Unexplained stinky front door..

Moved house recently and when we viewed it there was quite a potent spicy smell. We assumed they had been cooking and thought nothing of it. When we moved in the house was immaculately clean but the smells was still there. Now that we've been in a few months the smell keeps returning- it has nothing to do with what we've been cooking and it's only right at the front door. I don't think it was ever anything to do with cooking and starting to worry there is something dead somewhere... any ideas??

Get a new front door?

gamerchick · 29/07/2019 19:57

Neighborhood cat spraying it?

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 29/07/2019 19:57

Is it outside? A local tom cat spraying maybe?

abigailthespiderinthehat · 29/07/2019 19:59

It's not the actual front door just the hallway right at the front door. It's not an animal smell- it smells like a stale spice rack.

Like curry powder gone off. Can't trace it to anywhere more specific than front of hallway

Is there carpet there? Maybe smell is in the carpet.

devilinme · 29/07/2019 20:06

Just thought of curry plants, are there any by the front door . They whiff of curry

abigailthespiderinthehat · 29/07/2019 20:07

Hall is tiled, all upstairs carpets are brand new. I've sprayed, scrubbed, disinfected everywhere I can but can't get rid of it. I hate plug ins but they do mask it well but I need rid of it. What on earth would cause the smell of stale curry powder?

OP posts:
abigailthespiderinthehat · 29/07/2019 20:08

No plants nearby...

Can dampness or rot smell like that?

Atlasta · 29/07/2019 20:12

Slugs, silverfish??

abigailthespiderinthehat · 29/07/2019 20:16

Don't know what silverfish are but off to google it...

If it was anything to do with a cat, it can be nigh on impossible to remove all the scent from a Tom cat.

No advice, but we are the second owners of our newbuild flat, and the airing cupboard smells like weed inside.

Has done since we've moved here. There's no weed in it.

Aquamarine1029 · 29/07/2019 20:18

Is there an old outlet or light near there? Sometimes old wiring can really smell.

abigailthespiderinthehat · 29/07/2019 20:23

House isn't that old but there is the cupboard with the meter in it- wiring usually smells fishy though..

Wallpaper glue? Wooden door polish? Does it get worse in hot weather? Probably smth special was used during last renovation.

abigailthespiderinthehat · 29/07/2019 20:24

Just stuck my head in cupboard but just smells of our stinky shoes..

OP posts:
abigailthespiderinthehat · 29/07/2019 20:26

Can only smell it when we first get home- I've been in for over an hour and think I've gone nose blind to it. Sniffing the walls indoor and out (neighbours must think I'm nuts) but can't find anything

abigailthespiderinthehat · 29/07/2019 20:30

Just realised our doormat honks- but not of curry 🤢

locketsprocket · 29/07/2019 20:36

My neighbour house smells like this at the front door, she has a curry plant outside to deter cats

abigailthespiderinthehat · 29/07/2019 21:38

There's no plants nearby to make the smell... I guess it's one of life's mysteries.. just wish it wasn't right at my front door..

Get a new door mat and see if that helps, wash the door down with Zolflora, really good for unexplained whiffs.

abigailthespiderinthehat · 29/07/2019 23:06

Doormat and zoflora on the shopping list for tomorrow!

I've smelt a mix of cumin, curry and BO from old cheap plasticy blinds at a sunny window also a cheap plastic toilet seat in a sunny room. Anything old and plastic near?
