Getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge: Part 4

StealthNinjaMum · 06/07/2018 14:14

And the decluttering continues…

For 3,000 posts we have been slowly transforming our homes from hovels to palaces.

We’re not quite there yet some of us are further than others but we won’t give up until we have a decluttered existence.

We just get rid of one thing a day and report back to showoff for support and to be told off when we’re naughty and bring more clutter back into our homes, gardens, sheds, garages.

As ever newbies are welcome to join us.

Previous thread here.

Tidy bonus points for tidying small toys. I have spent many hours and hours tidying bloody toys.

We got invited to a friend's house for a playdate so dds had minimal opportunity to trash the house. So while putting washing away I've gone through dd2s wardrobe and put 3 tops, 1 dress and 1 pair of trousers into the charity shop pile. I also cleared the window ledges in the kitchen. I always feel better with clear window ledges and so I chucked out a couple of random plastic bits that had broken off something else, put away some pencils, put a 'thank you' card into the shredding pile and put a couple of other bits in the right place. I also did a bit more sorting through the post and in a minute have some shredding to do.

My main visible mess in the house at the moment (as opposed to the stuff shoved in cupboards and rooms that visitors aren't allowed in) is the school books and art work that that dds brought home at the end of term. They're in the hallway and dining room and I will move them but every year I put them in the room of doom and at some point I need to organise them. I don't mind keeping some bits but don't really know what. I wonder if I'll have the energy to look through some of them tonight of course I won't I'm too lazy.

Hows tonight going everyone anyone decluttering or is it chill time?x

Halfahunnerstillastunner · 06/08/2018 21:25

Hi betsy I remember your name from reading the previous threads!

I have cleared and cleaned another cupboard in the kitchen this evening. 2 jars of Nutella that had been scraped out to nothing then put back for some reason (DH? DS? They are as bad as each other Hmm) are now soaking in my sink before recycling.

I've also gone through one of my drawers (my "fitness" drawer lol I'm fat and 50 Grin) and put a yoga top, pair of leggings I never liked as they always rolled down and a tshirt into the charity pile. Hoping to make a bit of room to move some tops from my next overflowing drawer!

lljkk · 06/08/2018 22:25

Box of toys posted today (Ebay sale).
I have about 30 picture frames I am finally organising to get at least some to charity shop this wk/end

Gibble1 · 06/08/2018 23:12

3 envelopes of badges packed tonight to be posted in the morning. Person who was supposed to come and buy boots didn’t appear 😬. Quiz tickets taken and dropped off and deposits for a day out dropped to ADC Cubs.
Bike locks put in hallway for return tomorrow. If accepted, I will then be able to hand over receipts for cub camp and it will all be signed off.
Decluttered all my money from my purse into DS’s jamboree tub. Total is going down. Under £1000 to go thankfully.

Hi @Betsy86
do you know how to save threads in your Watch list? Smile

PenelopeFlintstone · 06/08/2018 23:57

Welcome back Stealth - I'm amazed and impressed at you not Mumsnetting while on holiday.

Betsy86 · 07/08/2018 01:10

Penelope no idea how to do that but going to investigate now! Use my really old phone to mumsnet and its no joy lol. Thread eould normally always show up in my ‘im on’ section but vanished. Not going to lose it this time!

Betsy86 · 07/08/2018 01:12

Hi to you also Smile

Sunrise888 · 07/08/2018 01:18

I could use some decluttering support. We are moving tomorrow, so I did a small amount of decluttering of DS' things, then lost steam and packed up everything else! The contents have already been moved (doing furniture and ourselves tomorrow) so I am considering another round when unpacking!

PenelopeFlintstone · 07/08/2018 01:19

Betsy86, on my screen at the bottom, it says
Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google - all in bright colours.
Then under that it says Start a New Thread, Watch this Thread etc.
Click on the word Watch.
Then hover at the bottom right of the last post you've read in that thread. You should see the word Bookmark appear. Click on that too.
Yours might be different though, as this is on my laptop. Good luck!
(It's good because you can watch threads that you haven't actually commented on.)

lljkk · 07/08/2018 08:24

Sunrise, most my decluttering is after I move house & start unpacking. A moment of "OMG, why did I go to the effort to move all this crap!"

grumpypug · 07/08/2018 09:49

Good luck with the move @Sunrise888

Going to blast the bedrooms today - clean sheet Tuesday according to The Organised Mum then declutter lots of stuff from my 'to do' list. Dentist, optician, hairdresser appointments etc.

I might, if time, start on my bedroom wardrobe and declutter clothes off to the charity shop.

Halfahunnerstillastunner · 07/08/2018 11:54

grumpypug I see your fridge door and raise you a salad drawer Grin I needed to clean it out as a cucumber had gone a bit gooey, did that, looked at rest of the "full of food cos it's the holidays and everyone is home" fridge and thought nah! Another day! 🙈

Got friends visiting today and tomorrow so not sure how much I'll get done but hoping to still stick with at least one thing a day.

GirlfriendInAKorma · 07/08/2018 13:24

Another small bag dropped off at the charity shop... and old purse that I haven't used for years, some babyish books and some nice dribble bibs that my daughter barely wore.

Need to tackle the boxes in the attic some more - they are many and large...!

StealthNinjaMum · 07/08/2018 13:53

Penelope we didn't take iPads with us so I couldn't really mumsnet. I felt bereft without mumsnet

Thanks nofilter it's good to be back. And welcome back betsy.

You're all doing so well. I have just put a plastic satchel in the charity shop pile. It was a free one dh got on a training course about 10 years ago. I asked him if he wanted it and he didn't know so I hung it on his wardrobe door about three months ago. Now it's on the spare bed in the pile.

Good luck with the move Sunrise. Let us know how it's going. If you get stuck you can always ask one of us to set you a challenge! I had a frantic day once after I foolishly accepted a challenge from SandandSea to get rid of many binbags of stuff in one day.

GirlfriendInAKorma · 07/08/2018 17:15

Good lord, I have been emptying boxes from the attic.

You know the 'it gets worse before it gets better' stage?

That's where I am.

grumpypug · 07/08/2018 18:46

@Halfahunnerstillastunner I'm going to attempt the salad drawer tomorrow. There's a butternut squash pressing up against the front that I really need to get rid of Blush

I've done the bedrooms, cleaned and tidied. Got rid of a few broken toys (slyly, as DH would insist on fixing them) but they're not worth saving.

Been to town with my eldest so decluttered about £150 buying him trainers and new clothes seeing as he insists on growing!! Grin

Betsy86 · 07/08/2018 19:58

Thanks penelops think im watching this thread now i wont lose you all again!
Productive day today:
Bag of clothes to recycling bank
2 black bags of teddys to charity
1 black bag of clothes il never slim into tocharity shop
Couple of pictures to charity
Sold the 2 black bags of dds clothes
Am feeling very pleased about all that!!

Betsy86 · 07/08/2018 20:04

Good luck with the move sunrise, the the attic korma... your braver than me to many spiders hanging about. Luckily for my hoarder mind i have no roof space :)
I still in all this time havent sorted the 6 ikea boxes of paperwork/junk/etc on the shelf downstairs really must do that if could get it down to even 4 neat organised boxes id be happy.
I did bin my old wage slips since was last here so thankyou stealth for the kick up the bum with that GrinFlowers

Gibble1 · 07/08/2018 20:31

I went to return the bike locks and didn’t have the fluffing receipt!
So I came home for tea. No way I could get receipts and get back to shop before it shut as I finished work an hour late today. Will do it tomorrow now.

Halfahunnerstillastunner · 07/08/2018 23:12

Didn't get any decluttering done today as was cleaning then had visitors. Did use up a bottle of bleach and a toilet gel that had been hanging around with a squidge left in each. Nice new shiny ones purchased and into the tidied "cleaning stuff" shelf!
DH also finished another hotel mini bottle (shampoo this time) and I finished a tube of body scrub that's been on the shelf for a while. I'm refusing to buy any more toiletries until we've reduced the stash to a manageable level!

StealthNinjaMum · 08/08/2018 10:17

Before dds came downstairs I was able to find two children's books and a painting to declutter. The painting was a tiny one bought to me by dd2 years ago. I never liked it and it was cluttering a window ledge, I hope she doesn't notice it going.

I know it's three things but there is still so much to go.

OP posts:
grumpypug · 08/08/2018 12:29

So DH and I have a bit of a stand off going.

He's left a bottle of shaving foam on the sink and usually I tidy things away every now and again, but since I've been on school hols I have decluttered and tidied and am keeping it tidy. This bottle of shaving foam is empty. I know it's empty and I'm sure he must do, too. It's moved from one side of the sink to the other and back again. I'd noticed this morning he has put it back on his shelf, with his other toiletries. It will come out again next time he has a shave. Wonder how long it will take him to bin it? Hmm

StealthNinjaMum · 08/08/2018 12:37

grumpypug ooh keep us updated! Why don't you ignore it and see how quickly he deals with it?

Dh had about 15 bottles of beconase hay fever spray and I stuck them on a tray on his bed to tell me which ones were empty. All of them!
