In short, my house has nosedived into an absolute bomb site. I have a few hours this afternoon to make a start on rescuing it, but super struggling with motivation! Thought maybe plonking it all down on here might help get me going. Do join with your own tales of owning this housekeeping shit! A mn pal or two to chat to along the way would be ace. Jobs 1-3 for me... 1) Clothes and washing. Clothes everywhere. Need to restore the system. 2) tidy my room. I'm not sleeping in it tonight either so the bed will stay made! And 3) Gather aaallll the dishes that have migrated into funny places thanks to three semiferral DC who think nothing of putting a cup on the edge of the bath or using a spoon to scoop out their bloody bloody pots of slime and leaving it to solidify on there.

I sorted all the laundry and put a wash on, hung up the stray clean clothes, changed my sheets, hoovered my bedroom, the landing and bathroom and cleaned the bathroom. Having a quick cuppa and going to tackle the dishes next. Not so many dishes as I imagined so shouldn't take long. Will swipe the worktops too, and a quick pickup downstairs of random items should restore enough order that I don't feel the paralysing overwhelm at least. Got tomorrow afternoon off so I'll smash through the rest then. I know I'm talking to myself here but this is helping!

Oh please can I join in?

House is also a bomb site /dumping ground. I keep longing for a two week window of no work and no DC to sort the whole thing top to bottom.

DD starts nursery this week so I'm hoping to use that time to tackle the housework. I think if I could sort the clutter out I'd have a good chance of keeping on top of the cleaning.

MikeUniformMike · 25/03/2019 17:14

IME the two week window doesn't work. Chop it into 10 min windows and it will. Right, I've got 10 mins...

RubySlippers77 · 25/03/2019 21:55

Oh blimey, I would love two weeks to get the house straight!! Or just two days really Grin

I'm a SAHM to twin boys (3) who are at preschool some of the week - but it only gives me two mornings a week to myself (for which read: get the cleaning done!). To be honest my house isn't that bad apart from the loft which is an utter shit tip, but I struggle to keep on top of things, it can quite quickly spiral into complete disgustingness and then I rely on DP taking the DC to PIL for a few hours so I can power through it.

DP is completely useless and helps not at all with the day to day stuff (major cause of arguments!); he is very good at moaning that the house is a tip, emptying a random cupboard and then leaving the contents everywhere, but will he clean the bloody bathroom?! No.

Anyhow, what has shocked me into joining a thread tonight is a mouse being seen in the kitchen Shock - I didn't see it, it was the DC, but the pest control chap has popped in and recommended a trap if we think it's still there in a day or two. In the meantime I'm trying to get the kitchen sparkling so DP can't moan about it yet again.

List of jobs still to be done, either tonight or tomorrow morning:

  • finish washing up/ stacking dishwasher
  • clean worktops
  • clean kitchen table
  • clean kitchen floor (ahhhh! My nemesis Sad)
  • hang out washing to dry
  • clean entrance hall
  • dust living room
  • dust bedroom

I seem to have successfully procrastinated for a bit - back to the cleaning for me!!

IVEgottheDECAF · 25/03/2019 21:56

I need this!

I will be back in the morning!

I need sleep first!

RubySlippers77 · 25/03/2019 23:07

Forgot - I need to add 'clean the bathroom' to my list, usually do it on a Monday but couldn't today. Obviously when I said the house wasn't that bad, I'd forgotten the 8 hours of work I needed to get it up to scratch Sad

IVEgottheDECAF · 26/03/2019 07:00

Woken up to a bomb site

We have 4 dc between 2 and 11, i am also 16 weeks pregnant with dc5 and have awful spd and sciatica.

First job today is find the kitchen....

Fluffiest · 26/03/2019 09:46

Hope you found the kitchen, Decaf!

Weird situation in my house this morning. DD came down with a sickness bug in the night. So I've got a poorly lamb and a ground mound of bedding and pyjamas to wash.

But it also means all our plans and errands are cancelled today and DD is going to be napping on the sofa. So, looking on on the bright side, I do have time to do housework today.

Here's the list:
Wash bedding
Wash dishes
Wipe coffee table
Tidy up lounge and dining room

OK, here I go!

IVEgottheDECAF · 26/03/2019 09:48

Operation kitchen was interrupted by life / dc / school run / shopping

Big 3 are all at school. Small one has fallen asleep in pram.

IVEgottheDECAF · 26/03/2019 09:49

Hope your dd ok fluffiest how old is she?

Fluffiest · 26/03/2019 10:43

She's three. She is wiped out but not too miserable.

I get the whole life getting in the way thing, and I've only got the one! Nevermind four!

Second round of washing is in the machine and I've washed the dishes.

DD wants a cuddle so I'm sat with her for a bit then I'm going to put recycling out and wipe down coffee table.

Fluffiest · 26/03/2019 10:51

And now she's fallen asleep on me. Tempted to just stay here and watch Gilmore Girls on Netflix!

ThreadKillerSleepsInACoil · 26/03/2019 13:11

Was just starting to see daylight here, then DH and I came down with the flu and a sickness bug. No DC, but 3 terriers in control of the house for 2 weeks destroyed it!

Only just starting to feel normal again now, after another 2 weeks Blush so you can imagine the chaos...

Managed to attack the worst of the kitchen on Sunday, tackling laundry mountain and cleaning the hall floor today. If I can stop procrastinating.

WhenDoISleep · 26/03/2019 13:17

I'm in, I keep doing bits but the whole house is just getting worse. I have 2 hours (just under) before school pick up so going to tackle a few things.

AdoraBell · 26/03/2019 13:21

Well done sorting the laundry 👍

My house is also descending in the pits of chaos and I’m currently one handed due to shoulder issue Hmm

flitwit99 · 26/03/2019 13:22

I love these sorts of threads. I have just over an hour before I have to leave for school pick up. I'm going to clear out the bookcase in the living room. Anything that hasn't been touched in a month needs to move off the shelf so I can fill the space with things we actually do use.

AdoraBell · 26/03/2019 13:25

That should have been well done getting laundry and other things done

SockPortal · 26/03/2019 13:29

Can I join?

My house is in chaos, I'm made the mistake of going to work full time, I've abandoned that idea and immediately my child caught chicken pox before thoughtfully infecting me with a related virus.

I feel shocking and can't wait to get my house back under control!

AdoraBell · 26/03/2019 13:38

Hope you and toddler recover quickly Sock

I did put towels away yesterday, we have loads because DH has hoarding tendency so I managed to leave them atop the washing for a fortnight without running out 🤦‍♀️

BiddyPop · 26/03/2019 13:45

Raising my hand for another in chaos here. I had yesterday off, and a list as long as my arm to tackle. But after very little sleep in a tent on Saturday night (there were enough beds but the layout meant I couldn't take one, nor could the 2 teenage Scout Helpers, so there were 2 tents out the back of the hostel for us, 3 adult male leaders in the only spare bedroom in hostel), those plans went adrift.

Because I only woke up at 5.30pm yesterday afternoon (and needed to collect DD from school at 5.45!). And I have a course on Monday nights, with the exam only 2 weeks away.

I have decided to take Thursday off now as well, and that will be my "get things done" day - cleaners are due in the morning so I will do my jobs away from home (various drops in different directions, paying bills etc) and then go home to tackle my bedroom, the dining room, the spare room and the freezer/fridge situation.....

Fluffiest · 26/03/2019 13:55

Yay, more company in domestically flummoxed group!

I am making little bits of progress today. I've just cleaned the bathroom whilst giving DD a bath. She no longer smells vaguely of sick so that's a win!

Time for another cuddle and brew, and then more tidying I think. I really wish I didn't have so much stuff. Sad

BrieAndChilli · 26/03/2019 14:05

wish id joined this thread before the weekend. my house was a complete tip and choas central.
As it was i spent the weekend sorting
i did:
loads and loads of laundry
tidies the pots and pans cupboard
washed down all the kitchen cupboard doors
bleached the sink (its cream and a nightmare for stains)
sorted the fridge out
sorted out the piles of crap on the kitchen table/chairs/bin area
dusted the lounge,
hoovered and swept all the floors
tidied the coffee table
got rid of the giant box fort by the dining table
sorted out the piles of craps everywhere
cleared the stairs from piles of crap
sorted out the kids rooms (which were a shaken showglobe of random stuff)
cleaned the inside of the windows
cleaned the bathrooms
sorted the school uniform wardrobe
ironed a basket of school shirts
tidied the porch and the shoes etc
washed the doors and walls going up the stairs

so feeling quite please as cant remember the last time the house felt so clean and tidy!
still need to:
sort the piles of crap in the study/get rid off/sell the bags of old toys clothes etc
clean the study
keep on top of the whashing/ironing/drying/putting away
change the beds

Also need to tackle the jungle of a garden at some point.
longer term the house needs knocking down and rebuilding redecorating but thats money dependant and the bigger things like a new bathroom/kitchen etc are up to the landlord and hes a skinflint.

SockPortal · 26/03/2019 14:36

After giving myself a nice soak in the bath with a lush bath bomb, I feel slightly more human.

Using the bath bomb means there is one less not used Christmas gift lying around. Hurrah! And I'm writing a list of things to do in the house.

Top 3

  • order the shopping
  • tidy master bedroom (foolishly having a new bed delivered later this week, it's an ottoman bed and will be great for storage hide all manner of crap)
  • put laundry away
ooItsAoBeautifulDayNow · 26/03/2019 14:38

A tip on MN helped me loads - never leave a room without picking up something that needs to go elsewhere. Don't know why but it made a big difference to my place!

frenchonion · 26/03/2019 21:32

Ooo yey! I'd abandoned this thread because I thought I was in a one man band of domestic fuckwittery! Too many to reply individually now but lovely to have company, my sympathies on the housework muddles but high fives all round for getting on it! Today I have made a huge dent in the embarrassing washing pile, mowed the lawn, sorted a load of crap and loaded the car for a tip run tomorrow between jobs (I'm a cleaner... the irony is not lost on me 😂) and de-moulded the kitchen which is a hotbed for the stuff. Feel like I've kicked ass!
