fridge freezer in garage

Has anyone had any problems with keeping a fridge freezer in their garage? I desperately need the extra storage due to v small kitchen and more mouths to feed since lockdown! I know it isn't generally recommended cos of temperature instability outside, but is it usually ok?

You can buy appliances which are suitable for outbuildings. A standard freezer will defrost when temperatures are too low.

BIWI · 06/08/2020 12:05

As long as you buy one that is suitable for outside use (even though it's inside!) then you'll be fine. We did this before we had our extension built, although in our case it was the shed. Bought a fridge freezer from Tesco and made sure it would work there.

We have a freezer suitable for use in an outbuilding, it was no more expensive than a regular freezer.

Dogsgowoofwoof · 06/08/2020 12:07

I never knew this. I’ve just got an old regular freezer in my garage. It’s fine.

HasaDigaEebowai · 06/08/2020 12:10

Mine are both in the garage and are both fine.

runner2 · 06/08/2020 12:11

Are there particular brands that are suitable for outbuildings?

We’ve had fridge freezers in the garage for years.

FiveShelties · 06/08/2020 12:12

Always had a wine fridge and a chest freezer in the garage and never had any problems whilst living in the UK.

CMMum88 · 06/08/2020 12:12

My DM has a spare fridge and chest freezer in the garage and they work fine:)

thisisbobbins · 06/08/2020 12:16

@runner2 I've just bought a freezer and certainly for AO, it tells you in the specs if it's ok for outbuildings.

netflixismysidehustle · 06/08/2020 12:17

I have a chest freezer in the garage and it's fine

BIWI · 06/08/2020 12:18

You do need to be careful, because if the temperature drops below 3 degrees, the freezer will turn itself off. Perhaps not too bad if it's full, and the temperature isn't that low for too long, but we lost a lot of food during a particularly cold spell this way. I thought it had broken down! I had no idea it was a 'thing' that you had to have freezers that were specifically for being kept in unheated areas.

It should tell you in the technical specifications, so double check those out. If you're in a store and the assistant can't tell you/reassure you, then don't buy it!

HathorX · 06/08/2020 12:20

We got a Beko fridge freezer and it has been in the garage for 7 years in two different houses and it has never missed a beat. It wasn't expensive.

I know people say they turn off if it gets cold but we have never noticed this being a problem.

BIWI · 06/08/2020 12:28

If you go online, to a site like this you can see that there is a filter for garage/shed use.

Sparticuscaticus · 06/08/2020 12:31

We have fridge and freezer in garage, both are old ones that I moved when I replaced them. Very useful, no problems

YummyInMyTummy · 06/08/2020 13:05

We have a Beko fridge freezer from Curry’s in the garage - it’s suitable for outbuildings/outside. It’s great, gives us soooo much extra food storage!

BringBackDoves · 06/08/2020 13:07

Have a fridge and freezer in garage. Just normal ones, been there for years and never switched off. It’s great having the extra space especially at Christmas.

My garage freezer is beko and suitable for outbuildings. Yours could be too.
pumpkinpie01 · 06/08/2020 13:12

I have always had freezers in the garage our current one is a Lec and it's fine

EasilyDelighted · 06/08/2020 13:16

It's fridge freezers as opposed to just freezers that have this problem, something to do with the fridge thermostat if it controls both fridge and freezer, so if surroundings are below fridge temp it switches itself off. Or something like that. They are all rated whether suitable or not, ours is a Beko chosen for that reason and it has always worked fine in winter.

wrensandrobins · 06/08/2020 13:17

We have a standard freezer in the garage for a couple of years and had only one issue

A mouse ate some of the electronics! We had to buy a new one! Now we have an obstacle course of mouse traps to prevent it happening again! I think outbuildings can be a bit more prone to mice!

coronafiona · 06/08/2020 13:23

I have both in my garage, never had any problems

bloodywhitecat · 06/08/2020 14:24

Fridge/freezers suitable for outbuildings

hoochymamgu · 07/08/2020 10:43

Just bought a beko one for this reason. Worth it for the extra freezer space Smile

Murmurur · 07/08/2020 13:27

Think about the mechanics of it too. We had our only fridge in the utility room and it drove me demented having to go out there twice (to fetch milk and return it) for every cup of tea.

Depending what you already have, consider replacing Eg an existing FF in the kitchen with a large fridge, and putting a full size freezer in the garage. And 70cm FF is quite a lot roomier than a 60cm one.
