Pre-Christmas House Princessing

Is there a thread about sorting out house for Christmas?

We had been planning a quiet Christmas and now have relatives coming and while I'm excited to be hosting, the house needs a lot of TLC.

So I want somewhere to record my house and garden princessing achievements. It may be some decluttering, some cleaning, bits of DIY, and eventually doing Xmas decs. Anyone else need motivating?

Yesterday I finished curtain repairs and rehung curtains.
Today I'm aiming to put bark chips mulch on beds in front garden.

I stole @Nanalisa60 idea.... I have booked professional oven cleaners to sort out the manky oven. Of course this is pre Christmas princessing because Christmas dinner will be loads better if cooked in a clean oven.

Today’s plan is to remove the charity bags from upstairs to an actual charity shop.

I also need to dig out the paint that we use on the downstairs bathroom so I can touch up the marks left of the wall by DD storing her scooter in there.

Well done you!, nothing wrong in getting a bit of help!!

My man is coming next week to do mine!, I have cleaned out all the cupboards cleaned and sorted, defrosted the fridge freezer. I cleaned the washing machine the washing powder draw was revolting I pulled it out and could not believe the mould under the draw used an old toothbrush bleach and mould cleaner to get rid of it!!

GOING TO BUY Dettol washing machine and dishwasher cleaner at home bargains this morning to finish the job off.

givememarmite · 15/11/2019 11:06

Great to read everyone's updates and progress 👍🏼
I am making verrrry slow progress, managed to finish off the kitchen cupboards on Tuesday, but I have family coming to visit and see our new baby this afternoon which forced me to have a good clear out and tidy up of the living/dining room! Was just the kick up the backside I needed!

Next week am going to concentrate on declutter if and organising the playroom and storage in the cellar...make enough space for all the new stuff that will arrive at Christmas...

mumof2masterofnone · 15/11/2019 13:30

Still need to tackle the kitchen cupboards, hoping to do it Monday morning while DH is off to watch the girls.

I've got rid of all of the outgrown toys just need to put some bits in the attic ready for when the baby is old enough for them. All the bedrooms have been decluttered and I've sent loads to the charity shop this week.
It feels so much bigger and fresher with zero junk!

I was looking at some of the light fittings and light shades earlier and they could probably do with a good going over too.

It's also my 2 year olds 3rd birthday on the 4th and my airing cupboard is currently the hiding place for all her presents, when their all out I could do with giving that a good sort out and organise.

Llamallamadingdong · 15/11/2019 21:29

So we got a charity bag through the door this morning meaning that I didn’t have to trek to the charity shop after all.

Cleaned upstairs and have started to sort out the bedding, aiming for 2 sets per each bed. Some of the bottom sheets are really worn so they can get ditched as well.

Tomorrow I will be ordering some new coat hooks as we don’t have enough of them in the hall meaning that you have to claw your was past loads of coats to get upstairs.

Mumista · 16/11/2019 14:31

This weekend's princessing is cleaning the freezer drawers. They're grim.

Lunafortheloveogod · 16/11/2019 21:16

Still reskimming the hall from hell.. well dp is, thank feck!

Two out of 3 bedrooms are back to sitting pretty, new wardrobe filled, another two bags for the charity shop ready (they’ll think I’m a hoarder)
Bedroom 3 is filled with either for the new baby or for someone stuff at the mo so it’ll take a while to clear, once the larger stuff goes next weekish we’re onto a winner.

Tomorrow the top of the halls ready to paint, the stairs are on the skim list. I’m slaying the living room.

Next week: nursery wardrobe/drawers arrive for dc2 and trofasts for both of them. And a run to the dump with all the cardboard boxes.

This may take me beyond Christmas Confused

Trumpton · 17/11/2019 08:00

Freezer from Hell defrosting . Why do still put unidentified leftovers in the freezer?
Jamie’s get ahead gravy ( minus star anise ) in oven .
I could do with staining the sun room floor but think I have to draw the line somewhere .
My wardrobe sorted and bag of party type clothes ready to go to charity shop where, hopefully , someone will enjoy them.

Trumpton · 19/11/2019 09:05

And today ... stripped off cream (summer) sofa covers and wrestled on terracotta ( winter) ones .
Late this year .
Will was cream ones in the spring and put back on .

Llamallamadingdong · 19/11/2019 12:57

36 days until Christmas

More progress made- a few bits given away on freecycle (DIY stuff that charity shops wouldn’t be interested in).

Changed manky trim on the shower screen. The builders didn’t put a long enough trim on so we water was leaking out of the bath and through some dodgy sealant. All sorted now, bath looks all shiny.

Currently have a joiner fixing garden fence as it was tilting because of a rotten post. Garden is definitely looking tidy.

Bowerbird let me know if you get some Holly trees. I’d like one to put beside our front door but we’ve had planters nicked previously so might get one for the back of the house instead.

How is everyone else getting on?

mumof2masterofnone · 19/11/2019 21:05

House pretty much done now! After clearing out 5 charity bags full last week I somehow have found another bag full of clothing and bedding to be donated today.

Need to give the inside of the cupboards a wipe down but the rest is just the daily stuff!

Need to keep this up for the new year.
Minimal clutter and really cut back on the crap I buy and don't use!

RoseyPeas · 20/11/2019 09:48

Thanks for the time check Llama!
Eek I have a LOT still to do - so envious @mumof2masterofnone !

I have done some more tidying up outside - leaves swept up, more planting.

One room still to declutter but I'm getting there! Then I can start Xmas poncing Grin

Annasgirl · 21/11/2019 13:34

Well I did the main food cupboard yesterday (and posted on the declutter thread) and to-day I did the playroom. Whew! I've been avoiding it but it really needed a deep declutter and I always like to get it done in November so that when the extra stuff arrives at Christmas there is room for it. Thankfully this year there is only 1 person getting junk (sorry, toys) and so I will hopefully manage to keep on top of it.

Llamallamadingdong · 22/11/2019 10:46

Argh! Just when I thought I was making progress, and here is a leak in the kitchen ceiling! X

RoseyPeas · 24/11/2019 08:51

Oh no llama!
Hope you get it sorted soon!

I have to say that all this house princessing doesn't leave much time for MN Grin

I have now cleared most rooms of clutter - don't get me wrong, it's not minimalist, but it's now "homely".

I have left utility room as I'm hoping that no-one will need to go in there!

It's been completely exhausting but the house feels so much better for it. The worst of the completely unkempt garden is gone too, and I've done some planters.

Next job is a massive deep clean - not the usual lick and a promise!

Well done Annasgirl and mumof2!

Good to know that people are still going strong.- even if it means no time for MN!!

Got rid of another 2 bin bags of stuff to charity shop and donated some too small football boots to friends with younger kids

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 27/11/2019 14:08

one pile of stuff gone from the kitchen, weather is still too awful to get my worktop sanded so it can go back on the cupboard

I have a list up in the kitchen for jobs but I am calling a halt to any major diying and am concentrating on the de cluttering

and the sitting room radiator is bloody leaking, so that's a pita, have got it isolated though so the rest of the heating is still okay.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 28/11/2019 22:44

I refixed the coving in the downstairs toilet...for some reason the last lot of adhesive just did not work
I may give it a coat of paint in there at the weekend!

ALthough it's probably better to tackle the kitchen coving which is also looking iffy

elprup · 28/11/2019 23:30

I’m so glad to have come across this thread. My house is an absolute state at the moment, with clutter, dust and general untidiness everywhere you look! I’m not hosting for Christmas this year fortunately, but I am having a small gathering on NYE that I need to be ready for. I’m working crazy hours for the next week but will need to get down to some major tidying and cleaning after that.

Pippapotomus · 30/11/2019 12:41

I've been lurking, and need a kick up the arse now it's nearly December.
This week I have
Finally taken the binbags of spent fireworks off the patio and to the dump.
Repainted DDs floorboards in bedroom.
Dumped a lot of stuff into the garage.

This week I plan to
Tidy the garden, remulch and get rid of leaves.
Clean the carpets.
Reorganise DS bedroom.

MyFavouriteTimeOfYear · 30/11/2019 13:22

Oh please can I join!! You are all what I need to motivate me!!! (currently sat in the kitchen with a coffee, that I have managed to make last half an hour, not wanting to go and start cleaning!)

My mission today is to vax all the carpets and wipe down all the skirting boards!

TannatTart · 30/11/2019 13:48

Can I join in? I’m is the US, so we’ve just got thanksgiving over and done with, time to put the fall decs away, and think about Christmas. Also planning on selling the house next spring so a major decluttter is on the cards.

RoseyPeas · 30/11/2019 17:38

Hello, welcome to all! (Hello to any lurkers tooWink)

It may seem that this is a slow-moving thread, but that's just because we're all busy house princessing!

I've spent today going through kitchen cupboards - not that I'm expecting my visitors to go through them Grin, I hope it will make cooking a bit less stressful!

Tomorrow I'm going to be wiping all the skirting boards in the house!

Love hearing what everyone else is doing.

Christmas has hit! Grin

House is fully organised and sorted, it's just MAINTAINING it now Confused getting a lot of condensation on the windows over night now so having to clean every blooming window Every day.

My daughters 3rd birthday is in the 4th so que the first load of December visitors!

7 month old has began to crawl too so even more reason to keep on top of it all. Smile

Elenorrigbywoes · 02/12/2019 21:02

I had a painter today and got the last bedroom and the living room painted. I cleaned the rooms and they are looking well. I have a number of leftover items and if I can't find a space for them by the weekend I am donating them. We just have too much stuff. I really want to reduce it further and have a place for every single item.
Lego is my new nemisis. There are so many tiny pieces and they want to leave their creations out on display!
