Getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge: Part 4

StealthNinjaMum · 06/07/2018 14:14

And the decluttering continues…

For 3,000 posts we have been slowly transforming our homes from hovels to palaces.

We’re not quite there yet some of us are further than others but we won’t give up until we have a decluttered existence.

We just get rid of one thing a day and report back to showoff for support and to be told off when we’re naughty and bring more clutter back into our homes, gardens, sheds, garages.

As ever newbies are welcome to join us.

Hi Bob

Have you seen the amazon moving packs? They are very reasonable and include tape, bubble wrap and boxes - I wasn't able to beat their price anywhere locally.

Nofilter · 09/07/2018 12:23

Congrats on new glasses stealth sounds fab! Do you do a fresh to do list each week / do you find your list grows a bit crazy if you are not careful and it's best to have some rules around it? IE only put on what can be completed within 7 days etc mine has grown again this morning by 5 things and think it's defeating the purpose!

StealthNinjaMum · 09/07/2018 13:32

Thanks SandandSea I need to work out how to organise our first aid cupboard. It sounds like you have more stuff than me but my shelf is so high up I need a chair to get to it. Will google trays that I can pull out.

Nofilter I don't do lists every week but I probably should as it does motivate me. I always knew last weeks was ambitious and I probably wouldn't do it all. This weeks is ambitious too.

I have decluttered the veg drawer. I have made myself soup and dh a sort of ratatouille with left over courgettes, tomatoes and aubergines. I have done my food order too. I have started a new list. I am going to try to get off mumsnet now and not return until I have done some more!

I went back to my medicine cupboard and binned some more. (Ood creams etc.)

I've advertised some more stuff for sale and actually had some interest this time.

I've also sorted out some more books, but I'm not yet 100% committed to that.

I've cleared out a bedroom drawer and started dinner.

Basically, I've done everything possible to avoid sorting out the dreaded 'boxes of doom'.

socraties1234 · 09/07/2018 16:55

I have decluttered 91 things pieces of junk including mostly of plastic toys, Christmas cards batteries old clothes and donated decent toys to charity. it is a great feeling to have more space and empty space. it gives me a buzz I feel proud.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 09/07/2018 17:21

gibble make sure you check the value of the game boy games some are very sought after and sell well on eBay.

I don't have a medicine cupboard I just have a box with everything jammed in.... must sort it out and organise it better.

This month I'm trying not to buy loads of food shopping and use up what we have in the house. My cupboards and freezer are full so lots of dinners in there. The saving will help with summer holiday days out.

Over the weekend I decluttered 8 dresses that were too big and a dressing up costume that dd2 has outgrown. Today I'm going to start on the dreaded under stairs cupboard....

bobgoblin · 09/07/2018 21:54

A very successful day. The dining table and top of the sideboard are clear. Lots of paper for the recycling and a lot of stuff that just needed putting away in the right place. While I was putting something away I found a few CDs in the drawer that were free with newspapers or magazines years ago. I didn’t even know I had them so they’ve gone as well.

Lots of bits gone from the hall - 3 coats, 3 outgrown sun hats, a random glove and a scarf. I fixed the shoe cupboard and found yet another pair of shoes to go. DD helpfully emptied my purse while I was doing that so I sorted it out and got rid of a lot of receipts that were shoved in there. There’s a huge pile now for the charity shop so I’ll try and drop it off this week so it’s all definitely out of the house.

Nofilter I’ll have a look at those moving packs - thanks for the tip! I’ve got some bubble wrap on the way so I can make a start and I’ll try and work out how many boxes we might need,

I haven’t quite decided what to tackle tomorrow but I know I need to keep going. I’m terrible for having a really productive day then doing nothing else for the rest of the week.

Tidy2018 · 09/07/2018 22:25

Stealth - to clean the moss out between paviers, I get down on my hands and knees and run along the joins with a narrow stick from my laurel prunings. The moss is so dry just now that it's lifting in big chunks. It sounds incredibly tedious, so a good podcast is company, or a few minutes during adverts. Then it sweeps up with a soft brush.

Tidy2018 · 09/07/2018 22:54

Sunday declutter - much weeding at the front, which is looking a lot better now, with the end in sight.

Taken to tecycling centre -

Old music keyboard
Broken ghetto blaster
Broken hedge trimmer
Broken power drill

Gibble1 · 09/07/2018 23:00

Thanks for the tip nocuts. I will keep working on him. He hasn’t sold it today but has been offered £45 in vouchers or £15 in cash so I’ll let him get the vouchers but he needs to hang onto them for a little while.
I have made him get out of bed to tidy his bedroom tonight as he had scattered bits of rubbish all over the room again 😬.
DH and I have printed 5 mugs, 4 enamel mugs and a bottle tonight and all are packed and ready to go. Best friend wants to order an enamel mug tomorrow. That’s a bit more space and £57 towards his jamboree fundraising. I think he now has November’s payment covered.

Gibble1 · 09/07/2018 23:01

Oh also got rid of a hoopla and have put a bag of educational bumpf on heated humidified nasal high flow oxygen to take into work tomorrow for one of the anaesthetists.

Tidy2018 · 10/07/2018 05:56

Monday's efforts. More weeding and scraping. Used Weedol on the stubborn weeds that grow in the spaces of the wall. By the evening they were clearly dying. The wholewall needs repointed; don't know whether I coild manage that myself.

After putting the first of the magazine stash in the recycling bin last week, I found it much easier to go into the garage and pick up a pile of the 1980s stash in there and put them straight into the bin for tiday's collection. I'm thinking of quietly putting some in neighbouring bins this morning before collection, buy I'm pribably not brave enough.

In the evening I went through a pile of "useful information" cuttings and refuced it by about half - filled a cereal box. Found mysef thinking that I should start using the internet for that, but not ready for that just yet.

GreyCloudsToday · 10/07/2018 09:16

Sounds like you all have been extra productive.

I went into labour after finishing my sideboard, and brought home a beautiful baby boy yesterday Star. He's a bonny 8lbs 15oz chunk even though a week early. Still going to try to finish my big cushion and keep on with the last bits of DIY and decluttering, albeit much more slowly!

Lots going on here, so exciting to hear about all these house moves Nofilter, NommyChompers and bobgoblin.

Congratulations GreyClouds! Lovely news! ThanksCakeBrew

StealthNinjaMum · 10/07/2018 13:45

Congratulations GreyClouds! A lovely, snuggly newborn.

tidy thanks I was hoping you would be able to make me buy a magic gadget that makes it no effort! I think I'll scrape the moss off in the holidays. It's the sort of things dds could help with.

I haven't done much today - well haven't really achieved much but I've been working hard. I have been sorting through a few toy sets with a view to selling them. I have sold one Duplo set, all pieces complete and with its original box, but just want to sell some other sets tomorrow and Thursday. But there always seem to be missing bits and I know they'll turn up after I have sold the item for less than I would get if it was 'perfect'.

I might be being slowly tortured to death by people messaging me, "Is it still available?" Then asking loads of questions which are in the ad ("How much is it?" etc) and then not being able to collect it anyway.

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 10/07/2018 16:10

I only lurked on here for 5mins this morning to get motivated and I've hardly stopped since. We have guests coming in a few weeks so need to get respectable.

I took several bags to charity, mainly clothes and books and quite a bit went in the bin.

Some easy pickings under the kitchen sink-crusty, mouldy cloths and strange bits of plastic which came with the dishwasher and I never used.

I sorted dhs sports stuff out so it's all easy to find- he'll either love it or hate it. I'm hoping he'll love it and he will get sorting stuff out too.

SandAndSea · 10/07/2018 16:20

@IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying - Well done and welcome to the thread!

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 10/07/2018 16:24

SandsandSea Thanks! I need to keep up the momentum. I warned my teenagers today that if they aren't beautiful or useful they're out WinkGrin

Lovely about the baby too!

SandAndSea · 10/07/2018 16:59

I've sold something! Ker-chiing!!

Nofilter · 10/07/2018 17:25

Congratulations grey wow!! Enjoy and I hope you get some rest too xx

Really productive day working through my list.

Completed 9 out of 25 things. Lots of admin calls etc

Gathered another bin bag last night too, more toys, old DVDs, kitchen items, old dog brushes and towel, boiler cupboard bits, went through the bedding and threw away the stuff that no longer matched.

Sorted car boot and found my dogs coat I was searching for when it was cold!

Cold? Distant memory that!!

Have a nice day everyone xx

Tidy2018 · 11/07/2018 05:39

Tuesday
Cooler today, so into the garage to start on magazine hoard. Put stacks of them on shelves to make it easier to grab a few at a time for the new and very small paper bins we have been issued with.

Also some tidying in order to see what's in there. Need to decide to mend or dispose of furniture. Also need help moving items that I used to be able to move on my own.

Weather forecast says showers. Most of the evening I scraped pavier moss during ads, then in real earnest due to the weird smell that comes before some types of rain.

Decluttered to recycling about four years of magazines up to 1992.
