Where do you keep your microwave?

We are moving to a new build soon, and won't have much worktop space. Does anybody keep there microwave in a cupboard? or would it be unsafe to do this. I also think they take up a lot of space, and am hoping for ideas of where it would be best placed. I think it will look unsightly too, with our new kitchen.

OP posts:

Always kept mine on the surface of my kitchens. Seems odd to take up cupboard space for it.
Not sure about the safety - some microwaves are built in, aren't they?

Veronika13 · 16/05/2021 23:53

We don't have one.
They're not good for me as they kill nutrients. They were even banned in Russia in 1970s.

We use oven and the stove.
Store spices where the microwave was supposed to go.

DramaAlpaca · 16/05/2021 23:56

Mine is on the kitchen top, tucked away in the corner.

OP, do you have the space for a built in one?

Actually this isn't true - microwave lbs weren't banned in Russia:

As to the OP our new build came with a microwave fitted into the kitchen above the oven. In the past we've had it on the counter.

APurpleSquirrel · 16/05/2021 23:58

Ovens not lbs!

JessieOh · 17/05/2021 00:01

Utility room?

2004bestyear · 17/05/2021 00:03

Mine sits on top of my fridge

Figmentofimagination · 17/05/2021 00:06

Some microwaves come with warnings that they can't be used in enclosed spaces like cupboards. Just bought a new microwave and it had a warning in the instructions about it.

starrynight21 · 17/05/2021 00:08

My kitchen has a fitted space for it above the oven.

PickAChew · 17/05/2021 00:09

They need ventilation to function properly - ours has air vents down one side that can't be obstructed.

RainingZen · 17/05/2021 00:54

My brother has his microwave in a large cupboard, it has a venting space round it and the door stays ajar when they use it. Has been fine for 12 years like that.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 17/05/2021 00:56

Mines on top of the dishwasher.

Goldendinoroar · 17/05/2021 16:35

Ours is in a wall cabinet hidden away as I really didn’t want one at all

It doesn’t get used much

If I had to have one out on the counter I just wouldn’t have one

I wouldn’t miss it

Squaretoe · 17/05/2021 16:45

We just got rid of ours, we moved recently and there wasn’t really a place for it so we tried to not use it. Haven’t really missed it so it’s gone! Do you need one?

jaundicedoutlook · 17/05/2021 17:47

Keep it in the utility room. Only really used for defrosting and reheating frozen surplus rice.

Chasingsquirrels · 17/05/2021 19:48

Mine is in a cupboard since my kitchen refit. Used to be on counter top.

Where do you keep your microwave?
Anjo2011 · 18/05/2021 12:30

Used to sit on the work top taking up far too much room. Moved it to the utility , then had a new kitchen and ditched it totally. Toaster lives in the cupboard and gets taken out a couple of times a week. So much better without it/them. More room and easier to clean. Consider how much you actually use it and could you use hob/oven instead.

FinallyFluid · 18/05/2021 12:33

Ours is in the larder, we only use it to reheat coffee and defrost bacon if we have forgotten to take it out of the freezer.

Very occasionally we have baked potatoes, I start them off in the microwave, tried to do them the grown up way last week, the skin remained soft.

AnnaMagnani · 18/05/2021 12:38

On top of the fridge freezer.

neverenoughchelseaboots · 18/05/2021 12:42

In a cupboard that has empty counter space above so easy to lift out to use without too much hassle.

Yes, we could leave it on the counter in that same space but like the neatness of putting it away as we use it infrequently.

Caspianberg · 19/05/2021 14:33

In pantry which is separate small cupboard in hallway. We only really use for defrosting or warming odd thing occasionally, so it’s not really needed in kitchen.
It has a gap around all sides for ventilation and when in use the cupboard door is open anyway

Filterlea · 19/05/2021 20:36

We keep it in a cupboard with a lift up door on it.

Like this www.pws.co.uk/product/kmhs

keeps it nicely out of sight when not in use, and enough space around the microwave for ventilation.

NotMeNoNo · 19/05/2021 20:41

On the worktop on the end of a run.

You can get wall brackets for them if you have a suitable space.

picturesandpickles · 19/05/2021 20:42

Mine is in the loft these days as I only ever used it for porridge!

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 19/05/2021 20:43

On the side, in the utility.
