First of all, a big thank you to SingToTheSky for leading us through the August thread, (you can park your mop and hang up your duster now)

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here . Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

SingToTheSky · 17/09/2020 20:54

Will miss you on the thread sc!

At least we had some clarification on a couple of clubs today - tap is delayed a few more weeks, and cadets (st john ambulance) is not starting back until after Christmas and is giving some distance learning stuff. It’s a shame but there are advantages due to less travel! And DD1 can keep doing a new dance club instead on Thursdays for the rest of this term.

DD1 had a much better day today, was telling me about all her classes, she got “aspire points“ too (including for things like asking for help), she’s far happier :) I’m so relieved!

merryhouse · 17/09/2020 21:08

H is watching some Nazi hunters drama. I think I preferred Stargirl.

SingToTheSky · 17/09/2020 21:18

I started watching modern family today :o

Hi everyone, just flying through to say my relative got a negative on the second test shortly after I posted yesterday, meaning we were released from isolation and I went into work in the afternoon.

Unfortunately that relief was short lived as we are included in the north east local lockdowns from midnight tonight 😭. I was really looking forward to catching up with my friends in the next few weeks, and I’m not happy at not being able to visit my sisters, parents and DGM again.

Felt a bit under the weather today (headache and tidied as I didn’t sleep well) but I’ve done an LOL and sorted the kitchen after dinner.

SC the thread will be here when things have calmed down a bit for you Flowers. I have cracked at the awkward silence many times and ended up volunteering myself for all sorts Grin

Zoo sorry CAMHS don’t get it, it must be so frustrating.

Foxes I don’t envy your school run. Think about how fit you’ll be soon though!

Sorry for the limited personals but I’m going to take my grumpy self off to bed. Night fledglings!

TooStressyTooMessy · 17/09/2020 21:36

Just clicked onto this thread so have only read your post Upholder Flowers. That is really shit to have just got out of isolation into a lockdown Wine.

Ta da for today:
🎉Hoovered upstairs and downstairs, mopped all moppable floors
🎉Usual dishwasher rotation. I should really run it on a maintenance cycle at some point soon, can't remember the last time I've done it.
🎉Indoor plants watered and fertilised. Moved the bonsai trees under a light lamp as windowsill no longer cuts it for light requirements.
🎉Cleaned out the cutlery drawer in the kitchen. I am amazed how murky it got, must really do that more often.
🎉Sorted out manicure and pedicure. Can't believe I am now putting what used to be pleasant self care things onto a to do list.. 🙄

🍒👋 to everyone!

Cross post! Wellies I am all raspberried out! It turned out pretty decent actually.
Your Ta Da lists are always scarily inspiring!

Glad to hear all those COVID tests are coming back negative. Sorry you are stuck in a lockdown Up.

I will need to go on a diet and exercise regimen of some sort once baby comes out.. my butt has a life of its own now. I miss my regular gym sessions and yoga classes. Will need to tap into online lessons once I am able to do something again.

Thanks for kind wishes Smile.

Oh no TheUpholder that's really crap about the further lockdown.

So sorry Lil'Zoo wasn't able to enjoy ballet after all Zoo very much hope she feels better tomorrow.

Wellies that errand list is epic!! Please go steady, I think you are the keystone propping up everyone in your household, far more than I am in mine tbh! (I just get dragged along in everyone's wake picking up discarded socks as I go Grin)

That's great dd1 enjoyed her day Sing

Merry that list is hilarious and spot on! Grin

Fulsome 🍒😷👋 and g'night to all xx

HungryHazelEyes · 18/09/2020 04:40

SC you will be missed on the thread, it's understandable though, for sure. You have to put yourself first and hopefully you'll be able to rejoin us again.
orange yes it was my ILs who lost a huge pine tree. It's all been cut up now, they are going to put a temporary fence up this weekend and will need help.
up sorry to hear that you're heading into another lockdown just as you're coming out of isolation.
Sing I'm glad to see that DD is happier at school again, that was a really tough time she went through, but sounds like she's much stronger now.
mc your cake looked delicious!
zoo I hope Lil zoo will feel better soon. Migraines are no fun at all. Take care of yourself as well though.
wellies that is a huge list, I'm sure that's exactly what fly lady is talking about too.

We have a wild fire near us, it's the mountain range where we camp (where we were last month) last I checked it was 35,000 acres and growing. It's so sad. It's scary as well, we're supposed to get a storm with lightening and wind, which will only make it spread more 😢 fire fighters have set up camp just down the street from us as we're only about an hour away drive time.

Anyway, DS had his first football ⚽️ game Tuesday night, I don't remember if I posted anything in the end, felt like I didn't get much done and time flew by. I did get all my ironing done though, and it was all stacked up. Last night dinner took me over 2 hours to get ready. I really could have done with some help, but DH gets pissed off if I ask him to help without him volunteering.
I'm starting to feel like the hired help and I hate it. I never get to sit down and relax while someone else cooks dinner for me, I'm always cooking. Unless FIL is cooking, but that's every other week, one meal, half the time I've been helping just lately too.

Sorry for the rant, not something I can really express in rl right now. I just have moments where I want to just get away, drive a couple hours away, not tell anyone, and get a hotel for the night, I'm just too responsible to do it. Ugh!
As you all were, 🍒👋 for everyone as I know I missed a few of you.

Stilllivinginazoo · 18/09/2020 05:37

hazel if you need the shovel to stove back DH head I happy to be your alibi .in your shoes I'd risk pissing him off and Have Words over how exhausted you are feeling.an hour from fires is scarily close it winds whip up

Thank you zoo he does help to clean up the kitchen, especially when I've made a big mess while cooking, I just wish it didn't all fall back on me. The other option is eating out and we can't afford to keep doing that.
Great start to your day too, and so early as usual!
I'm headed to bed, I hope you all have a great day

Stilllivinginazoo · 18/09/2020 07:37

Relocated dining table!!
This involves working out who is who of "stuff" dumped and getting respective owners sort it
Put away any food that just got wiped and dumped on there, ditto cleaning products
Clear off crisp bags,cups etc
Good scrub,rinse and wiped disinfectant

Try help dd2 (as requested)tackle box keeps under dining table chair all her meds and day to day bits.got told after 20 minutes it's still a mess.got firmly told to sort it herself then!!

For my next task it's clear clutter off dining table chairs, wipe down and sort under table
From there I can work across the room...
