Does everyone have an 'odd-sock' bag?

Mine currently has over 100 socks in it Once in a while I tackle it, and reduce by about 50%. I only pair socks if they come off the washing line as a pair (rare). If only one sock of the pair is there, they go in the bag, hopefully to be reunited at some point. Where am I going wrong?

Black socks are the worst - boring and hard to pair up. Should chuck the lot and buy 20 new pairs of the same socks really. Love doing kids patterned socks - easy work!

I have a carrier bag hung on the back of a door and have the same system as you.
I have noticed that there are the same 'odds' left over all the time now though.Time for the bin.

I used to have a BIG bag of odd socks - would spend far too long sorting through.
Then i threw them away and bought all black ones......which all faded and shrunk to different degrees therefor none matched- so I threw them away.
Now, I have mainly patterned (of some kind) they are allowed one week in the odd sock corner - then it's the bin.
Life's too short (as is my attention span)

I do because my mother did. DP thinks we're both freaks.

We have a sock basket and all week as socks are washed and dried they are put into it, then on a Sunday evening it is tipped out on the floor in the lounge and we all find our own socks and pair them up.
We came to this ritual due to the fact I could never work out whose socks belong to whom esp as dh, ds1 and ds2 all have white sports socks and footie socks.

I have a theory that when you die and go to heaven/hell/purgatory you are given a bag of odd socks that have accumulated over your lifetime that you spend the rest of eternity pairing up.

TheApprentice · 02/11/2007 08:43

My Dh goes to Tesco or the like every 3 to 4 years and buys lots of pairs of indentical black socks! Apart from walking socks they are the only ones he ever wears so we don't ever pair up, they all just go into his sock drawer loose and they ALWAYS match!

laura032004 · 02/11/2007 08:53

Maybe that's the key then - no black socks, only patterned! I always buy 10 or so pairs at the same time, but as you say over time they change, so the 20 or so socks, all end up different.

DH is not too bad - he's in the Navy, so buys horrible regulation black nylon socks. They end up different lengths depending on number of times tumble dried, but I just pair them anyway.

DS's still small so they don't get mixed up with DH...yet. I am struggling to keep a track between DS1 & 2 though.

6LM's - ooh, just a week! We'd have none left if they were only allowed that amount of time to find their pair!

I just put them in the correct drawer, then next time I do it, I pair up what I can. I don't have many though. How can you have that many unpaired socks?!!?

lomond · 02/11/2007 08:59

Mine linger at the bottom of the ironing basket, I have some there that must have been there a year Every time I get to the bottom of the basket I try and match them up but there are always odd ones!

Where do they all go

onlyjoking9329 · 02/11/2007 09:01

my odd sock bag is so large i am considering seeking planning permission

Budabeastie · 02/11/2007 09:04

I never have odd socks - mine seem to like to stay together! DS's I just put in his drawer anyway and then put the match in when I find it. DH has a few. He wears black socks for work and I bought him the ones with coloured toes and heels and they seem to stay together all right.

I never have odd socks either - easy because there are only three of us, I suppose.

But I did lose all my knickers once when I lived in a student house - one day they were on a drying rack, the next day - poof! gone.

ExplosiveScienceT · 02/11/2007 09:19

I've got two laundry baskets and an Ikea bag

fullmoonfiend · 02/11/2007 09:21

yes...how long is one expected to hang to to them in the vain hope that each sock will be reunited with it's missing sibling?
I am too anal to pair up odd socks

laura032004 · 02/11/2007 09:22

DS1 objects if I put him in odd socks though! Even if they are kind of a pair (e.g. both Brum socks, just different coloured heel/toe) - fussy boy!

I have a few favourite socks that are approaching the several year mark in the odd sock bag. Holding out in hope though!

I never get odd socks either, I am far too efficient I think. The only ocasional time I get them is when a pair gets split into seperate washes and one has to sit there waiting for their twin to dry and be reunited

I make dh buy These socks so pairing up is a doddle, it's mine that cause the problem.

Tortington · 02/11/2007 10:08

buy black socks all the time - no need for odd sock bag

laura032004 · 02/11/2007 10:26

Custardo - black socks are my biggest problem! If they're not an exact pair, I can't wear them!

They don't do days of the week socks for women do they?

Black socks seem to fade at different rates, even the same pair.
