First of all, a big thank you to SingToTheSky for leading us through the August thread, (you can park your mop and hang up your duster now)

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here . Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

Glad it’s Friday here too! Although one of the busy evenings now clubs are sort of back (scouts is still on zoom though).

Covid box is an excellent plan ed! I want to get a basket for the shelf by the door (known as the Phone Shelf as it has our landline and router) for masks but including other stuff is a great idea. I need to get more hand gel bottles to keep for clubs as for example taekwondo rules say they should take their own. What a strange new world huh?

I slept until half 8 as I hit stop on my alarm 😳 and was woken by Cagletini screaming again. She went in with less of a battle though.

Mc3209 · 11/09/2020 10:25

Ladies, I did something stupid and I need your creative advice on how to fix it.

So, it's our first wedding anniversary coming up in a month, and I decided to finally get a wedding album sorted. It arrived today... I got the YEAR WRONG on the front cover!! How is that even possible?! And 3 photos had edges cut off, not critical but looks amateurish (I need to check what I sent them re that, that could also be me..). I have under 1 month to get it fixed. And it took them 3 weeks to deliver the original.... HELP please!

Lisette1940 · 11/09/2020 10:38

Argh MC. I'm sure you're not the first to have the wrong year. I'd get in contact with the company about the cropped photos as a quality issue if it's them and see if they'll replace the whole thing. You could then ask for the date to be removed or amended from the cover.

Lisette1940 · 11/09/2020 10:39

We never look at our wedding album 🤣 life gets in the way

Cineraria · 11/09/2020 11:49

Oh no, Mc. I hope you can fix it, somehow. My dad did the same thing with my parents' wedding photos (he put the year he received it instead of the year they got married) and the family joke is that they had to wait a year to start a family as a result, given the attitudes of the day.

If it can't be fixed without too much expense, could you get just a nice print with the correct date and other cover information and have it applied to the front as if its meant to be done separately or would that look too awful?

Cineraria · 11/09/2020 12:48

I just remembered the word for "applied to the front as if its meant to be done separately": a dust cover. That was a rubbish description of one too! I think my coffee is faulty!

Mc3209 · 11/09/2020 13:16

Lisette Cin thank you. I can't believe I did that. I emailed the company for a quote to see how much it would cost to fix it.
Cin it's exactly what I did, I put 2020 instead of 2019... Gah. I like your idea of dust cover! This will be my plan B if it will cost too much to fix it via the company.

SingToTheSky · 11/09/2020 14:26

Home ed week 1 of 39 done 😅 went pretty well overall considering I wasn’t nearly as sorted as I hoped on Monday.

I collected Cagletini, again she settled fairly quickly. And she actually asked to go in the buggy partway as she was “so sleepy” 😅 so it’s going ok so far I think! Really need to sort all the clean laundry as suddenly she needs a lot more clothes each day (she’s still in the “would rather be naked” phase at home).

Just charging the iPad ready for DS’ autism support session. Then I definitely need a relaxing afternoon! Lots to do over the weekend:

⚠️Aforementioned laundry (not much actual washing to do, just putting it all away!)
⚠️Get Caglets to fill in their calendars while we update our diary
⚠️Get them to make a list of what is needed for each club on each day to put on their walls (suggestion by support worker)
⚠️Draw lines on whiteboard with sharpie to turn it into a weekly planner, and fill it in for next week
⚠️Check on DD1’s homework status with new google classroom codes etc, and make her do some
⚠️Plan at least the next week for home ed including deciding what to get DS and his bestie learning together for two sessions a week (I am super excited about this though as it will be great for both of them)
⚠️Decide if we are going on any trips this month and if I’m going to mum’s again
⚠️Work on (preferably finish) next assignment

Probably loads more TBH but that’s a good start Hmm

SingToTheSky · 11/09/2020 16:57

Hello all! Sorry I have been really terrible at posting on here and haven’t read any posts to catch up yet.

Have been AWOL as just trying to get through the days atm Grin. DD1’s school bubble burst so she has been home learning for the last week. Then DD2 got a cough so now we are all self isolating waiting for her Covid test results to come back. And tonight our oven has just broken and we can’t even get anyone in to fix it as self isolating! Have dug our a phone number though and am going to at least see if we can line someone up to come when we do not have to isolate any more. So it’s all good here GrinConfusedWineWineWine.

Cherry waves to everyone.

anorangeaday · 11/09/2020 18:39

I’ve managed to do an early post for once today. I’ve put on the highway rat for the DC so I’m able to have a little bit of down time. I’m so happy for the weekend, we are meant to be going to Weston tomorrow with the DC’s dad, we’ll see how that turns out!.

It’s beautiful isn’t it mc! I’m not sure what it is about Peppa that kids love so much, but it annoys me to no end! I hope you can sort the wedding book, the dust cover idea does sound good.

Thank you wellies, I’m glad DS3 got on good yesterday.

sing I’m glad to hear that homeschooling and nursery is going well. So annoying about the middle being taken off prime! We were actually trying to watch stick man but that’s been taken off as well!.

Argh toostressy!!! How frustrating!! Hope you manage to have some good microwave meals for now ...eek!

I'm dog sitting this weekend for my parents...they are quite naughty dogs too so just hoping they don't escape or eat something they shouldn't 😬😬

Lisette1940 · 11/09/2020 18:51

Puts giant chocolate buttons in naughty corner. Toostressy oh dear - self isolation and oven trouble. i hope friends and neighbours are leaving you with fresh supplies.

TooStressyTooMessy · 11/09/2020 18:57

Thanks guys! Thankfully we got an online shop today (before the oven broke) so we have food that can be microwaved or cooked on the hob. Also got a chicken to roast though so currently trying to figure out how to get it to fit in the freezer Confused. Fun Friday night here Grin.

Oh Sing, how irritating about The Middle.

Bowerbird5 · 11/09/2020 19:02

🤣
❤️11:30am brought yesterday’s washing in from the line. I remembered because I was going to the nurse for a smear and wanted to wear the ones I had pegged out. I might add that I asked DH if he had brought the washing in. No. I am fairly sure he washed and put out his walking gear. 🤬so no he hasn’t redeemed himself Wellies
🧡 went to counsellor this morning first face to face since February. Lovely, sensible woman. I just have one more session paid by school. I was expecting to have more news.
🤔went to chemist for my prescription. Not there I was out of tablets yesterday.
💛 made lunch. DP had naice ham and I had mmmm........peanut butter🙄cause it is Friday and I couldn’t be bothered making tuna and didn’t have time for eggs.
Attempted to take new neighbours their cake.4th time.

💚 changed from jeans to a skirt before I went to nurse. She was lovely and new to me.
💙back to pharmacy and this time it was done. GP surgery hadn’t sent it until this morning yet one pack was out last week just I had some 10mg left over so doubled those up for last five days. This is the third time it was late. I shall mention it next week. Last month they rang for me.
💜 Felt knackered from going to town twice in one day. Stressed when a woman and her daughter came into chemist. Only four allowed all marked out with tape and 2m measurement. I moved up she told child 8 to sit, she didn’t. Both moved closer to me. So I moved into next space. They moved up child was looking at things on the shelf. Lady in front finished so I was able to stand on the ⭕️ for telling them what you wanted. I also had deodorant in my hand. She bloodwell moved so if I had stepped back I would have likely stood on her foot she was less than a metre, the child was actually about 2 m. So I turned around and asked her could she please move back and that there was markings on the floor. She muttered something then moved. I did roll my eyes 👀 at the young girl as I told her what I needed. She is young, cheery and polite to everyone but not frightened to tell them if they try to come in when there are four customers in. I gave her a big thank you when I left.

Going to the Doctor’s Surgery was like Fort Knox.
Gel, press buzzer tell them who you are don’t let anyone else in. Well I buzzed it four times before I got any response it wasn’t clear whether to hold down and speak which I did fourth time as just a quick buzz got me nowhere. It was persisting down when I came out. Then pressed the lights button it no longer bleeps and I was noticed it on red but luckily still checked and a woman driving a van came around the corner and straight through the red light.

I had a big mug of tea and two pieces of lemon cake and have vegetated on the sofa since. About to start tea. I think I will be staying home tomorrow.

Lovely to see you back Cineraria.
Sing that is awful about DDs no longer a boyfriend. Definitely follow through on that. Glad Cagletini is enjoying nursery.
BFs granddaughterDS1 is vulnerable so BF is having her a couple of days a week and also the grandson from her DS3 as the childminder can’t have him. BF said she is worn out. She can’t have her family Sunday Dinner now as there are twelve plus herself and grandad (DH). We had 6 when I was there last. DGD hasn’t seen me for months and was “ too shy” to come in the kitchen🤣 she’s two.

TheUpholder · 11/09/2020 19:04

Hi everyone. An unexpected day off for me as we are also self-isolating due to a family member developing symptoms. Thankfully not too poorly and I’m sure it’ll be negative. Did I use my free day productively. Not likely. It’s been a day of comfy clothes, TV and entertaining DD, who is not taking kindly to isolation and wanted to go to nursery, the beach, the park, the shop, and for some inexplicable reason, the post office.

I managed to make the beds, empty and reload the DW, hand wash a few bits, do an LOL (which is the still in the machine), and clean up play doh. Tumble dryer is not fixed as DH has yet to call anyone (sorting work men are his job) and obviously we can’t have anyone in yet until we know the results of relative’s test. It’s very frustrating isn’t it Stressy. Hope you had emergency wine and chocolate supplies in, unlike me.

I did start my Christmas shopping today though! Only a few bits ordered but I’ve also come up with some ideas for others.

Zone work has been sadly lacking this week. I will try harder tomorrow, Brownie’s promise.

Love the hat Mc, not long left!

I am most impressed with the Covid box ED. Will have to create one myself I think.

That cup of tea sounds well earned Wellies

Waves to Mog, Sing, Dancing, Bower, Lisette, Merry, Hazel, Alex, Orange, Cineraria, Chic, That, and Zoo, SC and Double if you’re reading.

Mc3209 · 11/09/2020 19:04

Sing that's a curve ball. Annoying. Now onto the exciting journey of finding the next series. What shall it be?

Wellies oh I like the sound of the duck for tea. I am not native to Britain (or English language for that matter), and I remember the first time I heard the expression of tea in the context of food, I was quite confused. I always thought tea was purely a beverage. Took me a while to figure out sometimes it means 'evening meal' 😬

Stressy sending hugs your way. Good thing is, the only way is up!

Foxes what breed are the dogs? They sound like a mischief. Hope it goes well!

Re album, company replied and they said they will fix it for free. I was very surprised as it's clearly my fault, but I am also very grateful to them.

TheUpholder · 11/09/2020 19:09

Cross posts

Hope the dogs behave Foxes, not sure how I missed you off my list

Sounds like a stressful day Bower, hope you enjoyed the cake.

SingToTheSky · 11/09/2020 19:41

Aww thanks all for understanding. It was my go to for relaxing lately and it’s sooo relatable. I have found more of the DVDs on US amazon though, so I may spend some of my fun money on them (import DVDs are fine as we have a multi region player)

As for the next series, I’m not sure really as I have such a huge list! And I’m not that focused lately so it’s quite hard to concentrate on dramas or anime. I was wondering about community or modern family though as they must be quite easy, or schitts creek as has been mentioned on here :)

I had a lovely 90min chat with a friend just now (on speaker while I was making dinner) which I could only do as the toddler had a danger nap.

Mc3209 · 11/09/2020 19:42

Upholder I hope the test results come back soon.
Bower the new normal is a bit surreal, isn't it. I am glad you managed to see a councillor face to face, it makes a difference.

My Ta Da list today is a bit scanty:
🎉Morning routine
🎉Evening routine
Quite happy how the 'Kitchen' week went, managed to hit most of the missions. Just need to clean inside the fridge at some point.

Enough housework for this week methinks.
Good weekend, everyone! 🍒👋

foxessocks · 11/09/2020 20:00

I love the middle sing it's brilliant, I've watched it all and it is well worth seeing it all the way through! They took it off prime before and then put it back so I was lucky enough to watch it all for free, that's so annoying they've removed it!

The dogs are Springer spaniels! It was a bit manic trying to get the kids to bed with the dogs rushing about as well but we've managed it and everyone is now settled. Ds had a tantrum because he wanted to eat popcorn now Hmm but then he just suddenly said sorry, cried and cuddled me so I have a feeling he just needs to go to sleep!

merryhouse · 11/09/2020 22:34

Cineraria the thing about celery is to make sure you get one that is "self-blanching" then you don't need to dig up little trenches all round them. (Pretty much a game-changer, I gather)

Sing what a dreadful boy! Imagine some of the mumsnet posts from his partners and exes in ten to twenty years' time...

Mc cute hat Bear

TaDa

What should I make for eating after tea while we watch a film? I bought some cream but we don't have many baking Fancies (vanilla essence, three glace cherries, some stem ginger and half a bag of walnuts).

SingToTheSky · 12/09/2020 00:12

Well I found something else to watch quite by chance - opened Netflix and a new series called the duchess was at the top so I gave it a go, so funny! Not for the easily offended 🤣 it’s a bit like Workin Moms in some ways.

Forgot to do a list yesterday. Was so peopled out from the day before.
