting today too.

To-do:

🕊️ Home blessings
🕊️ Gardening
🕊️ Extra LOL
🕊️ Sort flat packed furniture

Ta-da's:

🌈 Sorted through an over stuffed drawer and pulled out a pile of clothes that don't match with anything else
🌈 Breakfast

EasterDecorations · 25/04/2022 11:17

I have been posting OK on other threads but this one played me up this morning (see double post above). When I hit post it just went into a spin and a black box covered the screen, but I then pressed preview and post and it was fine but ended up posted twice.

Otherwise I'm not having any issues with the site other than one that they have said they are sorting out (unable to go directly to hidden topics. I have AIBU hidden as it takes over Active from everything else and can be a bit full-on, but I like a little nose in there sometimes).

MissMarplesNiece · 25/04/2022 11:48

Hi, can I join in? I used to follow flylady but fell off the waggon during a long & serious illness and never found the energy to climb back on. It's time I did - my flat has never been so untidy/dusty/cluttered. A thread like this maybe just what I need to get myself back on track.

GreenWillowAndCatkins · 25/04/2022 12:57

Hello @MissMarplesNiece , welcome, do join us! You will notice we do a fair amount of chatting about anything other than housework...

Dancing so sorry about the vomiting bug, they are my absolute least favourite illness for DC. Hope everyone is settling now and the stair carpet could be rescued.

Wild we will keep chatting here as long as we can! Good luck with flat pack furniture and hurrah for taking out clothes that don't match.

Fly you've not broken anything, MN have broken stuff!

StillUp good luck with glitter <bane of my life>. That might be a bit on an ethusiastic list with a baby to cuddle, but give it a go.

ED sending all good wishes and Brew / Gin for exam stress. We are entering A level mocks here and stress is similarly high. Zoo I think you will need the same? And Chic, if you're about. Good luck clearing out the Garden Toy Box Of Doom.

🍒👋 to Red, Bean, Mc, That, Sing, foxes, Hills and all others that have fallen out of my head.

Back to school for DS3 this morning and DD tomorrow.

Hi miss welcome!

Right, meeting done, was just an in house one so fairly relaxed which was lucky as the painkillers took their sweet time this morning Hmm

po3.3

ED I need to investigate this hidden thing. I got a bit fed up with Mumsnet lately, seems so many troll posts, people asking who is unreasonable but mainly just wanting a row and lots of people in abusive relationships, who I feel sorry for but it's depressing when that's all there is to read. I don't think I know how to use Mumsnet properly. Probably a good thing or I'd spend too much time here.

Hi MissMarple this thread has helped me loads. I've only been here a few months.

Willow I confess the clothes haven't left the house. They've still got tags on. They're the last remnants of my oooh-that's-nice buying policy which resulted in a chaotic wardrobe where nothing goes. I've ordered some matching things so that's my summer shopping sorted. In future I will be more organised about any new purchases

Sing this is the first day salad has seemed appealing. Summer's coming!

Ta-da's:

🌈 Home blessings done
🌈 Morning routine completed
🌈 Bills paid
🌈 Order placed

Dancingtomusic · 25/04/2022 16:44

Wild- i feel similar with mn. There used to be some super funny/interesting posts.
