Festive Fledglings Flap Frantically Towards A Calm, Clutter-free Christmas!

SingToTheSky · 30/11/2020 22:59

OK so clutter-free is a bit ambitious. But anyway, all welcome to join us for a jolly holiday thread, in which we very loosely follow (or at least half-heartedly mention now and then) the FlyLady system of housekeeping.

I’ll be posting links and reminding us all of various tasks up until Christmas Eve, for those who want to follow the system - and if it’s like previous years there will also be some specific extra missions to help us prepare our homes for Christmas. However, we really are just a bunch of frazzled Mumsnetters who will be very happy to welcome you along for chat whether you follow the system or not! We discuss housework, sure, but a whole lot of other stuff too.

We will also continue with the Keep Calm Corner, in which you’ll find various diverting questions, memes etc.

And finally a huge thank you to Foxes who did a fab job of running the thread for the first time in November! 💐

why am I so useless at cooking rice?

Oh and DD1 is ok thanks foxes she’d pulled something in dance/PE it turned out. She just did all the washing up and they’ve brought the bins back round.

Yet more back and forth discussion about plans for next two years. There are options but I’m not sure any would be ideal 🤦🏽‍♀️

I was totally wiped out for a day after my flu jab sing tired, achey, headache, felt a bit sick. I was fine the next day. Dh didn't have any issues though!

HillsBesideTheSea · 09/12/2020 19:43

Yes, adults can get sniffly and tired after the flu jab. I always feel more tired for a few days after.

I used the cooker. I didn't burn anything but i did swear at it Bacon sandwiches in part baked bread for tea. So nothing complicated. Learning a new cooker is always soooo much fun HmmGrin but it works! I have a working cooker! and it won't fail to even make pasta! Hmm it has been nearly a year since I had a proper working cooker. So if it didn't seem so bad cos new I wouldn't believe it wasnt a dream

foxessocks · 09/12/2020 19:45

sing for rice I do one cup of rice to two cups of water (as in normal mug size cups!) And then simmer until the water has all absorbed. Lots of people say you should just put a lid on and leave rice , don't stir at all, but mine always seems to stick to the bottom of the pan so I stir mine a bit to get it off the bottom. Seems to work for me... although experts may say my rice isn't perfect, it tastes ok to me! What's happening to your rice exactly?

Glad your dd is okay!

foxessocks · 09/12/2020 19:47

Bacon sandwiches sounds so good hills! Hope the cooker is nice and simple to learn!

THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 09/12/2020 20:21

Rice. Just buy the boil in the bag stuff Grin

Still feeling crap

Not eating great no tbh but am trying more

Now have another isolating child 🙄

Bowerbird5 · 09/12/2020 21:32

That oh dear. Not good. Have you had a test? Sorry you are feeling awful. Maybe a multi vit. Could just be winter blues.

zoo I think I would tell them you are going to cancel Christmas next time they say no to helping.

Glittery I have never heard that expression before.

Hills great you have the new cooker give you time to get used to it before Christmas.
Sing excellent news about being dry and sleeping in own bed.
Rice- do you rinse it first. Could be type of rice. Although a bit more than expensive Basmati is easier to cook. You could try eBay for a Tupperware rice thing. It was grey lid off white base with a inner drainer sieve. I think they were in the 80’s.

Sherin get your feet up when watching Gruffulo etc need to watch your blood pressure now.

Woolly forgotten what I was going to say to you now.

Up looks like a fun time.

Bowerbird5 · 09/12/2020 21:58

Ah Woolly what a awful time.
Can you have a relaxing bath or shower? Early to bed with a book.

I tidied up my little stack next to my place on sofa yesterday. Today I wanted to finish cards so they were all done. Could I find the list or the cards I had done. Eventually gave up looking started writing some more and remembered some I had done. Tonight sat down after tea and suddenly thought red book(almost journal that I started but stopped doing last year) and pop into my head remembered where I had put it. She is right have a case -when I went to meeting I handed in my laptop and the lapbag was mine so I put stuff in there That is important.

Bowerbird5 · 09/12/2020 22:15

Ta Das

Looking for cards and list...wasted a lot of time
DH got stuff out of the loft. Hung door wreaths.
Stacked boxes.
Had sandwich for lunch.
Made chicken soup made scones.
Wrote cards for church. Only have about four others to do. Need to find a lovely card, a funny card and a holy card. A birthday card for nephew.

Went to window reveal.
Washed up some stuff as soup warmed through.
Ate soup and scone DH had cheese scones.
Dried up.
Cleaned candlesticks.
Relax.

Tomorrow put tree up.
Sort BRC in dining room and find homes for stuff.
Hot spot table.
Cleaned window and sill. Dust clock.Consider curtains from DS2 house to go in here or leave. At the moment there is no curtain. The window is right next to the wall on one side. It has material and lights wrapped around pole and vintage lamp, telescope and dried roses on the sill.

HillsBesideTheSea · 09/12/2020 22:26

Ah i meant to ask, how are the hens coping with the inside order for poultry due to bird flu bower?

SingToTheSky · 09/12/2020 22:32

Cagletini in her own bed again but she was super stroppy all evening (bit coldy) so she fell asleep with me first.

Kept asking for a “monster monkey book” apparently the monkey is blue and none of us have a clue what she’s on about. It doesn’t sound like anything we’ve got, but she swears it’s at home not nursery. Read several other books to keep her happy Hmm

ta da
🟣phoned nursery to let them know Cagletini had a cold
🟣home ed
🟣went to meet up
🟣tesco for lunch/dinner things
🟣booked Friday meet up
🟣sent bank details to pupil’s mum, need to update my records
🟣made dinner
🟣got Caglets doing a few chores
🟣bathed Cagletini

Errr think that’s it. Shattered so it’s bedtime, night fledglings!

sing this is a long shot and almost certainly not, but has Cagletini conflated "No More Kissing!" and "I love you, Blue Kangaroo!" by Emma Chichester Clark? They're both lovely books and have similar style illustrations (obviously) and Bobo the monkey from NMK was the first thing I thought of when I read your post.

S1 has had a positive test Shock, as have two or three others of the household. (He's not terribly unwell, just mild symptoms.) Of course this means that all nine of them have to quarantine for the next ten to fourteen days.

With nine of the sixteen choral scholars unable to leave the house, they're not going to be able to record the tv broadcasts next weekend...

Apparently they already have enough to edit something together, including for the NL&C if necessary. And they're currently looking at doing something with just the boys too.

But it's a bit annoying that the only reason he's still there is because of these broadcasts which now may not even happen (and I hope he gets a definitive answer about Christmas Eve in time to change his train ticket).

No flying. Some gym but I have done something to my shoulder (Steve promised to ignore press-ups on Friday and concentrate on legs and core instead. Oh lovely). Have rather more presents organised than this time last week.

isawthat · 10/12/2020 01:40

Hello any room for a newbie? We had DC3 in August and since then my house has become a bomb site!. I really need to get it back together

Bowerbird5 · 10/12/2020 02:58

Hills they are still out because all of the pen is covered over with netting. I haven’t seen any wild birds in there so hope it is adequate. If not they will have to stay in the

Tinselette · 10/12/2020 05:14

isawthat - always room for a newbie! Welcome!

Tinselette · 10/12/2020 05:16

Oh Merry I'm sorry to hear that about ds1. I hope he's better soon.. Must be lovely to be able to sing. I have a very untuneful voice.

Tinselette · 10/12/2020 05:19

I'm sorry sing but Cagletini makes me laugh so much. I hope she's feeling better. I love her strops - I can just see her insisting on the book. I can remember D's screeching 'no yellow juice on pink fish!!' as if I was squeezing poison on it.

Tinselette · 10/12/2020 05:21

Bitterly cold here this morning. DH has a rotten cold too so I'm insisting he stays on bed this morning. He can catch up on work later.

ExpensivelyDecorated · 10/12/2020 06:47

Morning all, just about to drag myself out of bed, I've got a 7.20 appt for my first ever flu jab. Will report back later.

Tinselette · 10/12/2020 07:05

Gosh that's early ED. Jab's not so bad. I'm up and wired on strong coffee 😜 kitchen is apocalyptic, no ironing done, everything everyway upstairs. One room completely clean and still airing. Can't wait to get house back in order.

Stilllivinginazoo · 10/12/2020 07:11

e.p good luck(and wow that's early)
Hills hurrah for working cookers!
Sing doesn't sound like any book I now, preschoolers are funny creatures!

Tinselette · 10/12/2020 07:17

Teens rarely see the long-term picture - it's the way their brains are at right now

THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 10/12/2020 07:20

I would reschedule too zoo i am sorry you are struggling so Sad

I haven't had a test as i don't have main covid symptoms, awaiting test results for ds1 at request of school although i pretty sure he is fine
