Mattresses, Ikea?

Well I don't think my back can stand it much longer! It's taking me too much time to scrape myself out of bed in the mornings, & I scare DH with my wincing! The time has most definitely come, we need a new mattress!

I've heard decent things about the ikea ones and have thought about getting one from there, what's the verdict are they good? I prefer a medium firm, I need support! Meanwhile, it looks like the sofa for now!

We have an Ikea mattress. Got the firm one. I will admit initially it was like lying on concrete & I thought I’d made a terrible mistake, but it’s given enough to make it comfy whilst still being firm. 2 years on it’s still comfy.

youvegottobekidding · 15/03/2019 10:20

Is it this one, but in the form or is it the

Oops posted too early, is it this one (but in firm) or the Hovag or the more expensive one at £650?

Not sure if we should go firm or medium firm now. I think the one we have at the moment is medium firm, must of had it around 8 years at least.

I have the hovag and love it. It's the best mattress I have ever had. We got it and then moved, and then moved again. It's still comfy 2 years later and 2 moves.

stephn88 · 15/03/2019 10:29

Just got the king size hovag and for the price it's amazing! It's medium firm.

They come roll packed, so easy to transport, but need to leave them unrolled for like 72 hours according to the instructions before using it....

SleepyFlump · 15/03/2019 10:35

We've all got HYLLESTAD in firm. Best mattress ever!

greenelephantscarf · 15/03/2019 10:40

they always come up well in which (and which equivalent in other countries)
ours is 7 years old and still very comfortable.

We've had two failed mattresses from Ikea. The first one they swapped. The second (the replacement) they refunded and we went elsewhere.
There was a large gap of time between the failures and the replacement wasn't the same as the original.

Not all Ikea mattresses can be flipped. Many can only be rotated. I think this was key to our failure.

My advice would be to shop around.

iforgotwhatiwasgoingtosay · 15/03/2019 15:12

I never thought Id be one to say about expensive items I am a bargain hunter through and through, but I would never go back to a cheap mattress, we have a tempur and it was the best investment I've ever made.

iforgotwhatiwasgoingtosay · 15/03/2019 15:13

I also have a bad back (and hips) and its made a huge difference to my pain!

reallybadidea · 15/03/2019 15:24

Yes, I agree with the person who said about rotating rather than flipping. We got a mid-range double from IKEA about 6.5 years ago. Because it had a memory foam top, we could only rotate it rather than flip it and after about 4 years it developed two dipped areas where we lay. A spring also went where I sit on the edge of the bed to dry my hair. We passed it on to my parents who have put it in their spare room with a thick mattress topper on and it's ok for a spare bed, but I think it would have worn much better if we'd been able to flip it.

SpoonBlender · 15/03/2019 15:33

Not-flipping isn't an Ikea-specific thing, it's pretty much standard for hybrid sprung+memory foam mattresses.

Coldhandscoldheart · 15/03/2019 21:38

Sorry, busy day. I think it must have been hidrasund. But that looks very expensive. Maybe once we did have that much money. Bed frame only cost us sixty quid off gumtree tho, so I suppose it balances out.
It is a rotate not flip.

youvegottobekidding · 16/03/2019 12:57

So I checked out Argos, just in case & came across the Casper Essential one, it has amazing reviews, must admit I am quite swayed, or am I just buying into the hype?!

This ikea mattress is a Which Best Buy.

I’m tempted to get one for the dcs as a tester but the sheer cheapness is holding me back.....

ChishandFips33 · 16/03/2019 18:25

We have 4 IKEA mattresses (4 beds) - bought after chucking the Tempur out!!

Hovag firm was bought for DH bad back and was fab but too firm for me.

That went on the spare bed and we got the medium firm Hovag which is great for both of us.

On the other spare is a medium firm mattress with a layer of foam on top (could be Hyllestaad??) - this is my favourite so I often toddle in to that room when I want a really good nights sleep. DH is hot in bed Grin so it wouldn't have worked as the main mattress

We also have a very old foam single which is the most comfortable but not available anymore, sadly!

They have a 90day returns policy we were told by the sales guy and they donate returned mattresses to good causes I believe - no brainier really

Can recommend their pillows too

youvegottobekidding · 22/03/2019 11:28

Just to update:

We went to Ikea. We tried the Hovag, the firm we thought was too firm, DH wasn't overly keen. Then we laid on the Morgedal, the firm was exceptionally firm, so we laid on the medium firm - wow I could of fall asleep! DH & I agreed it was very comfortable. We then tried the Hyllestead, DH really like that, it was comfortable, but I just thought the Morgedal was that bit more comfortable. It's been two nights & so far so good, a bit weird as it's not as thick as our old mattress so we feel 'low' down but a 100% comfier! It's nice not to be hearing all the springs as well! Time will tell I guess!

OP posts:
TotalNoob · 22/03/2019 12:56

Interesting. Thanks for updating and giving a review as well! Can I ask if the morgedal smelt chemically at all?

youvegottobekidding · 22/03/2019 18:56

Well that's an interesting question that you asked, TotalNoob, as DH says he can smell something, yet I can not smell anything!

Another thing was, DH was already in bed, setting the alarm on the mobile phones, so he was facing away from me & I was just taking my hair bobble out, glasses off (the lights were off) & I got into bed. Then DH turned around & said 'What! when did you get into bed? Seriously I didn't feel you get in!' So basically he was saying that he hadn't noticed me getting into bed at all, there's no disturbance! And its not like I'm light as a feather either!

Ours is a medium firm ikea one and we had to buy an Eve topper. With that it's fine

Ohyesiam · 22/03/2019 19:02

Teen dd has an ikea mattress, I think the one you pictured above. It’s firm and REALLY comfortable. I’m for ever getting into her bed !

OccasionallyIncomplet · 22/03/2019 19:02

You spend up to 1/3 of your life laying on a mattress. Don't cheap out in an Ikea. Got to Benson, use their mattress analyser machine and get the best you can afford.

A great mattress is a life changer.

3out · 22/03/2019 19:08

We’ve got an Ikea frame, so we’re ‘stuck’ buying Ikea mattresses unless we buy a uk frame. Our Ikea mattress is really uncomfortable, but we can’t afford a new mattress at the moment unfortunately.

TotalNoob · 22/03/2019 20:24

@OccasionallyIncomplet well sorry to say but we can barely afford the cheapest one in Ikea, hence my asking the question, so maybe check your privilege before posting.
