@londonmummy1966

Good on you volunteering at the vaccination centre 👏🏻 🙂

I’ve hit a bit of a wall here today, tired after a busy weekend and the toss app suggested first dvds (I have none, my partner does but they’re not mine to deal with), then cables which are already sorted into three locations (cables we use, replacement/spare cables for things we use eg the hdmi cable for something currently connected by scart, and cables we don’t use but may need one day 🙄). Again, these are not mine to organise. Final suggestion was jackets but these are already sorted.

There’s a bit of the kitchen that’s bugging me as it’s a bit full and messy but I’m waiting for a sideboard to be delivered which should solve that so no point trying to tackle it now. I suppose I should do some cleaning instead which is way less fun than organising!

@Rummikub Would this sort of thing work? (Hope image attaches!)

Organising our homes, 1 day at a time!

Well Ive never seen one that big before!

That could just fit in a kitchen deep drawer I’m thinking.

I worked out that I could get 5 magazine files in the ottoman
And that gives me a filing system for about £10.
Though I am tempted by the expanding file as I’d get more categories.

Hi everyone, just doing my daily check in so we can all be accountabilibuddies! Today was a good (but tough) day. My new dog treat storage tin arrived for my study - it already had a home allocated and waiting so I just labelled it and popped it in. I also found (and labelled) a new folder for the cards I want to keep and organised them, I finished reading Dilly Carter's book for inspiration and I tackled the paperwork! 1 large storage box of our paperwork organised (and decluttered) as well as a suitcase of my DGM's paperwork (now sadly passed away and it all ended up with me). All into my lovely filing drawer. I also went through my certificates folder (where everything was together but in absolutely no order), categorised everything (labelling each compartment) and organised that too into things like 'professional qualifications' 'undergraduate and masters degrees' 'GCSEs and A-levels' etc! Good jobs done.

Dinosauraddict · 18/01/2022 20:16

Daily check in from me - mega organisation day here (despite a day full of meetings). My new storage boxes arrived and now they're all full. I have organised, put in boxes and labelled all DS' bedding, nappies, winter accessories, summer accessories, and spare parts for things like high chair and pushchair. I've organised, boxes and labelled 4 types of DH's video games which were in a random TV unit drawer, and done the same for my hat and gloves which now have their own box. I've also organised and created a nice little labelled box for DS' bibs which usually just sit in a messy pile on top the piano, so very pleased with that. I've also labelled my shoe rack and other items such as treat jar and toddler shoe gauge box. Good progress and I can see my efforts (particularly 2 drawers in DS' room and the top of the piano)!

Bit of an odd one from me today but it is organisational I think - I re-hung the curtains in my office. They were on the lowest hook of the 3" tape & were hanging slightly over the radiator, which meant that when I put things like socks on there to dry (as I do, because I find even the low setting on my tumble dryer shrinks them) they were catching the bottom of the curtains & falling off the radiator. I've re-hung the curtains on the highest hook & now there's clearance at the bottom!

I'm sharing it as it felt like another small change made in the house that helps make it run more like a practical machine.

Cissyandflora · 18/01/2022 21:29

@PenelopePitstop79

I don't just have pesky, messy corners.
Same here. Absolutely overwhelmed with what I’ve got to try to organise. I’ll stay here for a bit in case of any tips but I’d love to have some physical help!
Dinosauraddict · 18/01/2022 21:47

@8stone13 that sounds like a really sensible change, definitely a little life improvement well done!

8stone13 · 18/01/2022 22:09

Thanks @Dinosauraddict I do think all these little things add up to an easier/slightly less stressed life 🙂

londonmummy1966 · 19/01/2022 00:49

Not much organisation here - I put most of DH's vast CD collection in boxes yesterday for him to strop massively about how I was asking him to digitise them but not digitising my books. Rather P'd off as it is simple to digitise CDs but books have to be scanned page by page. Also I've not bought a physical book if it is available on Kindle for about 4 years... Think I might buy him digitising services for his birthday to make sure they are done.....

I did go round and rewrite all my chalk board labels with my new chalk pencils - they look really neat.

8stone13 · 19/01/2022 21:44

I started my filing today, moving & re-organising it made me realise what needs to be kept & prioritised, so it was a good exercise in itself.

Cissyandflora · 19/01/2022 22:29

I took out two bags of rubbish. And I sorted some picture frames I don’t need. Just realised I left them outside in our common area. I hope the neighbours aren’t upset with me. I’ll go tomorrow and take them out.

Dinosauraddict · 20/01/2022 06:17

I was out most of yesterday so the only organisation thing I managed was labelling my wedding gown storage box! Grin I'll make sure today is more productive!

Nordicmom · 20/01/2022 19:18

I like the strata clippy lidded opaque different size boxes here with black on the clips . I have them in the attic and garage and inside various cupboards . Also like home edit in kitchen cupboards and bathroom drawers and rattan baskets which I have in the same shade all over the house and inside wardrobes too . In wardrobes I also have small white plastic strapping baskets . We have the same / similar demo label maker DH actually bough to label his garage and hobby stuff . In the attic I’m labelling everything . In my vision this new house would be full of empty easy to clean surfaces and and tidy half empty cupboards and our mostly new lovely furniture with a few ornaments, it would have a organised tidy garage and have a neat landscaped garden hopefully with a pool so I was frantically decluttering before our move especially and getting storage solutions for what we kept but there’s lots of work left in the attic once we empty our storage locker , garden needs to be done , still waiting for the shed to be built and for the rest of the garage storage to arrive so DH can organise that properly . Also still need a bit more furniture for the dining room and to decide about a gym . Even had to postpone the shutters after 4 m of waiting for them because of DD getting covid aaarghhh . Bit by bit we will get there though !

Nordicmom · 20/01/2022 19:45

And now DH wants to start a new project with DS who’s doing A-levels and wants to become an engineer ; to build a kit car 😳! I’m sure that would look great on DS CV for unis but my god !! I’m sure that wouldn’t make any mess at all in the garage now already filling up with his giant machinery and endless tools 😒…

Dinosauraddict · 20/01/2022 20:38

A much better day here today - as well as labelling my tea towel storage which has been on the to-do list for a few weeks, I blitzed the playroom storage and finished organising and labelling everything!

Spinnier · 20/01/2022 22:30

Hi, I'm another newbie. We have a project on to refit our understairs cupboard and revamp our lounge diner, and DH has suggested getting rid of the sideboard Shock. We have wardrobe space upstairs, the freedom to do anything under the stairs (but it's pretty small), and we could potentially free up some kallax cubes elsewhere so it's a good idea, but I really need to figure out what's going where.

@Tenam I can 100% relate to what you say about different preferences. I like labelled tubs and I can't cope with bits out everywhere, DH finds categories and tubs a barrier and would rather just put everything out separately on long shelves. There's no middle ground!!

8stone13 · 21/01/2022 09:08

I'm a huge fan of Lock n Lock. If it sits still long enough in my house it ends up in a quality sealed Tupperware container 😀

I found a huge said container in my shed & put all the lightbulbs in it. Do you remember when lightbulbs came in either screw or bayonet, 40W or 60W? Oh for those simple days 😀 I seem to have about 794 different sorts of lightbulbs of varying shapes sizes & wattage. They are now at least all in one contained place rather than balanced on a shelf about to topple off!

LivingInaBuildingSite · 21/01/2022 12:29

Not the hugest step for some but have moved all the kitchen stuff (tins, jars, cat food, juice boxes) out of our front room where it’s lived on shelves for nearly a year back into the new kitchen, yey!

Although it’s all on temp shelves as they haven’t built the pantry or utility room yet but my front room is slowly returning to a ‘reception room’ instead of a kitchen/diner/storage unit!
There’s still lots of crap in there though.
And a fridge and a chest freezer.

A long way still to go!

seperatedmum · 21/01/2022 18:18

I'll try to compress this as much as possible- maybe let them coz I was in a similar position decades ago but didn't get to make anything in or out of uni (engineering) but if I would've done I would've realised I'm a much more practical person and it's just motorsport I'm interested in not studying engineering theory. sorry 🙊
thisyearsuckssofar · 21/01/2022 18:26

Can I also join in please? I have a big house to clear out in a very short space of time. Separation forces sale of house and I'm left on my own to clear, declutter, decorate bits badly needing it, and put house on market. I think I'm going to find it therapeutic to shed the past mentally and physically. This thread will motivate me to do something every day, whether it be bin, charity or decorate.

Dinosauraddict · 21/01/2022 22:27

Welcome @thisyearsuckssofar !

Big win of the day for me was organising all my different rices and pastas into labelled Kilner jars. I also labelled up some of my lazy Susans in the kitchen which is a step in the right direction!

Wildrobin · 21/01/2022 22:27

Even with this lovely thread I went back into denial and not implemented any changes yet. I must start even if in tiny ways next week and going to look up Lock n Lock containers . I’ve also promised a friend to stop saying sorry our house is messy every time she comes !

Wildrobin · 21/01/2022 22:29

Actually I did sort two kitchen cupboards- found a few out of date things that were easy to clear , and rediscovered things I like but hadn’t realised there! So quite positive!
