Social distancing around the Maypole: Fledglings fly into Flylady thread May 2020.

Lisette1940 · 30/04/2020 15:16

Welcome to the May Flylady thread Fledglings! We are finally coming to the end of Spring and, erm, what a Spring it has been. Keep safe everyone and a special shoutout to Fledglings who are in the frontline of the response to Covid 19.
Lane has been superlative with the keep calm corner and has had a truly magnificent engagement with fledglings all through April – well done Lane!!! I have totally abandoned my routines (and my clean eating) and have been flying perilously close to the ground but am ready for take off again. But we operate a no fledgling left behind policy and indeed Flylady herself stresses that you are never behind in the system – no need to deep clean the house first, just jump right in.
All are welcome here from longtimers to newbie and those lurking – we all follow this zone-based Flylady cleaning system:
There are five zones and at the beginning and the end of the month we usually straddle Zone 1 and zone 5.
(amend rooms to suit your house – I do the living and dining room together as it’s all one room in my house)
MAY
Zone 1 Hall, entrance/dining room (Fri 1 – Sat 2)
Zone 2 Kitchen (Sun 3- Sat 9)
Zone 3 Bathroom and another room (Sun 10- Sat 16)
Zone 4 Master bedroom/closet (Sun 17 – Sat 23)
Zone 5 Living room (Sun 24 – Sun 31)

Pop onto the Flylady website to have a closer look here but be aware that lots of emails arrive if you sign up.

Flylady has an introductory scheme called Babysteps which is a light 31 day introduction to the system – dressing to shoes, shining your sink etc here.

There is a morning routine and an evening routine to keep things ticking over and a weekly home cleaning hour to change bed sheets, mop, hoover, take out rubbish etc. Flylady doesn’t want us cleaning all day so she is very keen on using a timer. Clean then stop!
In addition each day has a purpose: see the daily focus here

Monday: Weekly home cleaning hour (can be split into ten minute sections and spread over week) here
Tuesday: Plan and play (Menu planning, family event planning)
Wednesday: Anti-procrastination day
Thursday: Errand day
Friday: Clear out bags, fill car with petrol, date night
Saturday: Family fun
Sunday: Lift your spirit

Launch pad for guidance every day! launch pad

Habit of the month of May is moving – whether that’s your daily get out of the house during lockdown or in house movement. – moving is not my strongest point apart from pottering around the house…
We also have a naughty corner as a restful break out space and a Keep Calm Corner (KCC). I suspect I’ll be better at the naughty corner rather than the latter but I’ll do my best! Not sure I can muster the memes but I’ll do my best to keep spirits up.
So welcome to the new thread (I hope I haven’t left anyone out): Lane, SC, zoo, Bower, KTCluck, Willow/Megiddo, foxes, That, averytiredMom, fluffliest, ED, Strawberry, Chic, Hazel, Happiness, Cineraria, We3, stressy, and give.

And breathe!

Morning Brew

Baby ds up at 530. Just put him down for a nap but dc3 and 4 are both up by now. 😴

KTCluck · 24/05/2020 07:34

Morning Brew . DD pounced on me at 6am wanting to play hide and seek. Thankfully she settled for 10 minutes colouring in on my phone while I opened my eyes properly. We’ve also done a puzzle, she’s had her breakfast and is happy with Peppa so time for my brew. Hope the DC go easy on you That

Fluffiest · 24/05/2020 09:50

Morning everyone!

Looks like a rainy day here, although we haven't had any hail like lane. So I'm glad I dragged family outside for twenty minutes yesterday as I think we are going to be inside all of today again.

Pet peeve - leaving two inches of washing up water in the sink. Weirdly its something that both my DM and DMIL do whenever they visit, and I cant complain about it because that would be most ungrateful as they have just done the favour of washing up. Please note: I never ask them to wash up, they just slip off and do it. They are actually very sweet and massively helpful to me so this is a small pet peeve that I am going to live with....I just don't understand why they do it...its really gross having to put my hand in it a couple of hours later to pull the plug.

LaneBoy · 24/05/2020 10:19

Morning all!

This morning was odd, I didn’t wake up until gone 8, and that was to the sound of DS looking at the chore chart and getting some jobs done without being asked Shock and then DD1 was downstairs by half past Shock

I’ve still squandered the morning though of course. 🙄 I could have at least finished my book, but no.

Smartcasual · 24/05/2020 10:22

Morning all!

Great list Lane!

Quick question: have any of you on here used The Organised Mum Method. If so, how does it compare to Flylady? What are the main differences? Things that work well and not so well (for you?).

I know it's sacrilegious to ask this on a Fly thread (and this may have already been discussed way back) but finding it hard to stay on top of everything here cleaning wise.

Lisette1940 · 24/05/2020 10:45

Not at all SC. I use flylady because of all if you on here Grin I like to be in sync with you all. With OM you do a massive house clean at the beginning. Mon - Thursday you do certain mainly used rooms such as kitchen every week. Friday focus rotates every week and is deep cleaning one area. You get complete days off over weekend.

LaneBoy · 24/05/2020 10:51

I don’t really use any method other than “having low standards” 😂
I am struggling to get going today. Again.

Need to check DD1 is actually doing her chores as we’ve told her she can meet a friend for a SD walk (well we are saying socially distanced so often we may as well shorten it) IF she gets stuff done.

Smartcasual · 24/05/2020 11:05

Thanks Lisette (I'm just looking at TOMM quick start page and it all seems quite sensible. Website seems more up to date too which, let's face it, wouldn't be hard! Grin) I think moving from room to room within a week atm might work better than weekly zone working during lockdown!

and Lane Grin

Smartcasual · 24/05/2020 11:07

Eurgh at leaving washing up water in sink Fluffiest! Can't stand leaving anything in sink or not cleaning out plug hole properly either!

Shannaratiger · 24/05/2020 11:22

Morning all

Off to naughty corner. No FLYing here. DS's mental health has got so bad finally emailed his tutor begging for him to be able to go back to school after half term. They agreed to 2 days which is so perfect and DS is very happy, could almost see some of the tension leaving his body. I'm supposed to be going back to work after half term.
Friday though got a text saying DH is in the high risk category and needs to socially isolate - better late than never means can now get online delivery and help collecting prescription. Should I go back to work though? DS is definitely staying at school, DH will only be in the car.
Dd is coping alright doing some work even though as year 11 doesn't have to, weird she should have been attempting her GCSE's.

Have actually done some of the jobs I was procrastinating about.
Am also thinking about moving onto cleaning jobs rather than rooms, think it might work better in the current situation.
Am really agreeing with some of the list of annoyances:
Toilet rolls and empty bottles never getting brought downstairs.
Dc's refuse to put anything into the rubbish bin just leave it on the table, visibly shudder when I even suggest going near the bin. Hmm
Shaving all around the sink, manages to rinse the actual sink.

Will try and keep up with the thread now I'm mentally slightly more calm.

Hope everyone has a nice Sunday and enjoy the sunshine.

foxessocks · 24/05/2020 11:26

I looked a TOMM a few times sc and it did look pretty sensible to me! Unfortunately all these methods want me to do all the horrible cleaning jobs I hate and there seems to be no way round that 😂

Ta das
Spent fifteen minutes taking toys in the living room back upstairs with the help of the kids, good exercise! But still stuff left down here 🤦‍♀️
Dd has been busy tidying her bedroom and turning the spare room even more into a play room clearly she has far too much stuff 🙄
Dishwasher on
Washing on
Kitchen tidied / wiped down
Emptied kitchen bin / cleared out recycling from the kitchen / emptied food waste bin

To do
Quick tidy upstairs (the bits dd didn't get to first!)
S&s bathroom
Empty bathroom bin

Annoyingly we were going to get a takeaway tonight but they've run out of pizzas due to such high demand yesterday. We could order from somewhere else but I had my heart set on this particular place as it's a favourite. Oh well, roast chicken it is!

foxessocks · 24/05/2020 11:28

X post shannara sorry it's been so hard Sad glad your ds can go back and it's made him feel less stressed

Stilllivinginazoo · 24/05/2020 11:47

Lisette they were doing few pitiful mews earlier, but i was so wrecked ignored and try doze bit longer.the persistent we are STARRRRRVING ones I cannot ignore!
shannaraFlowers
SC i try TOMM on insta and was a disorganised mess, couldn't follow wtf was going on!!(think designed those already familiar with website)
Lane low standards method seems reasonable to me,saves wasting energy haven't got on crap that gets as bad again in minutes....

Ventured to shopswith zoolets at 8(after brekkie)as was out bread, fruit, milk etc. was blustery but nice out.fair few people about, but not so much D's complete meltdown.suspect had try it but later wouldn't have been the case

Since then-
Wipe shop
Put away
Wash on
Sweep lower floors
Empty and clean kitchen bin
S+s
Wish hadn't looked at laundry bins...
Wipe kitchen surface with undiagnosed sticky patchas lil zoo cup next to it and she's turned into a right crack handed Larry recently...
Do stomach exercises
Arm stretches
Start feel really tired again now...debating if I could slip in a cheeky 20 minutes before start sorting lunch as that'd be long enough to perk me a bit without stop me sleep later!

Pm plan
Bit recipe sorting
Possibly bake
Self care Sunday❤️

KTCluck · 24/05/2020 12:06

There’s always time for a sneaky nap Zoo Grin

Sc I looked at TOMM and it seems sensible, but just didn’t work for me on my work days. With Flylady I can just do zone work on my days off whereas with TOMM I felt I’d be missing too much. I like love the link but my DH would just scatter the stubble on removal Grin

Nice to have you back Shannara. Glad DS is happy to be going back.

That’s so disappointing about your takeaway Foxes. Hope you get one next time.

Fluff I hate manky sink water too. DH does the same Envy.

Lane how lovely for you to wake up to that. Wouldn’t worry about eating the morning. Sounds like a well deserved rest.

Ta Da:
✅ beds
✅ s & s
✅ DW
✅ LOL
✅ walk with DD to drop flowers at DGM
✅ video call with family

DH has made soup with leftover ham for tea. Currently waiting on a Sunday lunch being delivered from our local pub. Very excited!

KTCluck · 24/05/2020 12:07

*wasting the morning. Though eating sounds reasonable too.

Smartcasual · 24/05/2020 13:11

Thanks everyone!

Unfortunately all these methods want me to do all the horrible cleaning jobs I hate and there seems to be no way round that 😂

^^ Aye , never a true word and all of that Foxes! Grin. Very true sadly!

Zoo thanks, that doesn't sound good, I'm not on Instagram so am only accessing TOMM via website and Facebook but need to investigate further!

Glad the arm exercises are proving useful! I've found them very good. Is your shoulder any better? Hope you CAN AND DO get a rest today! Flowers

Definitely KT that was my first thought on seeing the "beard-catcher" too...that DH would still get it all over the floor, transferring the trimmings to bin! Enjoy your lunch!

[I tried taping DH to the sofa this morning so he could have a rest but he has so far made a loaf and a cut-and-come-again-cake and a massive mess and is currently making more mess playing with tubes in the laundry room in an attempt to further destroy fix wms. I know I am horrible complaining about him on here all the time as his intentions and actions are good, it is just there are no boundaries - he is in to everything - on top of everything - it's hard to explain! Grin]

Lovely to "see" you again Shannara! So glad that your ds is happier now that he is heading back to school PT! Hope getting shopping delivered is a help too!

I opened all the parcels that had been quarantined in the outer hall for four days or so! I am slightly embarrassed about this but am now the proud owner of an ironing stool [ #oldcrump ] three new buckets, two cleaning caddies, some microfibre cloths, a ginormous, extended tickling stick/duster thing, and several sets of plastic storage drawers ...going to clean out and rearrange under the kitchen sink first tomorrow morning!

Tally-ho everyone! Have a good Sunday!

Fluffiest · 24/05/2020 13:18

I tried TOMM too, but found that the 30 minutes a day cleaning didn't include the basics, they were classed as level 1 jobs that should take you 15 minutes a day like washing up, cleaning the loo etc... I could never do those jobs in 15 minutes and then felt unduly conned by the system. Still follow her on Instagram though, as quite like her.

I'm not that great at following Flylady either but enjoy the support and company on here

Smartcasual · 24/05/2020 13:30

Thanks Fluffiest that is my concern too about those level one jobs... Will never get them done in 15 mins! There's other things I do like though so I might try and combine elements of both.

Smartcasual · 24/05/2020 13:34

Meant to add to that Fluffiest, that I'm not that good at Flying either! Grin

And also that extendable tickling stick thing is for getting cobwebs out of tall corner mouldings not for cleaning under kitchen sink obviously!

Morning all I will catch up in a bit!
Sunday is my day of cleaning, I’ve managed to give the bathroom a good scrub and I will mop and hoover when the kids go to bed. I’m feeling really burnt out though

didmyhousethismornin · 24/05/2020 16:53

Okay going to catch up now!

that both of mine wake up at 5:30, they’re toddlers now and I hate it. I’m such a night owl I’ve barely had any sleep by the time they wake me up!.

I bet that was a nice surprise lane!

shannara I’m glad your DS is able to go back to school, it sounds really positive for him!.

That’s annoying about your takeaway foxes

We’ve decided to go on a drive to excercise at one of our favourite places. There’s less people here than I thought would be so we’re going to have a picnic. I’m feeling quite positive today.

LittlemissAWOL · 24/05/2020 18:34

👋 everyone. I've caught up on the thread over the course of 2 days so have forgotten any personals other than 😮 that hail at this time of year!

I used to do TOMM and still do actually follow stage 1 jobs for daily basics but the time they say you can do it in is nonsense. Also like KT I found it hard to fit round work so just felt constantly behind. With flylady I never feel as behind even if I am IYSWIM.

Haven't done a lot for a Sunday for me
☀️ hoovered everywhere including pulling furniture out to do under in living room
☀️ polished everywhere
☀️ changed bedding
☀️ S&S
☀️ mopped
☀️ scrubbed tables
☀️ 3 x LOL
☀️ ironing
☀️ cleaned hob and worktops in kitchen
☀️ emptied bins
☀️ had a bath and changed from yesterday's pj's to today's 😂
☀️ baked hobnobs which were a disaster as was my Victoria sponge yesterday. I can cook but can I hell bake. Going to attempt a salted caramel cookie dough traybake thing tomorrow so 🤞 for better results

So excited for the sunshine tomorrow although this wind has been good for getting my washing dry

Lisette1940 · 24/05/2020 19:18

littlemiss no baking is ever wasted! Even if it doesn't turn out exactly right, it's almost always tasty.🥞🎂🍰🍥

🦇got DD1 to do chores
🦇helped her with English
🦇replied to email from tutor
🦇sorted an app subscription and set reminder for when to cancel/renew
🦇got the Caglets to find take up more games for me (already had the list), then I wiped and shelved them
🦇put a fair amount of laundry away
🦇was super brave and asked about a (properly distanced) meet up as had been suggested the other day... got pretty much ignored. Ouch.
