Getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge Part 5

StealthNinjaMum · 01/10/2018 17:18

We’re still here!

For 4 threads a group of mumsnetters have been getting rid of just one thing a day. We’ve been throwing out, selling, recycling and giving our stuff away.

But we're still not finished.

Newbies are always welcome to join us. Just get rid of one thing each day and come back here to discuss your progress and get support when it gets hard.

purplefrog I used to but I had nowhere to keep them so I have thrown a load out. There are probably many more lurking somewhere.

I tried to upload The Most Boring Photo Ever and failed. After my last post I spent another half an hour going through stationery and crafts stuff and found 14 pritt sticks. They were in lots of drawers and are now all together in a drawer. It's progress albeit slow progress.

Put together a whole bag of old console games and binned 3 which were missing their discs.

Was a bit pained to throw out about 4 DVDs but realistically no one watches DVDs anymore it's all streaming

SandAndSea · 08/10/2018 22:51

I was just reading this feeling pleased with myself smug that I don't have any holiday leaflets. ... Then I remembered my pile from my recent holiday.

There's also a bag from a wedding fayre.

I haven't binned much today. I did make a cake to try to use up some ood flour though.

Gibble1 · 08/10/2018 22:52

DH has decluttered and cleaned the kitchen after work this evening and I have decluttered a few bags from the hallway and several piles of washing from the table.
When I get home from work tomorrow I will have more items to fold and put away and hope to get lots more stuff from the hallway put away.

SandAndSea · 08/10/2018 23:15

I almost binned the wedding fayre bag, but then I looked in it!

Bowerbird5 · 08/10/2018 23:50

I found another RBC random bag of crap and filed some and threw some. My paper and card recycling bag is nearly full.😀
I also gave away a t shirt, socks, a hat and a jigsaw yesterday.DD gave some beans and other food to her brother and her Instant pot today.
The daily decluttering is really good as you make sure something goes out.
I must admit to something coming in though. I bought a beautiful vase yesterday. I wanted it years ago and it was at a Christmas Fair at nearby village hall for £15 and I saw one for £30 recently so I had to have it and vases are useful.

Made some progress yesterday - took a car full of dismantled wardrobe to the tip along with a broken tower fan and some textiles (why did I still have my pillow and duvet from my bed when I was a teenager? I left home 20 years ago). Plus 5 bags went to the charity shop. I also had a max £1 selling fee offer on eBay which I only noticed yesterday lunchtime so I managed to get 11 things listed as buy it now items.

Also had someone come to quote for curtain tracks and curtains for the DC's bedrooms - very expensive. I have a local company coming to give me another quote later as well.

The room I'm clearing out is very nearly there - will try to contact the electrician later today to arrange for some new sockets to be installed.

DolorestheNewt · 09/10/2018 10:28

OK, this is the thread for me. What happened to the old me? (Got married, had one child, have never been the same since.)

WILL report back by 4pm with a list of things that I have binned today (pompoms, please, so that I feel I have to actually follow through).

(I know it's one thing at a time, but I'm including as much paperwork as I can bear to look at that just needs to be shredded as an item - it's clutter, right? And a list can be two things....)

SuzeD29 · 09/10/2018 10:32

Today I have someone coming to (hopefully) buy and collect a sofa and desk. I've bought new ones so it's not actually decluttering I guess 🤔

Thrown loads of paperwork for recycling and a carrier bag of junk which moved house with us for some reason

Todamhottoday · 09/10/2018 10:58

Hi all may I join in!

Im so pleased with myself as I have finally stared to shift unwanted clothes. So far done 3 runs to the Salvation army collection point with loads of mens clothes, shoes to the tip.

I got in touch with my local womens shelter and took 3 winter coats and lots of jumpers which were still in good condition, scarfs (woollen) gloves which were gifts but never worn.
Along with all the toiletries I have collected from hotels shampoos/conditioner etc as well as lots of sealed toothbrush/paste sets (I purposely pick them up to take) also while going through the bathroom cupboard found more soap that I can ever use along with boxes and boxes of unopened tampax etc, so they all went as well. Everything was gratefully received, I sometimes think these type of organisations are forgotten about. Please ladies think about this as well.

I am trying to do one draw/side of a wardrobe at a time so I dont get bogged down.

But I am struggling as to what to do with a load of cocktail/long ballgown type of clothes, had a quick look on ebay and say Coast stuff does not tend to go for very much, is it worth the bother? They are all in very good condition and really dont want to just give them to a charity shop and Im no-where near a shop that will sell on clothing.

Right off to do the draws under the bed!!!

Amdoingit · 09/10/2018 11:15

Hi , may I join ?!?! I’ve been reading your thread for about 2weeks now. Inspiring!!!!! I had so much junk EVERYWHERE. Made such a dent in it it’s awesome. Grin[ If it’s not nailed down it’s not safe!!

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 09/10/2018 11:16

While home for a visit, DS sorted out some old university belongings and cleared a big box from our loft, which was really appreciated. Smile

PawneeParksDept · 09/10/2018 11:18

Throwing out some random advertising junk that has piled up and sending a jigsaw I'm never going to do to charity.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 09/10/2018 11:25

Todamhottoday that is a good point about donating practical stuff to local organisations.
Regarding the cocktail dresses and ballgowns, I reckon it is worth the bother of Ebaying especially when party season starts but make sure you calculate postage costs you'll be sending them well wrapped i imagine.

StealthNinjaMum · 09/10/2018 11:48

Go Dolores go Dolores go go go!

Todamhottoday welcome. Did you look at 'sold' prices on eBay rather than the items for sale? I have bought clothes on ebay that have suddenly escalated at the last minute. I have to say that I wouldn't buy Coast on ebay because I find the sizing inconsistent. You could always try on facebook so that someone could try them on first. Also you might find as it heads towards party season more people will be interested.

I am still sorting out crafts and stationery. I have piles of postit notes in a drawer now and about 70 lead pencils that my friend has suggested I give to her friend's school. I probably have at least 100 biros too. I'll be testing them and chucking a load out later. I have also found some big toys to sell so have put them on Facebook.

SandAndSea · 09/10/2018 12:01

Lovely to see more new members! Welcome everyone! Smile

My item today is an old brandy glass. I've got my eyes on the wedding fayre bag too - its days are numbered. I just need to copy down some contact details then it can go. It's been hanging around my dining room for ages (over a year) so it's definitely time it went. It's daft things like this which are my main clutter. In future, I need to just take photos of the flyer and not the flyer itself.

I also want to sort out all my small electricals and put them in one place. Since moving all my bags into one drawer (my new 'bag drawer') I have some space in another drawer - I think I just need to move a few things around. Then I won't need to buy a new cupboard to replace the mouldy one. That's the plan anyway.

Marcipex · 09/10/2018 12:23

May I join please?
Last week I gave a bag of books to charity.
Today I threw out some old painting equipment and my eyelash curlers that I don't have enough eyelash for.

SandAndSea · 09/10/2018 12:27

Course you can, @Marcipex. Welcome!

ememem84 · 09/10/2018 12:54

I’ve bought more stuff. But temporary like. Toiletries and such which will get used.

stealth the postits and pens etc could you keep and then just not buy anymore?

I took the majority of our stationery into work.

One of the ladies I work with sponsors an African school child and we save up all the free pens from conferences etc and when we have enough send them out to the charity.

PawneeParksDept · 09/10/2018 14:40

Also managed to put 4 books in Charity bag and I find books very hard to throw out

Keiki · 09/10/2018 14:53

Last night I put all the wrapping paper rolls I could find into one of the new storage boxes. Stuffed full, but now I can see and find it all easily so I'll know not to buy any more! Lots that I had totally forgotten about. Just need to work on the rest of the cupboard so I can put it all away. Maybe later, life has gone crazy at the moment.

PurpleFrog · 09/10/2018 15:09

I listed 3 new items on eBay last night and re-listed another. I also sorted out some more old magazines which are now in a crate in the porch for adding to the paper recycling bin.

I've just looked back at the 2nd thread which I joined in March. I can't believe that some of the things I did in March were done so long ago. I had really hoped to get on top of everything in 2018, but I now realise that 2018 is slipping away. Sigh!

For this month, I think I really need to try and do at least an hour every evening, with much more at the weekend.

RaspberryBlonde · 09/10/2018 15:17

Have been lurking on this thread a bit but think I need to join in properly. I've been trying to do TOMM recently but have been finding that I spend most of the time tidying rather than cleaning, so am helping that decluttering will help.

I am a bit of a hoarder, as is DH, and have two DC. The second is only a baby so is only going to generate more stuff in future!

Keiki are the paper boxes with the money? I keep thinking about getting one. I also keep used wrapping paper if it comes off intact. I do use it but it's stored in a very messy way. I may have to stop myself from keeping lots this Christmas although have already talked to DH about reducing the stuff we give to each other this year.

Have not done much today, got rid of a few free magazines of the code table as it's our recycling collection tomorrow. Hopefully I can find something else this evening though!

Hatstand · 09/10/2018 15:39

Dropped off a bag at the charity shop today. Making progress!

Hatstand · 09/10/2018 15:59

Oh, and put two 2017 calendars in the recycling. Why did we keep these? Why did we have two? It's a mystery.
