Weirdest cleaning 'hack' you've ever tried?

ladybee28 · 03/01/2020 20:44

Will never forget coming home from school one day to find my mum completely out of breath, rubbing a whole loaf of bread all over the sofa; apparently it was "the best way to get dust out of the ridges – like an exfoliator"

What weird 'hacks' have you fallen for tried?

Rubbed paracetamol onto my iron, it was red hot and I burnt my fingers 😳.

BoffinMum · 05/01/2020 20:37

Historically they used to use bread dough to clean wallpaper.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 09/01/2020 14:03

I did the paracetamol/iron thing and it worked brilliantly!. Hot iron and use tweezers to hold the paracetamol tablet.

DownWentTheFlag · 09/01/2020 14:07

I squeezed a tube of hair removal cream into my shower drain Grin I’d read about it on here. Didn’t work at all and my husband still brings it up to mock me.

SandAndSea · 11/01/2020 04:08

e-cloths. I think it's pretty weird that you use them as they are or with water. I like the idea though. I'm using less chemicals/products and it's simpler.

Rubbing shaving cream into your shower doors and bathroom mirrors stops them fogging up and getting dirty
Sounds mental but it works

BasilOfBakerStreet · 12/01/2020 11:25

Dishwasher tablet on the oven door! Worked a treat.

ClemDanFango · 12/01/2020 11:28

Soaking tissue in bleach and leaving it around the bath to bleach mould stains. It didn’t work very well.

whatnow40 · 12/01/2020 11:28

Second the dishwasher tablet on the oven door!!

KizzyWayfarer · 12/01/2020 11:29

Pouring coke down the toilet for limescale. It just dyed the limescale brown.

Joloh · 12/01/2020 12:50

De-rusting a shower rail with scrunched up aluminium foil and a can of coke. (It worked!)

BeyondFlubeInclusionaryRF · 12/01/2020 12:53

Yep I second coke down the toilet. Waste of good coke Grin

justilou1 · 12/01/2020 12:55

Denture tablets overnight to clean tea-stained cups and mugs.
WD-40 to prevent skid marks and lime scale buildup inside clean toilet bowl (not Y-fronts, damn it!)

SaskiaRembrandt · 12/01/2020 12:58

What is a paracetamol meant to do to an iron?

buckeejit · 12/01/2020 13:29

WD40 for the toilet?!

ParkheadParadise · 12/01/2020 13:33

Tomato sauce in a burnt pan on a low heat.It worked!

Apolloanddaphne · 12/01/2020 14:16

Indid the paracetamol on the iron thing. I used pliers to grip it and it worked a treat. It gets rid of any burned on brown marks

I also used ash from my log burner to clean the burner door. Also worked a treat.

Most recently I used my hairdryer to melt candle wax spilled on the slate hearth so I could dab it off. Also worked a treat.

SaskiaRembrandt · 12/01/2020 14:23

Apolloanddaphne thank you!

furrytoebean · 12/01/2020 16:01

I used to work in a high end fish and chip restaurant (well as high end as fish and chips places can be) and we used to clean all the brass with brown sauce.
Worked a treat actually.

Southmouth · 12/01/2020 18:00

@justilou1 how do you go about the WD-40?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/01/2020 18:44

Oh yes , I tried the Coke in the loo tip ( we got a bottle with a take away , no-one drinks it) . It stained the loo brown Hmm

Not weird (because it is well known and it works) - ovenproof dish , foil, salt , dishwasher tablet and boiling water . To clean silverware .

TheReluctantCountess · 12/01/2020 18:52

I suppose you just spray wd40 around the bowl 🤷🏼‍♀️

justilou1 · 12/01/2020 23:42

Sorry - yes. In Aus - different time zone. Yes. Spray around sparklingly clean (preferably dry-ish) bowl and it will remain so. Nothing sticks to it.

numberonecook · 14/01/2020 12:50

Spilt wax on a top so I put some kitchen paper over it and ironed it. OMG the wax came straight off! I thought it was ruined

goingtotown · 16/01/2020 22:45

ClemDanFango Leave it overnight it works a treat.
