Bathroom flooring

We are having our house renovated and need to choose floor for family bathroom. It is a big room so will be lots of sq metres. Budget running out as work on house runs on...

I don't know what to put on floor. Tiles I think too cold. Don't want carpet. Considering cork tiles as quite eco, hard wearing and warm, but are they too 1970s?

Opinions please!

Porcelain tiles aren't too cold

have a ook at some vinyls.
i know they have a cheesy rep (and im vtasteful in general) but honestly, i think some of them are pretty cool. on the whole, esp ones which dont try to pretend to be wood or marble... but my mind changed on that when i got a cheap offcut of 'oak plank effect' stuff to put under kids eating table a year or so ago. it actually looked really good! better than the laminate in the kitchen at the time.

vinyl is warm and soft underfoot, easy to clean, waterproof...

theres a white one with raised circles on called 'dots' or something. i really liked that one for our family bathroom. got something else in the end but... have a look thru the massive sample books in big carpet warehouse type stores.

pointydog · 23/11/2007 21:48

vinyl is good, just not fashionable. soft, easy to clean properly. Tiles are feckin freezing. And so hard that things'll smash on them.

pointydog · 23/11/2007 21:49

and wood effect lino does look pretty good even though you kow it shouldn't

look at bathroom brochures - they're full of it

StressTeddy · 23/11/2007 21:50

My name is stessteddy and I love lino
It's the bees imo!

weasle · 23/11/2007 21:51

Thanks for speedy replies. Will look at vinyl again. I take it you all think cork too naff then?

If you're bathroom is tres modern then I think cork would look great

StressTeddy · 23/11/2007 21:53

you're???? your

somersetmum · 23/11/2007 21:53

Another vote for tiles and underfloor heating. We have just put this down, its not as expensive as you think and its fab.

SlightlyMadScreachingSirens · 23/11/2007 21:54

SIL had cork...ripped it up after 3 months.

IIRC it got stained with toothpaste, got wet and didn't dry properly and went mouldy - you would think cork should repell the water but it didn't seem to...

Spidermama · 23/11/2007 21:54

I like rubber floor tiles in bathrooms.

Pollyanna · 23/11/2007 21:57

we have got painted floorboards (white) - it looks really nice, but don't know yet how practical it will be as it is fairly recent. But it was cheap

Carnival · 23/11/2007 21:58

I agree with PD. I think vinyl is good if you've got wee ones, less slippy, warm, more cushionedy (that can't be a real word!) and easy to keep clean. Plus, it's cheaper than tiles and is easily replaced when the kids are older, or when finances allow. There are some really cool ones out there, too.

KristinaM · 23/11/2007 21:59

ceramic tiles very slippy in family bathroom unless you choose carefully

Cam · 23/11/2007 22:00

Yes porcelain is better, its nice and matt.

zippitippitoes · 23/11/2007 22:00

we have oak which seems fine tho theoretically it shouldn't be

HeyThereBert · 23/11/2007 22:06

ooh spidermama, i loooooove rubber flooring. you can get sheet flooring as well as tiles, but it comes in better colours as tiles.#

but op is on a tight budget, and vinyl is cheaper. there are some really fab vinyls honestly, you just have to wade through some ugly stuff to find it.

pointydog · 23/11/2007 22:11

yes yes, on a budget, get a good vinyl. Britain is not the country fvor tile floors

Wheelybug · 23/11/2007 22:11

We have stone - not too cold at all but I think you either love tiled bathroom floors or not.

Heated · 23/11/2007 22:15

I'd go for vinyl, it's much better quality, warm enough underfoot, easy to clean, affordable, loads of designs to choose from.

I have ceramic tiles which I regret since ds split his head open on them, they cost more and often involve having the floor reinforced if it's a modern house.

weasle · 23/11/2007 22:16

Yes, adore the rubber, but had eliminated it due to cost. Like the sound of the 'dots' vinyl or maybe wood effect.

Will the carpet company fit the vinyl? Was going to get my builder brother to do cork tiles but big sheet of vinyl sounds like needs a pro.
