Does anyone do TOMM?

StarryNightSparkles · 26/10/2021 00:20

I've just bought and read Gemma Bray and her method of cleaning. Has anyone done this/do this method. Does it work?

At the moment we either do a one day full blitz or nothing for a while and the house ends up looking disgusting.

All help/tips most welcome

Also does anyone have any tips to remove water marks from shower doors?

Yes I did this for a while. House was so super clean and I felt so virtuous every morning, as I did it after I got the kids up. So it does work and doesn’t feel that onorous. I particularly liked the focus day doing more in one room. It was hard to stop at 30 minutes sometimes.

However now I’m back to more slovenly ways and the house looks less sparkly.

I also still lust after a hand held dyson vacuum. I do think being able to just pick up and go is so much easier than plugging in.

There's a very recent thread on this if you do a search

It wasn't for me. I found it make housework seem an even bigger deal.

Re water marks, If general bathroom cleaner isn't getting rid of the marks, you might need to spray a limescale remover over them. We have a shower squeegee which helps a lot in stopping them initially.

DespairingHomeowner · 26/10/2021 14:04

I’ve been doing it and it works for me : I think the key is that this method means the deep clean stuff happens regularly so it doesn’t build up to the point it’s overwhelming

If I can’t do my tasks during the week for any reason I just do them on Saturday morning, but having a plan gives me structure to know how to use my time

BingBongToTheMoon · 26/10/2021 14:11

Yep. Followed it for years now.
I think it’s great. Highly recommended.

Henrywilldoit · 26/10/2021 19:48

I started it a few weeks ago. It does work. It's not a miracle, it's half term here and the house is messy.

But I've found it less overwhelming than trying to do a big clean all at once. Knowing that everything will have its turn to get dealt with.

I think that the longer you do it for the quicker things become. For example our oven was absolutely disgusting, but now it's been done hopefully it won't get as bad if we do it as part of the Friday focus.

StarryNightSparkles · 28/10/2021 15:12

Thanks very much everyone. I have had a clear out and given loads to the charity shop or to other people. Going to start the one week bootcamp deep clean today. I am glad to read that it helps with not feeling overwhelmed or that niggling feeling that a room hasn't been cleaned. Fingers crossed it makes housework a bit more manageable.

@StarryNightSparkles: think if you can do the bootcamp & then do TOMM for 2-3 weeks you will really see the benefit :)

StarryNightSparkles · 28/10/2021 16:21

Thanks @DespairingHomeowner just had a cup of tea before I start. I feel overwhelmed and have put it off all day 😳 will update this post for accountability when I have completed today's tasks.

I love TOMM my house always looks “visitor ready” and I don’t knock myself out keeping it that way. I use the app and the Facebook group is great for support too.

StarryNightSparkles · 01/11/2021 11:41

I didn't know that there was an app. I will investigate. Thanks for that info.

I have started the week deep clean rota and only have a few rooms left to go. I have made a list for each room for when I get to focus Friday. My house looks so much better, cleaner and clutter free. I don't feel overwhelmed by the house anymore. I feel in control and organized for having structure and a plan.

Newchallenge · 01/11/2021 11:56

Yes, but I haven't done the bootcamp deep clean - which my house really needs. Bad enough keeping up with the daily tasks! I love a tick list though.

StarryNightSparkles · 01/11/2021 12:39

I am the same love a list to tick off. Could you add in deep cleaning bits to your Friday focus?

AnitaMani · 02/11/2021 22:13

Yes. I never had system before, moved to a bigger house and was overwhelmed. It works really well for me.

Bin85 · 03/11/2021 11:10

Yes

Don't always stick to it but it's a good system.

StarryNightSparkles · 03/11/2021 11:46

Great to read that it works well for you Anitamani.

Bin85 how do you re start when you fall away from it?

leeloo1 · 10/11/2021 08:29

@starrynightsparkles - I dip in and out of it as I like the structure… at the moment I have a lot going on, so I’m probably not doing 30 mins a day, but try to get ‘something’ done in the room of the day. I also do still do adhoc bits when I’m in the mood for it or something really needs doing. Clean sheet Tuesday works the best for me as it’s very targeted. I like the podcasts, Gemma is funny and reassuring. ☺️

Suspiciousmind20 · 11/11/2021 22:14

Have never heard of this. It looks great. Thanks for posting this. I’m going to see if I can get buy in from the rest of the family. Sooo excited. I’m finding it so hard to keep on top.

Real Life Organising book is good too - it has helped no end with de-cluttering and understanding mine and DH different styles and what solutions we need.

Suspiciousmind20 · 11/11/2021 22:15

What is Clean Sheet Tuesday please? Does it just mean clean sheets on Tuesday?

Icantremembermyusername · 11/11/2021 22:20

I love Team Tomm! I have the app but i do cheat! I work full time, so sometimes I roll over all the tasks to a Friday and do them all powered by wine. 2.5 hours on a Friday covers all the housework!

Yes - it’s clean sheet Saturday in my house, but having a day helps to get it done regularly!
leeloo1 · 14/11/2021 08:08

@Suspiciousmind20 - yes, bedroom day is Tuesday, so it gets called clean sheet day - and there are frequent prompts to remember to get the beds remade before bedtime ! 🤣

@DespairingHomeowner - Tuesday is a weird day to do it I agree, I would change the day but it feels wrong and I like the camaraderie of everyone doing it on the same day. 🙂

MrsGatsby99 · 14/11/2021 08:31

Definitely has helped me loads especially doing little and often with the level 1s. I would just start with that for a week or so and get that set.

Term time, i can't always fit in the level twos each day but sometimes do 15 minutes or do weekly home blessing instead (flylady).
School holidays, i follow TOMM and house is very clean. Cumulative effect.
I moved clean sheet Tuesday to Saturday.
Also, added 10 minute tidy a few times a week.

Suspiciousmind20 · 14/11/2021 09:19

Thanks Despairing and Leeloo. I’ll have a think about the best day for us.

One thing I’m wondering, from looking at it, is about washing. Load of washing on in the morning or evening. But what about putting it out and then away? Is there a good system for that? We don’t have a drier so at this time of year we have to dry inside so if it’s not on radiators it takes two days to dry.

DespairingHomeowner · 14/11/2021 09:39

@Suspiciousmind20: I’d put a wash on in the morning, dry all day, fold at night … then if it’s not dry you can leave last bits overnight

If can’t find in morning, put on machine but hit GO when you come home then hang out for a night & next day & fold next evening…. The best is to find a way that works on your routine & be consistent about it so it doesn’t pile up to an overwhelming amount

I tend to do any ironing 1x week as there is not much ironed here but some people might iron each load

Suspiciousmind20 · 14/11/2021 09:41

Thanks despairing. Smile
