In short, my house has nosedived into an absolute bomb site. I have a few hours this afternoon to make a start on rescuing it, but super struggling with motivation! Thought maybe plonking it all down on here might help get me going. Do join with your own tales of owning this housekeeping shit! A mn pal or two to chat to along the way would be ace. Jobs 1-3 for me... 1) Clothes and washing. Clothes everywhere. Need to restore the system. 2) tidy my room. I'm not sleeping in it tonight either so the bed will stay made! And 3) Gather aaallll the dishes that have migrated into funny places thanks to three semiferral DC who think nothing of putting a cup on the edge of the bath or using a spoon to scoop out their bloody bloody pots of slime and leaving it to solidify on there.

I got stuck late at work and had a haircut booked for tonight. But I still managed to tidy 2 piles, off the kitchen table, pay a handful of bills and update a budget trackers, do a Garda vetting form (I think it's a DSB in UK) and comfort a DD who was inexplicably upset (bloom in' puberty hormonal .....stuff)! So some progress made...lots more to do though

RubySlippers77 · 26/03/2019 23:47

French I've thought about becoming a cleaner to fit in with childcare hours! Don't know how to start from scratch though? I did it years ago to fit round uni work but presumably that wouldn't count any more.

House is marginally tidier but I still need to:

  • clean entrance hall
  • dust living room
  • dust bedroom
  • clean kitchen floor Sad Sad
  • clean bathroom

But the rest of the house is relatively ok; even the garden was quite tidy till the DC played in it for ages this afternoon. Which was very nice except it included some random game involving littering plant pots everywhere...

Fluffiest · 27/03/2019 08:20

Good morning! Ready to start another day of bringing the house in to order?

My first priority is to do a food shop. But after that I really need to sort out the stuff and clutter that is everywhere.

Here's the plan. I'm going to work clockwise around each room, putting things away that belong in that room and putting things in piles that need to go to other rooms. Once I've been round the room I'll then go put each pile of things away. I'm hoping that will limit the amount of time spent wandering between rooms!

Mrsoh39 · 27/03/2019 13:31

I'm in too, I have a mountain of washing that needs putting away.

I'm off to put some washing on the line and empty the dishwasher, I sorted out the corner of doom in the kitchen the other day and I felt so much better for having done it.

Will read the thread once my 2 jobs are done.

MaroonFlame · 27/03/2019 18:36

Joining as managed to finally sort out my neglected house today! I dusted literally everywhere, hoovered the whole house and all the stairs, Cif’d the mould from my shower, grout etc. Just got a bit of clutter and clothes to organise now. There’s zero storage in my tiny house. No attic or cellar, not even a bathroom cupboard! It’s hard to create a space for everything but getting there. Well done to OP and everyone else for overcoming the messSmile

DoctorDread · 27/03/2019 19:16

Another in chaos too. Mainly because I work, am at uni and am also a single parent of three so something has to give.

Mrsoh39 · 27/03/2019 20:28

Got my jobs done, have polished and hoovered in the living room today, I think tomorrow I'll tackle under the stairs(again).

I don't seem to have much time now we have a puppy, she's adorable and cute but doesn't leave me much time for other things Grin

frenchonion · 28/03/2019 08:26

Reading replies, want to respond to some individual posts but will have to do later as rushing out for a job shortly, may get an hour or so at lunch to do a quick swizz and a tidy as job is local. My boys are playing over at a friend's house tonight so just me and my DD, so I'll have an hour or two later too. Hoping to put the millions of clean clothes amassed from my mega loads of washing away, plus small amount dishes which piled up from yesterday as had a really busy day and was only in the house long enough to shower and grab a quick bite to eat. Fridge needs attention as there's something smelly in there. Also going to make brownies with DD. Thursdays is always my big sort as boyfriend comes over on Friday and he's really clean and tidy so I try to mask my slovenly ways by doing a Thursday blitz! Good luck with the chores today everyone. Replies to follow!

Bags in car boot to drop at storage and charity shop
Chair in bedroom cleared of clothes (folded and hung/shelves neatly away)
1 load in machine, our sheets in front to follow - bed stripped

Cleaners due shortly to actually clean so I’m out doing my jobs
Then going home to tackle dining table, spare bedroom, put away rest of clothes from hot press, get all 3 loads laundry on line... and do a cupboard check followed by proper supermarket shop.

Also on list - homework for my course and making cake (serious glut of eggs!)
And a bath tonight

Fluffiest · 28/03/2019 09:22

Yesterday was a bit of a fail for me. Got a bad headache and couldn't bring myself to tackle the big tidy up.

But I did do the minimum of washing up, rubbish out, clothes wash and hoover. So at least the house didn't get worse!

I'm at work today and tomorrow so won't get a huge amount done.

But Saturday I really really am going to do a big tidy up! I may even get up early to do it!

RubySlippers77 · 28/03/2019 12:05

One load of washing done today, dishwasher has been run twice (meal prepping is great but leaves lots of washing up!), and living room has been dusted - another washload in and it can all go on the line once done. Still need to:

  • clean entrance hall
  • dust bedroom
  • clean kitchen floor
  • clean bathroom

Thought I'd got loads done today but not much off my list, it seems! Hoping to do some more once the DC are in bed and maybe in the hour I have free tomorrow.

However over the Easter hols I fully expect the house to turn into a disgusting hovel - I just get nothing done with the DC around - the week after will all be spent cleaning once they are finally back at preschool!!

BiddyPop · 29/03/2019 15:51

Progress was made yesterday - not on everything on my list, but also on organsing the chaos that is my Scouts resources. And 3 loads laundry done (2 line dried by last night) and another in the machine for hanging when I get home tonight. You can now see 1 bed in the spare room - the other will get there soon.

DH and I intend tackling the garden over the weekend, and also I will spend another while in the spare room.

One 15 minute hot spot boogie at a time.....

RubySlippers77 · 29/03/2019 21:34

Biddy we are laundry buddies!! I did more today too. Loving the good drying weather!

I still need to finish cleaning the kitchen floor - but have to have the back door open as otherwise the steam mop smell gets a bit overpowering - and dust the bedroom, but DP is in there at the moment and he's been an arse this evening, so I'm downstairs avoiding him Angry

Garden is tidy though as we have a dog coming to stay for a week from tomorrow. Hopefully she won't chew up too much stuff..... can't see how she can be messier than two toddlers anyway!!

DoctorDread · 30/03/2019 09:05

Mowed the lawn, cleaned bathrooms, hoovered and cleaned kitchen in spite on one of the dc having a birthday and me ending up in hospital with sepsis on Tuesday!

It's the paperwork that gets me. I'm swamped with the stuff!

DoctorDread · 30/03/2019 09:06

Oh and I put boxes in the loft and am just about to hang a load of washing out!

DemelzaPoldarksshinerrefiner · 30/03/2019 10:00

Doc for paperwork. Buy bull dog clips and arrange by needs to be dealt with by date. Urgent, this week, this month and waiting to be filed clips. I find a lidded useful ( its a brand in hobby craft B and. M etc ) box that has clips keeps it neater, stops it from sliding around/off surfaces and re shuffling itself in the process. On the lid I have car taxing, insurance renewal and mot dates.

Fluffiest · 30/03/2019 11:11

My progress is slower than I'd like it to be. DH hoovered stairs, hall and landing yesterday and did washing. And he reorganised a corner of the kitchen that looks a lot better now.

I've washed up and done a clothes wash this morning. Need to break off now to bake something for a tea party this afternoon, but I'm hoping to also do some tidying.

Again, I would love the freedom to have a day of sorting but real life gets in the way! Oh well, 15 minutes chunks it is!

SockPortal · 30/03/2019 11:18

I feel well enough to tackle the housework, hurrah!

Load of washing on, that can go on the line later. And today the end is in site for the master bedroom after our new bed has arrived.

DoctorDread · 30/03/2019 12:49

@DemelzaPoldarksshinerrefiner - brilliant tips! Thankyou

Easilyflattered · 30/03/2019 15:40

Can I join pls? I have two DC, one with ASD, and I'm about to give up my part time job to go full time. Given the house is never tidy when I work part time, I doubt it's going to get easier.

Today I've been tidying/sorting coats and shoes. I think part of the problem is we have too much stuff.

DoctorDread · 31/03/2019 12:53

Yes to too much stuff. I moved just before Xmas and was ruthless in getting rid of stuff. I still have more to go but it's better than it was and getting easier to keep tidy!

WhenDoISleep · 31/03/2019 23:03

I manage to find some motivation last week, but still didn't make the most of the time I had to get things done and ended up running around like a maniac after school on Friday as usual to get tidy in the kitchen / hallway for the weekend. Today I made a start on sorting out the DC's (shared) bedroom - not completely finished but a good start made. Hoping to crack on more with that tomorrow to get it into a reasonable state before deciding if I want to move the furniture around over the school holidays. Then I want to switch focus to downstairs (the stairs/hallway - I have new storage for shoes and hat/scarves, etc). Also going to try and fit in an Ikea trip as I found the perfect size storage for all my craft bits - I have 4 days before the DC break up for the holiday and I need to get as much sorted as possible.

SockPortal · 01/04/2019 09:04

I am hoping that someone here might have a suggestion for me. I'm looking for a large canvas bag/box which is made of stiff fabric, I want it for toy storage. Many thanks!

Today's plan is to tackle the living room and dining room/playroom.

WhenDoISleep · 01/04/2019 09:46

GLTC have rope baskets and I've seen them in quite a few other places.

WhenDoISleep · 01/04/2019 09:49

We have had canvas baskets in the past that haven't quite stood up to the continual use but the rope ones look a bit more robust.
