First of all, a big thank you to SingToTheSky for leading us through the August thread, (you can park your mop and hang up your duster now)

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here . Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

Love the autumn decs!

Think I’m getting the usual hormone headache. I’ve had zero willpower against carbs today though so that hasn’t helped.

Felt oddly motivated with housework so did a bit of laundry, but haven’t planned the week ahead at all and both Caglets have a bit of homework to do tonight. Mostly stuff DH can help with instead of me though!

Chocolate Cake Biscuit Chocolate Cake Biscuit

Links for Monday 21st September

We move into the master bedroom, aka The Boudoir

Spend 15 minutes decluttering here before moving onto detailed cleaning.

Our missions for Friday are to spend 15 minutes chucking out rubbish and unwanted items

Baby step 21 is to ask flylady a question Better yet, ask one of us fledglings for a more sensible answer…

Habit of the month is Before Bed Routine

Monday focus is the beloved [snort] home bleugh Essentially spending 10 minutes each on seven key areas of housework

to you all, I have not caught up on the thread yet - making slow progress, but I do have flying to report:

Ta Da
Managed a LOL everyday this week
All but one load folded and put away
Kept on top of washing up mostly
Did some weeding yesterday in the back garden - looks much nicer now
Chicken chores - including putting one into 'broody jail' - her mothering instincts are uber-strong...
Thorough clean of all kitchen appliances using 'Elbow Grease' from Aldi
EPIC sort out of DS bedroom - my 'Other Room'

  • Completely emptied out all his clothes
  • Sorted sizes - I have a whole black sack full to give to a colleague at work tomorrow for her DS
  • Labelled last bits of new uniform
  • Refolded Kondo-style all wearable clothes and organised into drawers
  • mucked out under his bed
  • Dusted everything - all furniture, ceiling cobwebs, skirting boards, blinds, pictures, shelves
  • Thorough hoover
  • Put all books back into book box

And despite horrendous week at work, I have managed to keep 100% on plan for Slimming World, including keeping up with C25K.

Hope you're all well.

I'm fine thanks guys,no stiffnessjust bit stiff hip old age

Been bit tough weekend with zoolets
Dd1 came and cut my hair today, which has boosted me up a bit.almost waist length to shoulder length!not sure I can scrape it up into the bun I do all day every day anymore!!
Still not had tea yet...kids in process of showers etc

SingToTheSky · 20/09/2020 22:56

Not caught up here either! Don’t worry mog - you are doing a great job with leading the thread and with such a busy job! Amazing to stay on the eating and exercise plans too - food is the first thing to go out the window (or rather, indiscriminately down my throat) when stressed/busy/distracted.

ta da
☑️brain training apps
☑️sorted my/DD1’s meds for the week
☑️helped DD1 with maths homework
☑️replied to SENCO email
☑️replied to LEA HE advisor email
☑️got DD1 to do some chores
☑️replied to work advisor email
☑️read about 20 books to Cagletini in a row
☑️put aside some outgrown books to pass on
☑️sorted some clean laundry
☑️LOL x2, first went in dryer
☑️found some books for DS to do his homework
☑️read to DS
☑️small amount of exercise when watching YouTube
☑️gathered rubbish
☑️found out about bank account for DD1 and now trying to explain it to her

ta didn’t
❌any home ed planning
❌any studying
❌explain how DS’ folder is going to work, so I now need to replace some bits, it’s just the cheap divider things but it brings home again how much the Caglets don’t understand without VERY clear instructions, as this sort of thing happens so often, and I feel like I mess up with not explaining

I feel really unmotivated and crap but I know it’s mostly hormonal so I think I’ll have something to eat (later than I should but oh well) and sleeeep but currently talking to DD1 instead

Mc3209 · 20/09/2020 23:04

Sing you've accomplished a lot today. I hope tomorrow you will feel a bit better 💐

Zoo oh that's quite a chop! How does it feel? I always feel like I am opening a new chapter when I get my hair cut.

Ta da for today:
🎉 Aquarium maintenance X3.
🎉LOL X2
🎉Usual morning and evening routines
🎉DW rotated and then put on maintenance cycle.
🎉Indoor plants watered. Didn't get to tidying up front and back gardens today.. I shall do it at some point.

🍒🍒🍒👋👋👋 to everyone!

SingToTheSky · 20/09/2020 23:36

Thanks mc DD1 is still awake but busy making a scythe for her little ghost nightlight (Halloween decoration she bought in Poundland) 😂

She’s wanting to experiment with her style now. This is new ground for me! She has mostly been living in skinny jeans/jeggings and hoodies with fandom t-shirts. Where does one buy skater skirts?!

To do tomorrow:
🔘decide what the fuck we are doing all week

So much other stuff but really that is the priority, I’m feeling mega overwhelmed by the thought of that, strangely, let alone anything else.

Now I need to stick my finger in a mug of warm salt water as it’s gone weird (splinter possibly?!)

HungryHazelEyes · 21/09/2020 04:54

Mog you are doing a Stella job with everything, I really appreciate the effort with the links and a brief description, even if I'm usually a week behind. I don't know why though, but I can usually catch up on master bedroom week.

zoo that's a lot of hair! How does it feel? My hair has never been that long but the best thing I did was chop it all off 🤣 I now have an a line, with the back shaved.

Sing it looks like new look has skater skirts (that's where I shopped as a teenager). I hope your finger feels better soon.

orange I love your hedgehogs and owl! I never see anything hedgehog related here and I've always loved them.

mc you have 3 aquariums?! It was enough work just having one! What do you keep in yours?

Ta Das Sunday:
🦊 skyped mum
🦊 shopped at Costco
🦊 pruned my lilac bush
🦊 swept outside
🦊 cleaned outside of grill
🦊 wiped down table and benches outside so we could eat dinner out there

DH and DS mowed and strimmed the garden, it looks so neat and tidy out there. I'm not sure how many more times we will have to mow, can't be that much more.

Tonight I got to play with DDs hamster 🐹. He looks so skinny outside of his cage! But DD reassured me he eats, and he always has food available. He was so fast that I hope he never escapes from his cage or ball.

DH and DS also helped to move the logs from the guide pine tree that fell in my ILs back yard. If course DH got sap all over his shorts 🤦‍♀️ I've sprayed them with a stain remover , but not sure if that'll work 🤞
It felt like a good weekend, although they are never long enough.

THATbasicrebelBITCH · 21/09/2020 06:58

It came to me cranachan

SingToTheSky · 21/09/2020 09:20

Morning all. I was wired last night so didn’t sleep until 2 but thankfully slept in and only properly woke up when Cagletini came in for a quick cuddle and a reading of But Not The Hippopotamus before leaving for nursery. She was actually talking happily about going (“What are you going to play with today?” “Snack! And toy elephants!” 😂) so even if she is getting upset at the door right now, that’s a huge improvement from crying at the mere mention of it!

Plenty I need to get on with today but my main priority is to sit down and do the plan for the home ed week - it’s not too bad really as I add stuff as and when, eg I already wrote the chemistry pages in and I think we already have person of the week sorted for the next fortnight as it ties in with his weekly read aloud thing, etc.

Anyway a to do list:
🔲weigh self
🔲meds, water and breakfast
🔲plan home ed for the week
🔲read rest of Hamlet story to DS
🔲sort out folder/homework where he wrote it in the wrong bit
🔲commence proper home ed
🔲plan paired learning for the week
🔲shower and dressed
🔲put towel wash in dryer
🔲new LOL
🔲get transfer from DH and pay for therapy
🔲book a few more weeks of dancing and set alarm to pay tomorrow
🔲look at new look website (thank you hazel! 💐)
🔲reply to Senco
🔲email maths teacher(s)

That’s plenty to get on with Hmm must actually move now!

foxessocks · 21/09/2020 09:59

Morning, I fell off the thread!

Working all day today but have managed to make chicken stock from yesterday's roast and got the kids off to school and nursery on time with correct packed lunches and snacks, this is an achievement!

Must get back to work now hope everyone is okay

Stilllivinginazoo · 21/09/2020 10:19

I've given up try get dd2 do anything she's an overwhelmed mess and even just getting into school is all I ask if her for now

She's texting me having waves anxiety and very hot.stuck next to friends who's friends sister has confirmed case,so she's getting upset about that too
I am picking her up 1045 as lesson ends and she's out school during study periods because they try limit numbers and potential bubble breaking
One her friend group has cough and temp but as snotty mum saying go school, can't be covid...

I hear Chris whitty doing TV announcement at 11.wtf time is that for it?!I need be out pick up DD as she can't manage being out by herself then, many are at work

DS is busy doing oak learning- tackling English at mo

foxessocks · 21/09/2020 10:34

zoo can't believe people are sending kids in with a temperature and cough, I mean wtf?!?

Your list is great 👍

I've started work and also hung out the washing despite it being nowhere near as nice weather as I thought it was going to be 🤔 . Made myself a posh coffee and must get back on with work now...

Didn't know there was going to be an announcement, not sure I've got the strength for that!

SingToTheSky · 21/09/2020 11:02

DH has it on his phone now so I’ll overhear it. I’m quite nervous as it is a different format with no questions... why?!

Ugh at the people ignoring rules.

Planning going well and DS has done some work. Had to put yesterday’s drying back on so I am behind with the other stuff.

TooStressyTooMessy · 21/09/2020 12:11

Hi everyone.

I am alone in the house today! Both kids are in school. I am working the next few days and realistically will not get everything done today but am catching up on laundry and am now going to look through the calendar to figure out what is going on Grin. Just watched the briefing. Would rather be kept up to date so am personally glad they did it. What we all really want is a crystal ball though and nobody has that Sad. And of course a cure!

Big wing flaps to everyone and welcome to any new people I have missed.

SingToTheSky · 21/09/2020 12:17

Ooh alone time stressy enjoy!
Our plans have changed as friend can’t come over today to learn with DS (not self isolating related thankfully so we can rearrange) so we shall try and get more of the regular stuff done today instead. Thankfully I wasn’t ready to print the all holy plan yet anyway!

I have done a few bits from my list.

SingToTheSky · 21/09/2020 12:18

I feel a bit underwhelmed by the announcement although I didn’t follow all of it. The not knowing is horrible isn’t it.

Dancingtomusic · 21/09/2020 12:21

Cherry waves to everyone,

Too stressy- enjoy the free house!

Sing- i hope DH nerve operation goes ok.
Good to hear your little one is happy going to nursery.

Zoo- wow your hair chop sounds amazing. You can now wash and go!

That- you definately deserve a inset day!

Foxes- waves, wow you have done loads already. Lunches too!

Up- have a lovely time at the large playpark if you go with your DD.

I am going to ignore my midden of a house and make a fabric facemask. if i can unpack my sewing machine from its box.

foxessocks · 21/09/2020 13:45

Enjoy your day alone toostressy Smile

I wasn't sure what to make of the announcement really, yes I think nobody really knows and the uncertainty is the main concern.

Other than working my ta das are
Dishwasher emptied and back on
Chicken stock measured out and labelled for the freezer
Ordered myself a new face mask and my other ones don't fit properly

Work is not going well today, all I've done is try to sort of queries and I haven't cleared any of my backlog of work at all 🤦‍♀️ I'm being chased by someone but can't actually give them what they want until the person I'm chasing responds to me, so that's normal office (except not in the actual office) life really 😂

It's very very frustrating!

I've got to pick the kids up very soon and then whizz ds up to dh office so he can take him for his hair cut as he finishes work earlier than me. I think I'll tell him to grab something quick and easy for dinner while he's out because somehow I don't think my veggie Bolognese is going to get done today ...

SingToTheSky · 21/09/2020 15:41

Who’s got the pointy stick? I’ve been mostly mindlessly scrolling FB for over an hour. Could’ve sworn I had my work coach phone call at 2, but it didn’t happen, and no reply to the text I then sent asking if I’d got it wrong. Not sure if I just got the wrong day or what.

Then DD1 got home saying she has to write a statement as her little shit of an ex hit her again. Hard enough that she’s still in pain now. Fucksake.

(As an aside, I note that “fucksake” has finally added itself to my phone’s dictionary.)
