First of all, a big thank you to SingToTheSky for leading us through the August thread, (you can park your mop and hang up your duster now)

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here . Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

Also I want pineapple upside down cake.

Mc3209 · 22/09/2020 21:31

Sing I was drooling over those too. Even contemplated making it at some point... maybe this weekend.

🎉Morning routine
🎉Evening routine
🎉Cooked dinner. Usually DH cooks, but today I thought I would contribute 😬 Nothing fancy, just one of those all in one tray bake type of things - sticky potatoes and sausage bake.

Would have liked to have watched Bake-Off but will have to catch up. A bit disappointed that they have replaced a female presenter with a male one, also I really like Sandi.

🦔told DH what work DS had to do
🦔put dryer on
🦔yoga
🦔read my journal and therapy diary to prepare for tomorrow’s zoom session (first in over 3 months)
🦔had a lot of rest. Flare up was a Thing today

Bowerbird5 · 23/09/2020 00:06

It was good but I missed Sandi.
I really think they shouldn’t send anyone home the first week.

I am really stressed, like having panic attack. DH won’t let me talk about it. Paperwork hasn’t arrived and I have another meeting this week. I just want to end it now. This is not doing me any good. I need to see my GP but they are not seeing anyone at the moment. I might ring tomorrow and ask for a phone call. Sorry I just need to breathe. God it must be so horrible for your teens Zoo. To feel like this and be a teen. I used to really push myself out of my comfort zone when I was a teen.

Bake off was a good distraction for a while.

I maybe did too much today. I went shopping with DH. We went to the large butchers and bought some fish( I know) vegetables and meat. A bit of cheese too. They had the window open on the side serving the teenagers from local schools- comp and grammar. No police today. The last few times we have gone several police were parked up chatting then buying lunch. DH is annoying he touched some meat then put it back. I keep telling him not to touch it unless buying. It is like going with a toddler. In fact I could take DS3 into a China shop and tell him not to touch and he never did.
We then went to the supermarket thatSC likes. I sussed it out and then went in. You were allowed in twos this week, trolleys are wiped before being given to you. Hand gel available. So we have stocked the cupboards, fridge and freezer in case we are next for lockdown. Scotland is above us and Northumbria is now in lockdown and part of Cumbria so I think we will be next.
We bought shavings for the hens too. They were excited to see me yesterday. I am painting their coop.
So I have been in two shops today. It was ok apart from someone getting right next to me when we were picking pasta. Why couldn’t she bloody wait! I was doing really well until then. I have Dairy free ice cream in the freezer.mmmm.
No flying done as it took ages to wipe all the shopping. I made my bed but that was it. I let DH wash up. We had pizza. I had mine at 6:30 and he had his about 8. Oh I did do 3x LOL from our break. We had to take sheets and towels.
SC we were right under the Old Man. We walked to Coppermines which was interesting. We had two curries. One in at 5:30.no one else in until we were nearly finished and a take away on the last night. We had scampi and chips on Friday from the pub nearby as a take away. It was too cold to sit outside. The fish shop was closed as SI. It is the first time I have been down there and not done anything. It was lovely weather. Boast of vitamin D before winter. I still haven’t had my letter about flu jab. I will try to catch up with reading your posts tomorrow.

MrsTidyHouse · 23/09/2020 00:09

Reading all the lovely posts before going to bed. Must remember to come here every day, to recharge my batteries and not become isolated. Relieved that the restrictioons relevant to our family are clear, even though we wish it could have been different. When I did the school pick-up, LOs heard the last couple of minutes of NS, and were so mature and at the same time so sweet that I just about burst with pride and love. Then LG climbed the tree for chestnuts and LB climbed in the garden tree for only about the third or fourth time in his life. I Couldn't get the back door open quick enough, so he peed in a bucket. Ah well...

The house must be getting better all the time by invisible increments. This evening they paused the tv with no arguments when I said we all had to tidy, and we each got on with a specific part of clearing up - dishes to kitchen, toys off floor, etc. It took about twenty minutes altogether, with clear direction from me and no complaints from them. Then a wee bit more tv, story, bedtime routine, songs, lights out. It was a good evening.

I see that Flylady has after-school routine on the list. This is an area I need ro pay attention to, particularly wrt food. They tend to graze, albeit very healthily. But I want them to eat in the kitchen to keep any mess under control. That might be a sticking point. Time will tell.

SingToTheSky · 23/09/2020 00:41

Bower hope you get some sleep. Panic is horrible! Hugs xxx

Dancingtomusic · 23/09/2020 02:51

Bower- its awful getting panic attacks. Sending you a huge hug.

HungryHazelEyes · 23/09/2020 02:53

bower good to see you back on here. Sorry to hear you're so stressed. You can always vent on here, we'll listen 💐
Tidy it really does sound like you've had a breakthrough! It's so much easier when everyone is on the same page.

Sing I hope you're feeling better tomorrow after some rest.

wellies keto peanut butter cookies sound delicious! Can you please share the recipe?

I've had a very productive day today, although I was looking forward to sitting and watching TV at some point, it hasn't happened yet.

Ta Das:
🌻 ALL the laundry! Including bedding on all 3 beds, 8 loads total
🌻 Blood test done at the fair, no fun involved, but thanks zoo 😍
🌻 Rotated DW

🌻 vacuumed floor in whole house
🌻 Mopped floor
🌻 Dusted the whole house (just a quick job)
🌻 Cleaned bathroom (DH noticed!)
🌻 Took DS to football game and his team won 3-0
🌻 Bought flowers then rearranged when at home (pic attached)
🌻 Finished a wooden tray I've had in the cupboard for about 5 years to gift to ILs. I dry brushes it (attached pic of that too)
🌻 Skyped mum
🌻 Had guy look at our water softener, no problems, yay!

I need to eat now (just leftovers) and handwash dishes that don't go in the DW.

Sorry there's no more personals, I'm sure I was going to reply to someone else too, so I'm sorry.

🍒👋 to everyone.

Good morning! Sorry you are struggling bower Sad

I didn't watch bake off, I liked Sandi and I'm not sure I would like it without her (but then I did also say that about Mel and Sue and Mary Berry!) I'm also watching Lucifer with dh at the moment and it's so amazingly cheesy and ridiculous that it's just what we need right now!

My day off today but I have an appointment later and really need to do some work even though it's my day off

Got home from the school and nursery run at 9.15 and did a power nearly hour...
Ta das
Mopped kitchen
Dishwasher unloaded and back on
Washing hung up and another load on
Took heaps of toys upstairs to the correct bedrooms
Tidied living room
Wiped kitchen sides
Tidied kids bedrooms
Tidied our bedroom
Got gammon steaks out of freezer for dinner

Stopping for a coffee and a piece of beetroot brownie which is surprisingly nice (I don't usually like beetroot but there's a lot of chocolate covering the taste 😂)

I suppose I could give bake off a go while I have my coffee 🤔

SingToTheSky · 23/09/2020 12:10

I’m sitting listening to Kpop and writing what I can remember of the session so I can write it up properly later. It overran, she is so lovely. I have some challenges before next time (no idea when that is yet).

I also did a Scary Thing of sending a drawing off to an autism charity so they can put it in their window along with other art by autistic people. Argh. Convinced they’ll hate it, obv. 🙄

Right, time to reheat yesterday’s Chinese leftovers and watch a couple of episodes of Modern Family (it’s not as funny as The Middle, but it is funny!) to fully chill out before the others get back!

SingToTheSky · 23/09/2020 12:11

Oh scratch that they’ve just got back already, must have skipped the park due to the weather. Damn.

SingToTheSky · 23/09/2020 14:30

Well, Cagletini screamed and kicked with rage because they hadn’t gone to the park. Eventually fell asleep on the floor, DH moved her to the sofa where she woke up and cried more until finally dozing back off! I did manage to watch a single episode Hmm and get more planning and home ed done with DS, but have that nagging anxious “I should be doing stuff” feeling and can’t relax Hmm. Just watching a brief documentary about Pompeii and then I’m going to write up my notes properly from therapy I think. I have homework which is a bit challenging and scary (that is the idea though) but I’m not thinking about that just yet.

AlexTheLittleCat · 23/09/2020 15:22

Hope everyone is ok. Zoo CAMHS sound like a nightmare and they aren't listening at all. You have valid reasons and it's not an excuse. Sorry they are so useless. You get a lower level of that with some health visitors etc, they don't always listen.

Bower Sorry about the panic attacks.

I've been finishing more DIY and no flying recently, need to get everything done before the weather turns.
