Tiny Shitty Little Flies

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 24/09/2021 23:17

Feels like they are everywhere flying in my face but in reality only a few.

No obvious cause

House really clean

No rotting fruit or veg

Had some issues with the drains but now resolved.

Ideas? Confused

Do you have houseplants?
I’m fairly sure they come from the compost - I’ve got loads (plants and little flies)

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 24/09/2021 23:32

Zero Houseplants. Do sometimes have Flowers In A Vase, currently empty.

Fungus gnats. Just looked it up as DH and I were only talking about them earlier. Not sure what to do now!

Pantsomime · 24/09/2021 23:34

Growing Coriander or basil from supermarket?

peachgreen · 24/09/2021 23:34

Vinegar in a cup with clingfilm over it and a few holes poked in. Works a treat.

PlatinumBrunette · 24/09/2021 23:34

Ah. Don’t know then, sorry!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 24/09/2021 23:36

No. Really not green fingered. Had issues a few years ago and it was caused by them being attracted to the pods inside a coffee maker, but thats gone now.

@peachgreen

Like malt vinegar or another kind?

Yes malt vinegar will work!

Didifuckitup · 24/09/2021 23:50

If they are a brown orange colour and seem to want to fly in your face and dive bomb at your dinner.. then fruit flies.
Can come In from the shops on your fruit too. Store it all in fridge and look for any rogue bits of food around bins etc. Animal food, veg , fruit, alcohol, anything sweet or acidic that’s out, they will smell it.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 24/09/2021 23:52

Exactly what they are fly right at my face

They often come into the house on fruit from the supermarket so wash them as soon as you get home.

Get some of those fly sticky things and stick under cupboards. Gross but effective.

You have to be thorough to get rid, they breed rapidly. Any smell that could be attracting them needs eradicated. Store all fruit in fridge. Wash down all bins areas etc. Nothing out of cupboards that they might like. Try down the sides of cooker etc places you might not realise a bit food has gotten stuck.

1/2 Cup of any vinegar, with a splash of washing up liquid in it, mix, cover with cling film and poke holes in the top. Leave out where they are the most and the will go in and drown in the liquid. Gross but works the fastest!

supermoonrising · 25/09/2021 11:33

Put any fruit or veg sitting outside in the fridge for a few days. Ive found thats the easiest way.

HereticFanjo · 26/09/2021 13:27

We are being tortured with fruit flies at the minute. The buggers seem to come in on bananas quite often. At least once a year sometimes twice they appear. They tend not to stay around long luckily.

ForkedIt · 26/09/2021 13:30

Isn’t that the title of Liane Moriarty’s newest novel? Grin

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 26/09/2021 14:46

I need to go out and get vinegar but I have flu and I don't want dirty looks in the shops

OP posts:
Mooncats · 26/09/2021 14:47

Pour bleach down the drains and leave overnight

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 26/09/2021 14:50

You can buy yellow sticky things that they are attracted to. That sorts them out

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 26/09/2021 14:53

@Mooncats

Is normal Domestos ok?

Anything that will attract them can be used instead of vinegar - apple cut up into bits, swished grapes, a bit of wine, some apple juice etc!
EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 26/09/2021 14:55

Ok cool

Are they drain flies or fruit flies..?

Drain flies look like tiny mini moths
Fruit flies are like flying dots

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 26/09/2021 15:19

Definitely like dots, fly right into your face
