Super-king bed problems!

Moonfish1 · 28/07/2019 09:38

I bought what I thought was my dream bed, and solution to my problems as DP is a very active sleeper and it gives us enough space for this to not be a problem. However it's now driving me insane.

It's an extra deep latex topped mattress, around 35cm. I'm not sure if any of that is part of the problem.

The first problem is that we cannot get a sheet to stay on. We've tried multiple sheets from standard, to extra and even ultra deep and none seem to fit properly. We end up with extra material bunching over the bed and the corners pop up and off so easily.

The second issue is the duvet. No matter what we do there is excess duver cover at the top. (And yes, the duvet is the right way around, we did have it wrong initially!)

It's driving me mad! I'm someone who likes a neat, cosy bed and I'm having to spend 10 minutes every night trying to sort the bed out. I'm also pregnant for the first time and the added hormones are just making this too much (plus I'm concerned for how awkward it'll be when I'm further along).

I'm considering buying a king size even, except I'm worried we will have the same issue. I would happily buy a different super king duvet and even mattress at this point if I could guarantee it wouldn't happen again.

Has anyone else had these problems, and found a solution that actually works please?

Bedding from the big bed company? We have a custom bed and duvet to match. They do bedding for all sizes up to emperor! It's pricey we only have one set of bedsheets and do a quick turnaround on wash day

SeaEagle21 · 28/07/2019 09:47

I have a super king and never had a problem with sheets. I bought my fitted sheets on EBay - measured the deep sides and the bed to get the right size.

If your duvet cover is too big, why not just alter it to fit the duvet ? If the duvet is the right size for the bed, get out the sewing machine ( or take it to an alteration person) and get it made to fit.

We have a super king size, and have 2 separate double duvets and it's heaven.
We just use flat sheets and use bed sheet fasteners, they came from Lakeland I think years ago.

Ragwort · 28/07/2019 09:50

I have a super king & have never had those problems. Bought fitted sheets from John Lewis. But I did kick my DH out to the spare room (king size bed) as I prefer to sleep separately. I think sharing a bed is incredibly hard.
Try two single duvets?

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 28/07/2019 09:54

well obviously something is the wrong size...if the duvet and cover are not matching then one of them is not superking

you need to measure mattress and sheets and not rely on descriptions, ime there is a whole malarkey in making beds and bedding sound bigger than they are

to my mind a five foot bed is a Queen size, six foot is King, seven foot is Emperor but recently i have seen five foot beds described as King size and presumably they claim a six foot as Super King when it's nothing of the sort.

SO measure and check that instead.

We have the issue with the duvet cover. We have a duvet from a reputable brand and two sets of duvet covers in the correct size, also both from reputable brands and yet they are very baggy. They are OK if you get someone to help you hold the duvet and cover at the bottom and give them a really good shake. The duvet almost fills the cover out. But if we forget to do this for one day, we get the dreaded baggy duvet cover at the top. It's just such a big size, I think the duvet just wriggles down inside the cover during the night.

Wellandtrulyoutnumbered · 28/07/2019 10:02

Look for a sheet called Flexi sheet

MoreSlidingDoors · 28/07/2019 10:03

In the UK, for at least the last 30 years:

2’ 6” = small single
3” = single
4’ = small double
4’ 6” = double
5” = king
6” = superking

Have never had the problems you describe with a super king bed, and am on my second in 16 years.

ImogenTubbs · 28/07/2019 10:05

Flat sheet for the base instead of fitted (practice those hospital corners) and switch to sheets and blankets instead of a duvet. We did and have never looked back!

TigerCubScout · 28/07/2019 10:12

@ImogenTubbs - where did you find a superking sized blanket? I haven't been able to find any in the usual high street shops. Ones thatyoucan tuck in at the sides of the bed.

Kittekats · 28/07/2019 10:14

I agree with your sizing moreslidingdoors, I assume MsMighyTitan is from across the pond where of course their Queen is the same as our King etc.

FluffyFluffyRaRa · 28/07/2019 10:15

This is the answer to your fitted sheet. John Lewis sell extra deep fitted super long sheets which should work.

ImogenTubbs · 28/07/2019 11:09

@TigerCubScout - we got ours in John Lewis. They're not as cheap as a duvet but should last years and years. They are waffle style ones which insulate well but don't overheat.

Gustavo1 · 28/07/2019 11:12

We have a super long bed with a very deep mattress. I have the extra deep fitted sheets from m&s and they fit well. No bunching or riding up. Our quilt is from next and I bought super king size pillows and bedding from the white company. We haven’t had any issues. Hope you can get sorted 👍🏻

Movinghouseatlast · 28/07/2019 11:12

Phone Soak and Sleep. They are great.

LoafofSellotape · 28/07/2019 11:15

Extra deep Egyptian cotton fitted sheets from Viceroy bedding on line. Less than £20.

2 single duvets but with a big super king bedspread to look neat when it's made.

haggistramp · 28/07/2019 11:21

superking bed here too, never had the problems youre having. For bedsheets i buy next extra deep ones, they fit fine. Normal sheets end up pinging off at the corner. As for your duvet cover, makes me think that your duvet isnt super king size.

Murinae · 28/07/2019 11:21

We have emporer flat sheets from Dunhelm on our super deep super king size bed/mattress and two separate quilts.

wishingyouluck · 28/07/2019 11:23

We have never had that problem with our bottom sheet, but the duvet cover is a constant struggle. I thought it was just the weight of such a big duvet means it shifts about more.. but yes so annoying! I'm trying to figure out how I can attach the corners of the duvet to the inside corners of the duvet cover - also why is that not a thing?

FrenchyQ · 28/07/2019 11:24

We got extra deep fitted sheets from ebay and they fit perfectly. We use 2 double duvets instead of one super kingsize. That works better for us anyway as i tend to wrap myself in the duvet.

MoreSlidingDoors · 28/07/2019 11:37

You know those annoying ribbon loops that are put in the shoulders of tops for hanging? I cut those out and sew them into the internal top corners of duvet covers and onto the corners of the duvet. Then when I make the bed I can fix the corners together by tying a bow. I did it so that I could change the cover on my own (I’m 5’ 9”) but I suppose it keeps it in place whilst in use as well.

twistyturnycurlywhirly · 28/07/2019 11:51

We have a super king. We managed to get the correct sized bedding fromDunelm Mill.

TigerCubScout · 28/07/2019 11:53

Thanks ImogenTubbs.
We stayed in a hotel with a superking and it had 3 blankets on it - was very nice. One was a waffle and the top one was a nice striped one. It felt very luxurious.

stripeyronnie · 28/07/2019 11:59

I had the same issue with my bed- I tried about 5 brands of sheet and eventually found those by a company called soak and sleep which were deep enough.
