POLL - Do you have a fire extinguisher at home?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 25/05/2007 08:40

And if so where do you keep it?

I am pretty unsure about getting one as I have heard you can actually cause more harm than good if you misuse them.
We have a fire blanket in the kitchen, and smoke alarms in every room, but a friend was horrified that we didn't have an extinguisher. They have four apparntly!

no

or a fire blanket

i do have a fire alarm though!

chopchopbusybusy · 25/05/2007 08:50

I do have one which is wall mounted in the kitchen. I do agree though that they are not necessarily a good idea and a fire blanket is probably best. Your friend has four . Why - do they live next door to the swan vestas factory or something?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 25/05/2007 08:53

lol chop!
They have one in the garage, one in the upstairs and downstairs hall and one in the kitchen.
Slighty ott!

I don't have a fire extinguisher, never occurred to me. My step-dad is a fire fighter, and to the best of my knowledge he and my mum have no fire extinguishers. But if I did have one I'd probably keep it in the kitchen, seems like the most likely starting point for fires.

tarantula · 25/05/2007 09:13

No we dont adn Was told not to when I did fire warden training. We dont have a fire blanket either which we really should get. Have smoke alarms tho both kinds.

kittylette · 25/05/2007 09:16

How'd that happen?

BettySpaghetti · 25/05/2007 09:19

We normally have one in the kitchen cupboard but I think it might still be in the car as we recently went to France, Belgium and Holland (and in some ,if not all?, of those countries you have to carry an extinguisher in the car)

Flower3554 · 25/05/2007 09:24

We have 2 fire extinguishers and 2 smoke alarms.
I each for upstairs and downstairs.

Extinguishers are placed 1 in our bedroom (no quips please) and 1 in the kitchen

Also on the advice of 2 veeerrrry nice firemen who came to do a safety check for us, I take my mobile phone upstairs with me at bedtime and I keep a torch in my bedside drawer.

bigcar · 25/05/2007 09:38

No, but have three smoke alarms. We were told the same as flower, take a mobile phone upstairs at night, keep a torch nearby and also a window key if they lock and door keys if you lock your doors at night.

Chopster · 25/05/2007 09:41

yes, in the kitchen.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 25/05/2007 09:49

But surely the majority of kitchen fires will be from a fat pan, so a fire extinguisher is unsuitable?

I have fire alarms at the top and bottom of the stairs which have the batts changed twice a yr when the clocks change. I also have a extin in the kitchen and a fire blanket again in the kitchen.

McDreamy · 25/05/2007 18:29

Yes we do, went out and bought them as soon as we moved in. Also have extra fire alarms.

we have four fire alarms but no fire blanket. I think i sahll get one now though as it does seem like a good idea. What's the idea of taking a mobile phone upstairs please? and keys?

TheBlonde · 25/05/2007 18:40

No extinguishers or blankets here

Coolmama · 25/05/2007 18:41

one upstairs and 2 downstairs, smoke alarms in all the rooms.

Dogsby · 25/05/2007 18:42

no

jellyjelly · 25/05/2007 18:44

Mackenzie.

Keys in case you have a locked window for your escape route and a mobile in case your phone is downstairs and there is a fire so you can call 999. I have 2, i had a whistle but ds thought it was fun to hide it. Its still hidden.

SoMuchToBits · 25/05/2007 18:45

Yes, loads......but they are all Playmobil ones!

Seriously, no, and no fire blanket, but do have an alarm.

Chugnuts · 25/05/2007 18:48

We have a small one in the kitchen.

edam · 25/05/2007 18:48

No, have put out kitchen fires with damp towels in the past. Have smoke alarms on every floor. Keep window keys hanging on a nail next to the window.

Good tip re mobile, will start doing that. (Also useful if you are ever unlucky enough to have a burgular/intruder... when one broke into my sister's house, he'd pulled the phone out of the socket to delay her calling for help.)

DontCallMeBaby · 25/05/2007 18:48

Extinguisher in the kitchen. Smoke alarm on the landing, functioning; smoke alarm downstairs somewhere, not functioning (we fitted it right outside kitchen door, it goes off whenever I get a sausage within five feet of the grill). Never thought of getting a fire blanket, but I have very calmly put out a fat fire with a wet tea towel (well, calmly whilst shouting 'shit shit shit' at the top of my voice).
