Getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge Part 5

StealthNinjaMum · 01/10/2018 17:18

We’re still here!

For 4 threads a group of mumsnetters have been getting rid of just one thing a day. We’ve been throwing out, selling, recycling and giving our stuff away.

But we're still not finished.

Newbies are always welcome to join us. Just get rid of one thing each day and come back here to discuss your progress and get support when it gets hard.

Omg I only bought my handbag this season - so 2 maybe 3 months ago tops. Among other things it has 19 pens, 3 identical lipsticks, 16 loyalty cards, 4 expired cards, 2 actual useful bank cards and some tampons that are so scruffy they would probably give me an infection if I used them!

Please tell me I am not the only person with a bag like this.

That’s pretty impressive stealthninja! My car looks the same after a short amount of time.

Just watched the first of consumed on Netflix, it made me cry. Really shows that decluttering is not just about the stuff and the positive impact having less can have.

SandAndSea · 05/12/2018 17:51

19 pens???!!! That's a lot of pens, Stealth. Grin I bought quite a small bag this year and it's kept me organised. Might be an idea for you?

StealthNinjaMum · 05/12/2018 18:51

It is small! You wouldn't believe it. I am forever shoving shopping lists and to do list in my bag with 2 or 3 pens assuming that the first two will dry out.

Had dropped off due to family illness but did manage some bits this week. Two eBay sales posted. Spice drawer sorted about 15 jars emptied and recycled😱

Gibble1 · 05/12/2018 22:38

I have got rid of two more printed mugs today and a trainee 😀. My first trainee as a training advisor has been signed off everything he needed to complete to earn his wood badge as a beaver leader and I am so pleased for him 😁⚜️

Chunkymonkey123 · 06/12/2018 01:28

Congratulations gibble!

Three more boxes today and 8 books for charity. Also found 3 ‘free books’ like the national trust book that have gone in the recycling,

So much to do and DP is threatening to get the tree etc out of the loft today, to put it up tomorrow - eek! I'm not nearly ready!

We have also continued our theme of accidental decluttering - he's done something to the tv and deleted all my saves on there. All my Youtube, minimalism and yoga videos, everything! On the plus side, it's one less thing to organise.

A couple more tops are also going out.

TofuPanda · 06/12/2018 14:13

Thanks for the welcome iwill
I have been adding things to my charity trolley. (I find bags just disappear under piles of things and then just get absorbed back in.) It’s one of those tiered metal ones. My mum used to keep vegetables in something similar but I just use it for recycling etc.
I’m thinking about going into the attic tomorrow and getting the decs down for Saturday but really I need to sell my old washing machine to make room. It’s currently in the way in the kitchen and I need to move something from the lounge into the kitchen to make room for the tree. So maybe I’ll wait, and post the WM elsewhere to get more views.
A friend is coming for coffee on Saturday and she will take the charity stuff for me, which is lucky. All the ones in my nearest town are difficult to park nearby and I’m at risk of bumping into my ex too and I could do without that.

StealthNinjaMum · 06/12/2018 16:34

Great to hear everyone's so busy. I didn't do much, mainly housework and shopping. I have thrown away 3 children's CDS with missing inlay cards and half cases that no one even wanted for free. I also bought some wine for presents and used two paper wine carriers. I'm pleased because I think it was last week when I tidied all the wrapping paper, ribbons, bags etc and today was the first time I went to my stash. Normally I buy the bags with the wine because I don't know what I have at home or where it is.

Today's thing is a storage box I gave to a friend.

Sorry to hear about all the accidental decluttering of cars, TV etc. I've picked up a puncture so will be joining you!

Have not got a many toys out as I hoped ahead of DD's birthday this weekend and we are going to be busy with activities for her the next couple of days so doubt I'll be getting much done apart from removing party bags! Have also managed an empty shampoo bottle and a couple of cardboard boxes.

Tofu I love the sound of your charity trolley! My mum also had one for fruit and veg when I was growing ng up.

Today's item is an audio book.

I've done a big charity shop run today too. It feels so freeing to have got rid of so much.

I was doing so well, then my mum brought over a big bag of kids books. DD has more than enough, so they’re going to the children’s wing of the hospital on Monday.

Today all I managed was a few broken Xmas decs and some lights that don’t work.

I have my car back 😁.
All I decluttered today was gallons of filthy foul smelling water by vaxing the lounge and dining room. Downstairs now stinks so I very much hope the smell goes by tomorrow and it dries out. Heating is on to dry everything out.

StealthNinjaMum · 08/12/2018 18:24

Old toy with missing parts and instructions in the bin. It was cheap in a charity shop and I thought I'd be able to get bits from eBay and the instructions online but when I finally got round to it last week I couldn't find them.

SandAndSea · 08/12/2018 19:10

Another DVD for charity.

StealthNinjaMum · 09/12/2018 10:17

A big item in the pile today. We had a toy box and a child stepped on it and broke it a few months ago. It had stuff stacked on it but that's been moved into a newly emptied bookcase so now it can go. I am hoping to go to the dump next week with the electrical stuff I have recently mentioned and this toybox.

SandAndSea · 09/12/2018 19:18

I've been through one of my boxes today! It's actually a largish, fancy tin which was full of cards, letters, docs and even an old school book (which didn't belong in there).

I've thrown out quite a bit from it. The box/tin is now properly organised with keepsakes, with room for more to be added on an ongoing basis.

I've also made gift tags from some of the old cards and put them away with my wrapping stuff.

But, my bed is now a mess of random bits which I have to find other homes for.

Gibble1 · 09/12/2018 20:42

Went to a table top sale today and sold a large boxful of mugs etc so that is one less box for me to keep in the house 😀. DS made £180 today which is amazing so we are now down to just over £650 still to raise. Doubt we’ll sell much more now as it’s nearly Christmas so hopefully his other fundraising bits and pieces will do well 🤞
