Getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge Part 5

StealthNinjaMum · 01/10/2018 17:18

We’re still here!

For 4 threads a group of mumsnetters have been getting rid of just one thing a day. We’ve been throwing out, selling, recycling and giving our stuff away.

But we're still not finished.

Newbies are always welcome to join us. Just get rid of one thing each day and come back here to discuss your progress and get support when it gets hard.

greenwillow I have the same issue with socks but have noticed that my DH’s Pringle socks stay soft and thick so I’ve asked for some for Christmas. Hopefully the women’s ones are equally as good.

gibble sorry if I’ve missed this but what is it you are selling at the market?

Today I have thrown away two yellow plastic drinks bottles. Yesterday was one old bra. I have about 20 virtually identical bras that I need to try on really and then slim down my collection but can’t be bothered to spend the time atm. Same with tights, I have a whole drawer full and I suspect that most are not in good condition but I only wear them to work in winter so don’t have to worry for another year (yay!)

ememem84 · 01/12/2018 10:41

Emptied bins and have ditched a top today. And dh’s slippers. They hum. Luckily I know Dm is buying him some new ones for Christmas so he only has to have cold feet for a while!

Well I have been running around lots and trying to diet and do housework for mil visit and have decluttered 4lb!

Mil was too polite to tell me the lightbulb in her room had gone but I know she'll be thinking I am a crap wife and mum. The lightbulb I put in just now was a spare one that had been sitting on my dressing table for two weeks since an electrician replaced it with spotlights so while I haven't yet got the old one out of the house i no longer have a working lightbulb just sitting on a surface.

4lb! That’s amazing!

Did your MiL get ready for bed etc. in the dark rather than say something because that’s bonkers?! In our house lightbulbs is a blue job so I would blame DH.

3 too small packs of nappies going to a friend this afternoon.

I have saved about 6 amazon boxes as I plan to eBay stuff soon and will need boxes to pack in but now thinking of just recycling them now as I probably won’t get round to ebaying for a few months and will probably get more boxes before then.

RaspberryBlonde · 01/12/2018 19:22

Hope things went well at the market Gibble and nothing ended up coming home.

Chunky you have reminded me that I need to organise to see a friend that I have promised some too small nappies to, best get a move on before her baby outgrows them too. I took one pack to the food bank but these have been opened.

GreenWillow I have still not done the stuff for the toy bank. The collection closes this week so I need to sort it!

Today’s item was my old umbrella. DH made me get rid of it as he wants me to use the new one he bought me. I was saving it until the old one actually broke but it was looking very tatty to be fair.

StealthNinjaMum · 02/12/2018 11:44

I called mil and it seems like the lightbulb must have gone just after she left she won't be telling her friends how awful I am! she probably will

Have put a biggish salad spinner in the charity shop pile with some fish tank decorations. I got dh to test a topfield digital recorder that hasn't worked for years. I had recorded lots of programmes I loved but we're not going to get them back so it needs to go. We also have two videos so I am going to ask dh if they work and then give them away. Back in July I was going to give one to a lady who's brother with autism loves them but dh hasn't got round to testing them! I'll ask him to do that today.

Forgot to say I chucked two twenty year old bottles of vodka down the sink. I tried to clean with them and it didn't work. I also have three old bottles of baileys (2 to 5 years old). Not sure if I should throw them away. Probably should.

StealthNinjaMum · 02/12/2018 13:37

Am I the only one left with a cluttered house?

30 videos are going to our local charity shop. Dd1 wanted to keep 2 and dd2 and dh were happy for them all to go. I have ordered DVDs for dd1 to replace the two that have gone. Also 7 seasons of friends on DVD are going?

Omg I have been doing this for two years and it's still the tip of the iceberg! (We have a ridiculous amount of storage so you would never know we owned this much stuff.)

I’m having a monster declutter in the kitchen today. Decided we do not need 4 million cut up rags for cleaning cloths. Out they go! Cupboards next!

SandAndSea · 02/12/2018 14:15

@StealthNinjaMum - No, you're not alone. I'm just having a break from it this weekend but will be back on it soon.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 02/12/2018 14:31

I recycled some kitchen implements, they were good condition but duplicates so I never used them.

I need to sort out the pantry and organise everything (hoping to find a bottle of extra-virgin olive oil before I go off and buy some)

Waiting for the builders to arrive for the first if 4 days decluttering the rising damp. Had a busy weekend clearing the entire downstairs to this end, so not much time for decluttering. I did however have to empty the bookcase and put 11 books in the charity shop pile as a result.

StealthNinjaMum · 03/12/2018 10:20

Can't mumsnet much as our phone line is down so waiting for dh to sort it out. It means I'm posting from my phone which is so frustrating I might not post for a couple of days after this.

I have done an unbelievable amount of decluttering yesterday. I have organised my wardrobe. All my clothes that don't fit are in boxes on the top shelf which is a lot clearer. I have only thrown out a few items of clothing but I am sticking to the diet. I love my clothes and I want to fit into them. I have also thrown out lots of papers. We have a huge pile now of electrical stuff to go, papers, videos, DVDs, kitchen stuff. I log what I do in terms of carrier bags of clutter and I think I have about 12 bags of clutter to go in my hall.

I have to wait in for deliveries today so am intending to give the house a thorough tidy before school pickup time.

Hope the phone's sorted soon StealthNinjaMum! I always end up getting more stuff done when the internet's down, and vowing to be more productive, but it never lasts.

A good few things have left the house this week, which feels great. One of the in-laws always turns up with a stack of gifts for DD (2), and inevitably some of them never get used or played with. So a heap of them (new) have gone to the local hospital's Christmas toy appeal.

Two flashlights are going to a local volunteer group - that still leaves 4(!) torches but they're good quality Maglite ones and DH won't countenance getting rid of them.

Decluttered the toybox and used sticker/colouring books and freebie happy meal plastic toys have gone in the recycling bin.

Found some wood flooring samples from when we did the floor and tried to bin them without DH noticing, but he salvaged them. Not really sure why...

Also a few minor successes this week of using what I have, rather than buying extras - turned one of DD's old muslins into hankies and decanted some body lotion into a jar to keep in the office instead of buying more handcream. Baby steps...

SandAndSea · 03/12/2018 11:36

Well done, everyone!
Wow Stealth! 12 carrier bags is really impressive

My items today are 2 pillows.

whatamessitallis · 03/12/2018 12:46

Poking my head round the door to say hi. I have a lot of decluttering to do!

PurpleFrog · 03/12/2018 12:57

The mattress went on Saturday!

I also got round to doing a 3-hr job which I had been putting off for months. The results were that I "got rid of" a large item that had been sitting in the corner of the kitchen, and produced a half bin bag of rubbish to go to the tip with the mattress.

I also had a low combined offer for the 3 batches of magazines I had on eBay. Since I had decided that they were destined for the paper bin this week if they didn't sell anyway, I agreed to it and re-listed them as one lot. So, I dropped off a 10.5kg parcel at the local Hermes parcel shop yesterday! I also managed to list 3 new things last night.

I'm still planning on a Charity shop drop this week and have given myself the next 2 evenings to prepare.

@whatamessitallis - Welcome! Good to see you've joined us. Grin

RaspberryBlonde · 03/12/2018 13:33

Welcome @whatamessitallis, I saw your thread over the weekend, you are in the right place here!

Made it to the toybank this morning so that's a bag of stuff gone. Now going to search for the DS's raincover which was decluttered from my car by DH despite belonging in there and has now disappeared. Its pouring down here so this is bad timing!

tofupanda · 03/12/2018 14:13

Hello, newbie here. Not sure if I don’t have enough storage or I have too much stuff. I suspect the latter. Can I join you before chaos of Christmas starts?

RaspberryBlonde · 03/12/2018 15:26

So, raincover is nowhere to be found, I suspect it may have been left behind somewhere over the weekend. On the upside I gave my changing bag a good declutter looking for it!

Another big pile of DD's 'artwork' has also gone into recycling.
