November Declutter Challenge

Hetyanni · 31/10/2021 08:57

I'm sure there was a thread on this for October but I can't find it now!

I am planning on decluttering 1 item on the 1st November, 2 on the 2nd, 3 on the 3rd and so on for all of November. If I bring anything new into the house, I declutter an extra thing that day so things aren't just being replaced. I am planning on keeping a box in the porch for this purpose so it can be collected together and donated each time there is enough.

Would anyone like to join me?

I’ve decluttered 36 items so far this month. I got rid of 1 item on the 1st day of the month, 2 on the 2nd day etc etc

Tulipmonster · 08/11/2021 19:55

Hats off to you @ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba for mustering the courage to tackle the kids’ clothing sort-out, let alone when recovering from illness… I keep telling myself I’ll get around to starting mine later in the month Confused

Day 8:

  • Out-of-favour toddler snacks that had been lurking in the back of the snack cupboard
  • tube of antibacterial hand cream
  • a broken ornament
  • a stack of Heroes cards that came with Sainsbury’s deliveries
  • glass frosting film left over from a DIY project
  • a beanie
  • a metal rod left over from some DIY
  • a tube of old bonjela

Don’t know why I felt the need to explain the challenge there. 🙄
ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 08/11/2021 20:49

thanks @Tulipmonster

this is the first round, I'm going through ALL of the boxes that containing outgrown clothes.
Today I've gone through 5 boxes, I have now separate piles of girls' & boys' clothes (sorted by age) for friends to go through.
One is coming on Sunday, she has a 3.5 yo and due in a month so I hope she takes a lot of stuff with her!

I have now processed another 6 t-shirts, 2 trousers, 1 skirt & 2 dresses for cloths.
Calling it a day.

Nothing much today, but I missed a bag of yarn ends and general wool craft clutter out yesterday, so that's two more. Takes me to a total of 57 out on balance! I've also remembered there's a box of books that are for the charity shop in the loft. That should add up quite nicely!

Nordicmom · 09/11/2021 09:58

Day 10:

  • 1 big moulting dog bed
  • 2 last remaining old dog bowls made of metal going to the metal collection at the dump
  • 2 dog toys never played with
  • 2 too small kids coats / jackets
  • 1 pair of too small DS trousers
  • 1 Teddy baby rattle
-1 pair of rusty scissors

Need to make calls and book appointments , fold laundry and order things today but I have to get back to the rest of the kids clothes this week ,I want the boxes out of my room !!!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 09/11/2021 10:32

great progress @Nordicmom!

I'm sitting in car summoning up the energy to take the grocery shopping inside.
I'm tempted to have a nap first🤣

I'm waiting for GP to call back then have to call Opticians. DS5 broke his glasses frame a week ago; I superglued it back together and put steri strips on a crushed bit but obv he'll need a new frame, the whole thing looks terrible.

I'll be back on the clothes later

Nordicmom · 09/11/2021 11:00

You and everyone else are doing so well too Zing ! I’m falling asleep here so I’m a actually going to go sleep for a few hours and hopefully dog will do the same downstairs. Then lots of calls to make ,app to book and other admin . Laundry piles are waiting for me

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 09/11/2021 11:05

enjoy your nap

Fallagain · 09/11/2021 12:26

Many items but not a lot of space
113- 177 toiletries for the hygiene bank and some half used make up binned
179 - pile of packaging and random unused items

I’m currently eying up 3 bits of furniture I want to get rid of.

KobaniDaughters · 09/11/2021 18:34

This killed a little bit of my soul but I boxed up 17 books for resale, put another 18 in the local little free library and gave away 22 of my daughter’s to a little girl who lives round the corner

KobaniDaughters · 09/11/2021 18:35

@ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba you’re very kind offering people to come a d choose clothes - I just had off the lot and say to pass on anything they don’t want

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 09/11/2021 19:03

@KobaniDaughters
you did a kind thing too with the books!

I did say to friends that however much they think we help them. they are helping us about 10 times more!
I hate throwing away clothes that are just not good enough to sell on but totally fine for kids to get dirty.

The Tesco shop this morning wore me out too much, like Icarus I overestimated what I could achieve.
I did no sorting today😭
But at least GP called back so I now have antibiotics and I really hope it will clear up this mild chest infection.

Nordicmom · 09/11/2021 21:36

Get better soon Zing

Tulipmonster · 09/11/2021 23:36

Hope you’re on the mend soon @ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba

Day 9 for me:

  • old pepper grinder
  • couple of bags I’d saved from online shopping to package eBay sales in
  • broken lid of toy box
  • bottle of soda water (none of us drink it)
  • old cat bowl
  • out of date eye drops
  • wooden forks that came with food deliveries
  • random plastic thing that was hiding in cutlery drawer
  • hand cream I was never going to get around to using (I seem to have dozens)
ItsNotNormalLove · 09/11/2021 23:47

Day 9:

1 old tshirt
1 pair of holey socks
1 old calendar (2010!!)
5 pots of out of date instant porridge
1 novelty cat-shaped tape measure.

72 items out so far.

Notthissticky · 09/11/2021 23:51

5 pens for recycling and a changing mat + two covers given away, so that's -8. Annoyingly my list got messed up so I don't have an accurate record of what went out anymore...

LuluJakey1 · 09/11/2021 23:58

So far I have decluttered- all to charity shop:
2 bin-bags of baby clothes
Lots of baby toys
A dining table and 4 chairs
Two standard lamps
A rug
An armchair
166 books
73 DVDs
65 CDs
A trolley
3 duvet sets
2 full length wool coats
15 pairs of shoes

I don't know where they all were because there don't seem to be any gaps.

LuluJakey1 · 09/11/2021 23:59

And 4 bin-bags of shredded paperwork.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 10/11/2021 11:57

Anyone wants to talk about socks?🤣

With 9 people in the house we have lots of socks.
Our laundry system involves a box for single socks; everything that can't be immediately paired out of the tumble dryer goes in there.
Then DH or I periodically sort it to match pairs (always find at least a dozen!) the rest goes back for a bit longer.

What I don't know is why we still keep baby single baby, toddler & preschooler sized socks.
DS6 is 7 now, if we haven't found matching pairs in the last years then we never will!
And some bigger sizes have really loose elastic or other damages.

So I went through it today with a ruthless outlook: found 16 pairs, cut up 9 longer ones for disposable tubular bandage, put 31 back for future matches.
I also kept 10 baby socks and will ask kids if they care to pick one each as a keepsake.

But this time I actually threw away 35 single socks! What a feeling! never have to touch them again!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 10/11/2021 12:03

oh an 8 went into the lost & box DS3 is forced to keep because his mates always leave stuff behind!
Last time they stayed for 2 nights, went to 2 different parties, used our hot tub so at the end of that we were left with socks, swimming trucks, a swimming bra, 2 t-shirts, a jumper, a pair of shorts and a bunch of socks

because we don't have enough clothes & washing to do?🤣🤣

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 10/11/2021 12:03

*trunks

not trucks lol

TeacupDrama · 10/11/2021 12:32

i'm a bit behind
set of measuring cups, a vase, a glass paperweight, pair of DH shoes,4 board games, 3 McDonalds toys 2 magazines1 pair of shorts and 1 pair of trousers running total 39items

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 10/11/2021 17:00

more clothes processed (cut up or chucked):

  • 1 baseball cap
  • 2 school shorts
  • 2 jeans
  • 3 single socks & 1 glove
  • 1 swimming cap
  • 37 knickers
  • 1 leggings
  • 1 vest
  • 1 school polo t-shirt
  • 4 t-shirts

I've gone through 4 x 80l boxes so far today!

I got so sick of my socks last year that I chucked them all out and replaced them with all black ones.

I only managed 3 things today, funnily enough it included toddler socks
180 - toddler socks
181 - CD player
182 - Mindfulness CD
