Is anyone doing this/just started?

We just started this week and oh my goodness, our house is clean! Someone could turn up unexpectedly and I could let them in and not die of shame!

Even toddler DD came downstairs today and said 'Oh, it's clean here!' Blush Grin

Oh interesting that others find the kitchen the worst! I defo have been. I was blaming not doing boot camp first... My kitchen wall is being removed on Friday so I'm just keeping keeping it functional for now.

DespairingHomeowner · 20/09/2021 17:16

Well, for context, whenever I’ve had a cleaner they spend 1 hour on kitchen, 1-2 hours on rest of house (living room, bathrooms, bedroom on that time usually, plus hall/stairs)

I think in kitchen there is just more to do, & the cleaning is more difficult as it’s dirt & grease vs a bit of dust

HemanOrSheRa · 20/09/2021 18:28

I am DONE! Level 1's and 2's! Bit later than I'd prefer. I got held up at work then DS came home from college while I was mid living room. Although it's only my second week doing TOMM properly I definitely noticed a difference. The living room was nowhere near as dusty, in fact, usually I'd have left it! I think that's down to vacuuming every day.

I agree that the kitchen is the worst - here it's because DS makes food/drinks, flinging stuff everywhere. He thinks he's wiped up but he hasn't. At least he tries! And DP makes an unholy mess when he cooks dinner.

I've got a Eufy robovac. He is excellent - unfortunately the dogs HATE him so I have to time putting him on carefully or it causes Armageddon Grin. I might try setting it for early morning this week.

Indecisivelurcher · 20/09/2021 20:43

So close to a full house today, but mop was a step too far!

SylvanasWindrunner · 20/09/2021 20:48

We managed everything I think, and even squeezed in a quick car clean as it's going in for its MOT tomorrow. Didn't do sofa throws but did those last week so they didn't need. Oh and I didn't hoover the sofa cushions/crevices but I peered at them and they looked okay (and couldn't be arsed).

Bedroom today tomorrow and I can't actually remember whether I changed the sheets last Tues or not. Maybe I posted about it here - will go look!

Today I:

  • did my daily tasks, hoovered the stairs (with a cordless) & got robovac out in the kitchen

As I’d scrubbed the house this weekend was barely anything to do, but managed to sort out spare duvets etc & pack away so that was a good bit of organising

freezerdinners · 21/09/2021 06:45

Hi again! Enjoying this thread as it motivates me to keep going. Three weeks in of doing TOMM so far.

Does anyone do this method AND have a cleaner? We have someone who comes fortnightly, and does pretty basic cleaning. I'm reluctant to give her up but I do want my house to feel more in order for the rest of the time - and also for things like dust under the furniture or dirty plug holes not to build up.

I'm seeing if the prompts can help me keep things tidier, and remember the out of sight stuff a bit more.

Has anyone combined the method with a cleaner in a productive way?

Thanks!

Wilma55 · 21/09/2021 07:26

Sylvanas you could do your sheets on odd (or even) number weeks?

DollyPartBaked · 21/09/2021 07:46

@freezerdinners we also have a cleaner who comes fortnightly and it's great because for about 8 hours then entire house feels clean (and that feeling is worth the money) but it is just superficial. The cleaner cleans the bedrooms so quickly it is just a basic hoover and wipe down. She definitely doesn't do under the furniture! Plus it was taking me ages to get the place ready to be cleaned which was not appreciated by DH.

I think having a cleaner even weekly leads to a false sense of security (at least in my DH's case) that you never ever have to clean again!

Yesterday I managed some of Level 1 but got distracted by sorting out the kid's clothes but that was a big job. So today I am on catch up. Bedrooms are the worst day but in week 3 I definitely think I am starting to notice a difference. It doesn't feel as insurmountable!

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 21/09/2021 08:11

I did level 1 yesterday but skived off level 2. I'll tackle yesterday's with today's this morning, I'm not letting myself get into the habit of skipping days! So it's office, dining room, bathrooms, our bedroom and the hall today. At least our room was eufyed (eufied?) yesterday so I don't need to hoover it.

The front door doesn't need cleaning as much as usual; DH sealed the front step with PVA while he was doing the garage floor, so it's throwing up much less dust onto the door. I love getting one-offs done and knowing they're fixed forever, it's so satisfying.

CauliflowerCheese30 · 21/09/2021 10:15

Girls bedroom is done, landing hoovered too, it was covered in the little black bits you get from astro turf!! Will hoover downstairs later after work, and put the clean washing away, really really really hate that job!!

teaandbiscuitsforme · 21/09/2021 10:35

I've been following this thread for the last week or so and it prompted me to download the app. I've been feeling like a fraud because I also have a cleaner so I'm pleased to see a couple of people also have cleaners! My cleaner comes once a week because I normally work, my DC are quite young, we've got a dog and DH is currently working somewhere on the other side of the world so it's a bit of a necessity at the moment! I love TOMM though because I wanted something else to keep on top of the daily jobs and the deeper things that I just don't do. And I love a ticklist! Grin

DespairingHomeowner · 21/09/2021 10:44

@freezerdinners: I’ve had cleaners at various points, go into this as realised my new cleaner is not doing a v good job

I may continue with this & get a new cleaner in a few weeks - & give her the Friday focus and some ironing, vs paying for a superficial clean. I find cleaners don’t tend to do as good a job as me but it can be a necessity if busy

teaandbiscuitsforme · 21/09/2021 11:11

I have to say I absolutely love my cleaner. She alternates doing the kitchen and living room more in-depth each week so she does pull out furniture which is a huge help.

SylvanasWindrunner · 21/09/2021 14:36

I've toyed with getting a cleaner and eventually messaged one I liked the sound of and she's fully booked! Bah. I feel like I would want them to come and do the deeper stuff - day to day we have it sussed so not that bothered about hoovering and mopping but I still would quite like help with stuff like skirting boards, kitchen cupboards, bathroom.

Going to buy my robot vacuum today! V excited!

OP posts:
freezerdinners · 21/09/2021 17:19

I definitely got I to a false idea that I didn't have to clean because we had a cleaner.... But then something would catch my eye and I'd spend ages giving it a deep clean.

I don't have particularly high standards I just want it to feel more under control - hard with building work and 3 DC! I think once building work finishes it will be much easier. Hopefully. Grin

I like the whole house being clean thing and also the idea of giving her some of the Friday focus jobs to make her work a little more on the deep clean side while I (hopefully) keep on top of the day to day.

Wilma55 · 21/09/2021 18:15

SylvanasWindrunner please let me know how you get on with robovac as I'm definitely keen to get one. Apart from load of washing I haven't done any housework today!

SylvanasWindrunner · 21/09/2021 18:21

He's arriving on Thursday and has already been named Augustus! Amazon had a deal on for £70 off plus a free set of bathroom scales worth £45 so I'll try flog those I think as we don't need them.

Well. I forget if this is week 2 or week 3 of TOMM here. 2 I think. But what it defo is, is the first time I've ticked everything off the list!!! And I defo was not up for it. Did the washing and tidying up this morning before work, then did the dusting and vacuuming while dc were in the bath.

SylvanasWindrunner · 22/09/2021 12:09

Hall day! Doesn't need much done so going to do some kitchen bits as well I think!

Would anyone be willing to offer an opinion on my house design?! I have a small room going in that's 260cm long and 155cm wide. It needs to house the downstairs loo, and I can't decide what to do with the rest of it. Would you rather have a small utility, so enough space for washing machine and tumble drier, and then in the main kitchen include a large cupboard for things like mop, vacuum, dog food, and find a separate space for coats, shoes etc. Or a large cupboard cloakroom leading into the wc, meaning the washing machine and tumble drier are in the main kitchen?

SylvanasWindrunner · 22/09/2021 13:45

I think personally I would prefer the utility - we just added one and it's nice having washing machine and drier in a separate room and we gained some much needed kitchen cupboard space too. We have coats hanging on back of door to our big kitchen cupboard that has dog food and animal stuff in (which I am making this Friday focus as it needs a proper clean out!)

This sounds great, i can't believe i've not being doing this!

I've had a look on the website, but I'm missing when the bathroom gets cleaned? I tend to do the full bathroom once a week sometimes once a fortnight if i haven't got around to it. The only full bathroom clean I can see is one week of Friday focus, am i missing it somewhere else? I also see a quick bathroom clean once a day, but i'm not trudging all the cleaning bits up the stairs every day to do the bath one day, s ink the next, loo the next, i just blitz it all in one go once a week. Am I missing something?

I keep cleaning stuff in the bathroom and just do a different thing every day, often when I go for a wee (I drink a lot of tea so am in and out of there a lot Grin). Furries posted earlier in the thread with an easy to remember list - today is W for Wednesday so 'wet stuff' here - bath and sink!
OP posts:
SylvanasWindrunner · 22/09/2021 14:16

But you can always change it to suit - if you don't have much to do on hall day, for example, you can add bathroom stuff in to that maybe? I steal from hall day to do kitchen stuff!
