Anyone else got SLUGS invading their house?....

at night? They are never there during the day, but the trails are there in the morning. LOTS of trails.

How do they get in and how do I deter them?(I can't pin down exactly where they are coming in, and don't want to cover the whole of my room in salt!)

No, but I have moles burrowing up through the sitting room floor and spoiling the shag pile

Niecie · 22/11/2007 23:44

We had a mouse in our kitchen a few months ago - I was tempted to let it live if he gorged himself on a diet of slugs but sadly no, it wasn't interested. Plan B was that the slugs gorged themselves on a diet of mouse poison but apparently they are immune to the stuff. Weird little buggers.

Sorry - laptop has probably been infested with slugs.

LittleBella · 22/11/2007 23:45

Ooh, I once had a bird in my bedroom. It flew down the chimney then round and round and round my bedroom, much to my hysteria. luckily there was a man around ot deal with it

Fridayfeeling · 22/11/2007 23:49

Back to the slugs..I have been thinking of drawing a maze on the kitchen floor in SALT. Will they be clever enough to get through the maze? I reckon they will. As I said, mine can open butter dishes - MY SLUGS are Sooooooooo advanced.

handlemecarefully · 22/11/2007 23:51

I like the maze. It unleashes your creative side, so is a positive approach to slug infestation...

Niecie · 23/11/2007 00:00

Does anybody get snails as well,or are we particularly blessed on that front? We get teeny tiny ones in the kitchen along with the big slugs.

DontCallMeBaby · 23/11/2007 09:10

A bird got into my bedsit when I was first out of university; unfortunately for it it got in, went to sleep, and only work up when I'd gone away for the weekend. So it flew around, crapped over everything and then died. Good job it was only a weekend, so it hadn't gone off by the time I got back. I tried enlisting the medical students down the road, but none of them were out of bed, so I had to use half a roll of kitchen paper, several plastic bags and a pair of oven gloves to get rid of it.

I dreamt about mice last night, I'm sure it was the result of this thread.

at Friday's G&T slugs ...

NormaStanleyFletcher · 23/11/2007 11:35

Oh I have had birds in my house too

Two baby wrens this summer - one of which flew in the french windows and landed on my head while I was bf

we get tiny snails as well as the slugs.

the trails in our front room also start and end in the front room - how?

I hate the fuckers.

They all come out and party when we are asleep.

Woe betide anyone who comes down in the night without shoes/lights on etc.

TrinityRhino · 23/11/2007 21:15

I have the horrid slug trail fest every morning too and I think they are super slugs

can't stand the bastards things

dont really wan to salt the place cause that inevitably mean we salt gecko too

LilyLoo · 23/11/2007 21:20

we have been blaming the dog for briging them in. Ours seem to be around the condensor dryer. Had a massive one in the dog food bowl but dp salted it.

onlyjoking9329 · 23/11/2007 21:25

i get up a lot in he night and the slimy
feckers slugs are partying in my kitchen, i add to the party spirt and give them a salt bath

Niecie · 24/11/2007 00:59

Has nobody got a cure other than salting them? Something to stop the little buggers breeding and taking over the world?

3missyshohoho · 24/11/2007 09:20

Thank goodness there is other people about like us, I thought I was going insane thinking their was a slug out to get me! There has been a trail over the girls pram in the porch every now and again after a night and the trail gets bigger - so it is obviously growing! But we can never catch the bugger - have tried the beer and the salt but nothing, in the end we left the pram outside one night and touch wood we haven't had any more trails, so think the bugger was living on the pram - yuk! Really thought I would have to sit out all night in the porch with my salt grinder to catch it though - NOW I do sound completly potty!

My mum gets slugs in her basement flat. She shows a commendably Buddhist attitude to them.

I was drawn to this thread because SLUGS is one of the nearly-acronyms for my dd's school that the girls enjoy using!

MascaraOHara · 24/11/2007 09:37

Sorry, no slugs here but just caught up with this when saw the title and the penny dropped re. your comment on my mice.. poor you but ROFL @ this thread!

I watched a tv programme once where they had slugs and they said how to get rid of them but I can't for the life of me remember, sorry

peanutbear · 24/11/2007 09:40

You have all made me feel so much better
I too suffer at the hands of slugs!!!

So much so I once became convinced they were living in the sofas - bught new ones!! but alas the problem was not cured

and they seem to have much more sex than me bastards!!! loads of baby slugs
luckily the dog eats them !! mwahhh

LilyLoo · 24/11/2007 14:22

some ideas here

rantinghousewife · 24/11/2007 14:24

We get them too, went to check the front door was locked one night (in the dark) and trod right on one of the little feckers. Haven't seen any since.

AMerryScot · 24/11/2007 14:25

We haven't had any for several weeks - no idea why

We usually get an autumn invasion, only really detectable if you get up in the night and go into the kitchen. We have a tiled floor, and the slugs tend to move along the grooves, so their trails aren't evident.

They like darkness, and turn away from light. If the light gets left on, there are no slugs.

I'm not sure where ours come in, or where they are during the day. I know that it has nothing to do with how clean the floor is.

The key thing is to make sure you put the lights on, or to put your shoes on, if you are venturing out in the night.

Indith · 24/11/2007 14:33

Yay other people have slugs! Never seen a live one but every morning the kitchen is covered in trails. Being bothered by it seems like far too much effort though

Handlemecarefully I have had rats too.

fizzbuzz · 24/11/2007 15:27

This thread is making me heave.

I now live in a slug free house, (but millions of snails to comensate), but in old slug house stepped on one when I was 1/2 awake.

After retching with disgust ( literally dry heaves), had to have a bath, clean out bath, wash foot again frantically in shower for about 20 mins, wash out bth again......

Finally made it to work about 2 hours late, still feeling really ill

3missyshohoho · 24/11/2007 16:46

Goodness there is a lot of slug infested MN houses out there!
