Hello and welcome to the July 2021 Fledgling Flylady Thread. Thank you Willow for an excellent pair of June threads. Welcome to one and all, old hands and newbies, lurkers and longtime posters and anyone in between. This thread keeps us vaguely on track with Flylady and is where we post our Ta Das and Yes Ta Das (what we did yesterday 😁), our To Dos and To Didn'ts, and discuss anything that comes to mind (often not housekeeping!).

The beauty of Flylady is that you are never behind, the whole system repeats every month, just jump in wherever. The aim is to gradually get into good habits and regular routines that keep the house ticking over rather than having a huge blitz on it.

To help you with this I'll be posting links to Flyady's Flight Plan and other useful parts of the website, which is updated daily, it's also good to go in and have a browse (some of it is a bit twee though). Do NOT sign up for the emails, you will be inundated.

The system divides the house up into weekly zones, then in each zone there will be timefor decluttering, a small daily task (the Mission) and each day of the week has a theme too (eg Errand Day). You can switch things around to suit your circumstances, there is a weekly Sneak Peek page to help you plan ahead. There are also 31 Babysteps, small daily habits to adopt (eg wearing shoes around the house if you'd rather not). Finally Flylady wants you to make time for you and your family, so weekends are more relaxed.

Jargon
Flylady (and the thread!) has a little bit of her own peculiar jargon it can help to know:
S&S - swish and swipe - a quick go round a bathroom or cloakroom to keep it acceptably fresh
LoL load of laundry. We are not collapsing into hysterical laughter over the state of our washing baskets
Hotspots any areas that tend to collect clutter no matter how often you clear them - mine is definitely the corner of the worksurface by the kitchen door, and the bookshelf at the bottom of the stairs
5 minute room rescue a quick whizz round any room to create a semblance of order
Weekly Home Blessing (often Home Bleugh here) - an hour a week to keep the house acceptable. I think this can only be done in an hour if you only have one bed in the house to change, so take it with a pinch of salt. I spread mine over the week as I cannot get it down to an hour and don't have an hour to give to it either.
Ned and Ted - imaginary friends often draughted in to assist with washing and ironing
BRC Bag, or box, of Random Crap
(D)LMS (Didn't) Lose My Shit - often a necessary acronym around spouses and teens!
Naughty Corner - the thread's imaginary space for rest and recuperation when it all gets too much. Often stocked with soft cushions, blankets, drinks and snacks. May or may not have a free bar, fire place, sunloungers, hot and cold running barmen etc.
Cherry waves 🍒👋 - lovely type for cheery wave that stuck!
All Fed and No One Dead - a good outcome to a busy day.

The beauty of Flylady is that is can be adapted to any household setup - lots of DC or just one, or none; a partner / spouse, or ex, or those going it alone; those working within or outside the home; shiftwork, you name it.

Our motto is No Fledgling Left Behind, so if you are a returner or a lurker, welcome on board, there is always space her for more Fledglings.

If you look up bookmark reading dancing you can do online help
Google penguin reading volunteers and it will give you a load of links to places that will bite your arm off for help💞

halfhope · 18/07/2021 14:34

yup I didn't know that about synaesthesia. My husband has it - music has a colour.

SingToTheSky · 18/07/2021 14:35

Hi zoo 💜💐

Still surrounded by the books and feeling a tad overwhelmed. But we’ve got another pile of recycling out and maybe 30ish more books to sell (annoyingly I forgot to count this time).

Anyway those piles have been taken to the right places to clear a bit of space (in my brain as much as the living room!). Most other books are piled up into categories so I just (just! 😩) need to look through in detail to thin them out. Aaaargh.

HillsBesideTheSea · 18/07/2021 15:00

music is feelings to me. tonality of the music is very important. Some tonal ranges just make me anxious, other chill me out.

I have done work (took about an hour) and a food shop - lots of cba to cook foods.

And now i am sinking back into cold water with a book before taking a nap. this heat kills me.

I bought a wide brimmed floppy hat earlier. Scare myself when my thought as purchasing it was "now i just need a hat pin to stop it blowing away" when did i get to be 90?
ShockShock

Dancingtomusic · 18/07/2021 15:04

Hills- i love a hatpin....dont know where to purchase a hatpin. I hit the age 90 along time ago. Its quite nice here. (Makes a nest)

Zoo- thats great thank you! I will go have a look! 💖

Stilllivinginazoo · 18/07/2021 15:20

hills I just thought it was me that found some music /tones makes me very anxious...

Tada
Cats fed
Wash on
BRC sorting
Wash on line,more in
Co op at stupid o'clock for some supplies with ds
Wipe and put away
Wash on line,more in
Head Waitrose at 10am,hoping not to melt with dd2
Hellish walk uphill home
Shop wipe and put away
Wash added to line, half bought in
More wash on
Lunch
Spent bit too long scrolling...

To do
Sort cupboard understairs overflow food storage
Washing that dry ironed
Get rest today wash targets done and dry,or hung up indoors at least
Empty cupboard that contains boiler in girls room if doom as engineer coming tom to tackle water pressure
I also need to clear him a space to work
Sort bins
Litter trays need a scrub

Hoping to fit in a gentle stroll 6ish if cool enough as that's my soothing routine, esp as often there are wild bunnies around that time of day 💞

All I want to do is still quiet and still.ive developed hideously dry eyes and fans are so uncomfortable.if I sit still in front room I'm warm, but not melting....

SingToTheSky · 18/07/2021 15:22

Another 8 to the sale pile. And have decided on some more which are 100% definitely being kept which feels like a significant achievement too.

YupIHave · 18/07/2021 15:27

Good to see you back zoo. I haven't done half the things on the list as it's too hot to move. DP says I look like a southern belle stretched out on the sofa

SingToTheSky · 18/07/2021 15:57

Aaaargh brain ache. I was planning to fully organise all the shelves but I think what I might have to do for now is put all the “definitely keeping” books back on the shelves even if they aren’t perfectly organised 🤔

Then I’ll see exactly what still needs sorting.

I also have a small pile of “read once then pass on” books so I really need to get through those! (As well as the one normal book and two kindle books I’m currently reading, and I wanted to finish rereading Northern Lights since we were reading that to DS until recently)

Stilllivinginazoo · 18/07/2021 16:11

I may or may not have offered to reread the marvellous Maurice with D's sing as he's very unsettled he's returned to having stories read and cuddles.funny at 15+ and taller than me to have him snuggle up,but nice.hes asked me to get watership down to share,so must order that later!
Yup have you a nice mint julep or iced tea to hand?

Tada
All washing that's been on line is dry,so now sat on ironing board looking at me
Just drag everything out boiler cupboard so man can sort the pressure to.ram loads stuff lil zoo blanket box, guitar behind door, nets cuddlies/ teddies strung onto ends curtain poles for now
I've found piles school books wanted to keep.a precious year 1 English has been found.some classic child spelling howlers but nothing as impressive as dd2 drawing of herself in a pinny saying she wanted to be a cock when she grew up as likes making foodand being a cooker would be fun

HillsBesideTheSea · 18/07/2021 16:18

Hat pins I am sure lots of other places might have it I just already knew they did.

I think i am going to eat tea and call it quits. See what tomo brings. I have spent the last 3 hours in water reading a book and apparently i am exhausted.

SingToTheSky · 18/07/2021 17:06

The Caglets don’t want to be read to at bedtime anymore :( I’m excited for when I can start on chapter books with Cagletini but I’m also not keen to rush on from the picture books we share a gazillion of every night just yet 😁

Thankfully DS is happy to be read to as part of “school” so we usually have a book on the go - DH finished reading northern lights to him the other week but I wanted to read it myself properly too as I hadn’t on years.

I’ve given up on the book sorting for now but I’m pleased with what I’ve achieved today. Absolutely loads out and some partly organised shelves. The rest are piled up by the old piano to try and sort (hopefully tomorrow).

For now I’m trying to figure out Skype for tomorrow.

SingToTheSky · 18/07/2021 17:21

Skype good… pc itself being an absolute pain in the arse. Marvellous. Must remember to get everything up and running long in advance tomorrow Hmm

YupIHave · 18/07/2021 17:27

Ta-da
Shopping list done
Shopping done (bought enough milk for the week -I'm looking at you DP)
2 LoL done
DS's room hoovered thoroughly, furniture moved by DP, dusting done on every surface and on walls too. Bedding washed, including duvet. I need another lie down on the sofa or maybe another shower.

No, zoo just cold grapes and water. SadMint julep would be authentic.

Baked potato, salad inc guacamole for dinner tonight for DP and myself. DS is frustratingly very restrictive with his food so 1 of his 4 dinners he eats.

SingToTheSky · 18/07/2021 17:30

Oooh. Baked potato is a good shout.

Stilllivinginazoo · 18/07/2021 19:17

I CBA and am making sandwiches...

I was on insta and someone recommended KC davis.shes created a book and SM posts for the overwhelmed, chronically ill, depressed,ADHD kinda can't get my house straight kinda peopleI may have ordered the book along with watership down....

Stilllivinginazoo · 18/07/2021 19:18

Ironing done
Boiler cupboard empty/space for workman
Melted trying calm dd2 with walk forgetting 6pm wasn't going to be cool this evening we did however see 7bunnies,some super tinies,so was semi worth it!

Still need bag up bins, then it's time to flop on sofa

TheHoneyBadger · 18/07/2021 19:46

Ok so I did my po3 plus sorted through ds's clothes and put a lot of a gifting page on facebook. 2/3 collected already, 1/3 collections to be arranged. They included new branded stuff never worn and I probably should have tried to sell but honestly ease and speed one out over money and I've had some nice things from that page too.

Much sunbathing. I applied supposed once a day factor 50 sunscreen to my face several times today but still have a burnt nose Hmm Have had a nice cool shower, applied after sun and am laying on my bed with the fan on. Haven't eaten today and no appetite and no sign of ds who went out hours ago so.... Guess I will try and call him and see what he's up to and if I need to cook. Hadn't realised the time.

TheHoneyBadger · 18/07/2021 19:47

*won out. Sorry. Apparently I can't type after not eating and drinking and gin and tonic in the sunshine Blush

HillsBesideTheSea · 18/07/2021 20:16

i have staked the cover over the veg, watered up, put on a uniform wash and eaten water melon for tea and drunk a cup full of beef stock (oxo cube if you be curious). I can never eat when it gets super hot so the stock cube helps balance out the electrolytes a bit with all the extra water i drink. I had proper food earlier in the day and will eat a bit meal in the morning (flipped it around) so i can get away with light picky food in the evening.

my nap was amazing. but i am going back into cold water to read a book and sip on sleep aid tea. Alarm is set for 5am so that i can move the furniture (or at lease some of it) before it gets super super hot.

IWillWashTheGreenWillow · 18/07/2021 21:02

Omg. Totally exhausted, please excuse bullet point post.
Wallpapering finished into second corner and two sets of shelves back up and refilled.
Some books rehomed to other bits of house
Some paper put out
Pizza for dinner (left DH in charge)
Game of family Cards Against Humanity played
So tired I can't type and keep walking into things.
29 degrees in our bedroom despite windows and blackout blind shut once the sun got round there.
Banging headache behind my right eye.

Calling it a night and getting up early tomorrow!

Zoo ❤️❤️

YupIHave · 18/07/2021 22:07

iWill sounds exhausting. Hope you can sleep off your headache

Ta-da
Finished sorting out DS room: still need to buy a couple boxes for Lego
Plants watered
Clothes ready for work tomorrow
DS got his clothes ready and partly packed stuff to spend day at GPs tomorrow
List written of stuff I need for work and stuff DS still needs for the day.

Checked work email so I know what to expect when I walk in tomorrow
Made apple crumble but not muffins

To-do
Waiting for washing machine to finish so that I can clothes out.

Night everyone. Hope we all sleep well despite the heat.

EverythingDelegated · 18/07/2021 22:27

Evening all,

Willow - family version Cards Against Humanity played here last night, DS has played the adult version with friends but says he'd be embarrassed to play it with us Grin. Tonight it was the turn of Monopoly which will take up tomorrow evening too. Pottered around several towns today, there is a sea breeze here which we are very grateful for.

SingToTheSky · 18/07/2021 22:59

Love a bit of CAH but playing the regular version with my DSCs certainly stopped me thinking of them as sweet innocent kids anymore 😩🤣

Sorted a few more games this evening. Actually recycled a few very tatty ones (mostly card games) as well as putting a few in the selling cupboard.

Many many items ready to leave the house, and only three coming in (someone was selling a game I have wanted for ages, and we are replacing just one book each that have got irreparably tatty) so I’m quite pleased overall. Plus lots of general stuff sorted from BRCs - bag for life of recycling and the same of normal rubbish.

Can’t believe it’s 11pm already! I had best try and sleep really. Ready for Freedom Day Hmm (doesn’t make much difference to me, in terms of practicalities)

Stilllivinginazoo · 19/07/2021 05:31

It's too blinking hot to sleep
Didn't settle til gone 12
Awake just after 3
Giving up and getting up to home bleurgh before so hot I melt doing it....
