Stains underneath toilet seat

FriedFoodFreud · 24/03/2019 07:15

No idea what is staining the underneath front of the toilet seat. Pee splashing back up maybe, from DD sitting near the front.

Anyway, it looks awful but bathroom cleaners aren’t doing anything. What can I try?

Have you tried bleach? If so and that’s done nothing, then it’s a new toilet seat. Once they’re stained, it’s pretty hard to shift, if they’re wood or wood-product based.

Disfordarkchocolate · 24/03/2019 07:31

Bleach applied with a toothbrush and left 30 minutes before being wiped off. Done about once a week.

nunnun · 24/03/2019 07:42

IME there's no way to shift that unsightly brown haze on the underside of a toilet seat and no-one seems to know what causes it.

Get a new toilet seat and it doesn't matter what it's made of, after a while they all go the same way.

I had this problem. Bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar, mixed to a paste, left on for 30 mins then scrubbed with a pot scrubber worked brilliantly.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 24/03/2019 08:42

Just don’t look.

Train everyone to put the seat and lid down when they are done, more hygienic to flush with the lid down, and you don’t need to see it.

isabellerossignol · 24/03/2019 08:45

You need Vim scouring powder. They sell it in Savers and Poundstretcher and places like that. Its amazing stuff.

mommybear1 · 24/03/2019 09:45

Magic eraser

magimedi · 24/03/2019 10:07

Cam on to echo mommybear. Magic sponge - rip a bit of one off (they are 4 for £1 @ Wilko) wet it & rub & chuck it out.

Works like magic.

The magic sponges are also brilliant for getting limescale off shower glass.

Lots of suggestions, thanks! Think I’ll start with the bicarb and white vinegar and work up from there.

Biological washing powder

Take the loo seat off. Place it upside down in the bath. Dowse with water. Mix washing powder to a thick paste and smear over offending areas leaving a thick residue. Leave for as long as possible. Scrub with scourer. Rinse and repeat.

It's the only thing that works in this house!

forumdonkey · 25/03/2019 18:56

This stuff is amazing for under the toilet seat. I live with men-enough said. Literally, spray and leave a few minutes and it will disappear. No scrubbing or effort.

It's usually only about £1 and you can buy it from Poundland, B&M, home bargains etc

@FriedFoodFreud let me know what you think.

Some excellent tips on this thread, I’ve obviously given up too quickly in the past!

Todaythiscouldbe · 25/03/2019 19:19

forumdonkey I also live in a house of men. That stuff is amazing 😁

forumdonkey · 25/03/2019 21:19

@Todaythiscouldbe I'd spent years scrubbing, steaming and neat bleach but nothing comes close to Astonish mould and mildew blaster. Spray and it disappears before your eyes. I've always got lots of bottles in

Girlinstripedpyjamas · 25/03/2019 22:06

Easiest is a cream cleaner with the gritty bits in like Cif

CatsMother66 · 25/03/2019 23:30

I have this too and it smells like a urinal!!!! I make a paste with Vim and leave it for a while before wiping off. Agree with Isabelle, Vim is brilliant.

FriedFoodFreud · 26/03/2019 05:48

Do other mould removers work? I think I may have one in the shed.

Tealfrog · 26/03/2019 05:58

Cif cleaner - i buy the white one specifically for this - works a treat as pp said it is the grains that do it.

Lovelydovey · 26/03/2019 06:00

Brillo pad - job done!

stayathomer · 26/03/2019 06:05

This is an amazing thread! Hope some of it works for you, OP, going to try some myself!

forumdonkey · 26/03/2019 06:19

@FriedFoodFreud I've only ever used the Astonish brand so I'm not sure but it's worth a go.

Pixel99 · 26/03/2019 06:26

I'm going to try some of these. Thank you.

RuggyPeg · 26/03/2019 06:36

Me too 😁

Wasabiaddiction · 26/03/2019 07:58

I am going to try it too.

But had my life really come to the point where I am following a toilet seat cleaning thread? 😫
