Getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge: Part 3: Are we nearly there yet?

StealthNinjaMum · 09/05/2018 08:45

For 2000 posts a group of messy mumsnetters have been chucking out, selling, recycling and cooking weird cakes.

Are we free of clutter yet? Sadly not.

Thankfully we're here to get support and be told off when we have a relapse and bring more clutter into the house, garages, sheds, gardens.

Newbies are welcome to join us, it's easy we literally just get rid of one thing a day and report back.

7 DVDs today.

I tried to sell them online but most of them hardly generated anything (or even nothing) and the site was buggy so I decided to charity them.

StealthNinjaMum · 02/07/2018 18:48

Well done. I have a big pile of DVDs, some I haven't seen, might see if dh wants to keep them and then chuck them out.

I had a brilliant hour in the Room of Doom (home of paperwork and toys). I shredded credit card statements from 1994 to 1999, dd2s reading journals from reception (this is a big thing for me), threw away some old hardware installation CDs and cassettes and put some cassettes and DVDs in the charity shop pile.

Well done, @StealthNinjaMum ! I kinda regret not getting rid of my DVDs all together, instead of a few here and a few there, as I could have made a few quid, but, it's a process and you can't push the river.

SandAndSea · 02/07/2018 20:08

@Nofilter - So lovely to see your pony photos! Thanks for sharing them. (I couldn't see them on my phone but am now on my PC.)

Nofilter · 02/07/2018 20:42

Glad you agree on the cuteness of the ponies stealth & sand* wow lots of progress!

Booked in the survey with removal company today.

Sorted a few bits with lawyer, perused Mums net, had an afternoon nap (never do this and the heat just got to me) so not a very busy day which I’m peeved about..

Finally have house to myself tomorrow after four weeks of handyman being here..

Will make a list tonight before bed of what I have to do this week following your idea stealth to focus myself.

Plan to start wardrobe tomorrow when DD naps...

UnderTheOakTree · 02/07/2018 21:44

Stealth, I think you might be living in my house... I have that exact same room with the exact same things in... except I don't know where to start with it!

Nofilter · 02/07/2018 22:04

Sorry - thanks for the agreement on cuteness grey

Right, I’ve sorted a list of 18 things so will try and work through this week...

Gibble1 · 02/07/2018 23:40

Day off tomorrow so things will be moving. The stocks will be removed from my hallway tomorrow evening and put in my car so that I can drop them off at the YMCA on Wednesday after work. Night all.

SandAndSea · 03/07/2018 00:06

Night, @Gibble1 !

I've got a bit too excited about the weather tonight (a possible storm coming) so am still up. I have sorted out some more DVDs though!

IHateYourCarpet · 03/07/2018 07:50

The heat has gotten to me! I have done ... NOTHING. It's going to hit 31 degrees again today, but I have a charity bag, and I'm determined to crack on.

IHateYourCarpet · 03/07/2018 07:56

So today;

. Sort the fridge.
. Sort the freezer (meal plan accordingly)
. Sort DS's clothes out, and make a list of what he needs for the next couple of sizes up.
. Fill the charity bag.
. Under the sink.
. DH's junk drawer.
. Sort out the Christmas present stash, figure out what we still need, etc.

I'll check back in constantly for motivation. I've decided I can't look at the pony pictures till I do the list Grin it's a fabulous incentive.

PenelopeFlintstone · 03/07/2018 08:34

IHYCarpet - your list for one day makes me feel dizzy!!!

IHateYourCarpet · 03/07/2018 08:50

I need the distraction Penelope! I should hopefully find out about my appeal for flexible working today, and if DS actually has a nursery place (there's been a massive cock up with that, been told previously he has a place when he doesn't Angry) and you never know, may find out about moving house today too!

SandAndSea · 03/07/2018 10:13

Well done on the list, Carpet. I tend to write mine at night and then forget about them in the morning.

Last night, I sorted out a pile of old DVDs for DP to go through but I'm now looking at the consequent big gap in the bookcase and feeling uncomfortable. I can't think what to put there instead atm. I think I'll put them back and resort to regular reminders instead.

On my to do list is to sort out a will. I've found a solicitor but when I contacted them, their reply was really badly written and it's put me off. I know I'm dragging my feet on this. I just need to get on with it.

I've got about a dozen fb ads ongoing atm. I'm going to go through them and bump them all and reduce a few. I was hoping for some negotiating but I think I might have put people off.

Back later! Grin

PenelopeFlintstone · 03/07/2018 10:20

IHYC - you've certainly got a lot going on!! I hope it all works out just the way you want it to Smile
SandandSea - a will writer who can't write? No wonder you're hesitating! Next!! Grin

Littlelambpeep · 03/07/2018 10:28

Jumping in ... It's several years since I did a major cull (2013 m thread ) Grin

But things have crept back .. mostly I have have managed to keep clutter down but could do with a focus again.

I gave away baby clothes. Mugs (left at work so good home for them) and I am using my nice ones everyday.

Toys - did another cull last night. Put toys that DC don't use so much into the sand pit (mr potato etc) have a garage and few books and toys for charity shop later.

Cleaned all windows and feel on top of things today !!

Later - sorting shoes and scarves.

IHateYourCarpet · 03/07/2018 10:34

OH MY FUCKING ACTUAL FUCK.

I'm waiting in for a big ride along car thing I bought for DS for Christmas, no idea when it'll arrive. I'm in the kitchen. They would have clearly seen me as he walked up the path.

HE STUCK A 'SORRY WE MISSED YOU' NOTE THROUGH THE POSTBOX AND DIDN'T EVEN KNOCK THE DOOR OR RING THE BLOODY BELL.

Cheeky fucking git. I'm fuming. It's massive. Like fuck am I going to go and collect it. How is it easier to not knock the door/ring the bell and heave a massive box back to the van!?

IHateYourCarpet · 03/07/2018 10:36

Full disclosure - this has happened several times before and I've always thought that I maybe just didn't hear the bell/knock. But now I think he's just a cheeky git Angry I'm wondering if he even bothered getting the parcel out.

Gibble1 · 03/07/2018 11:17

It speeds up their delivery time to just leap out and shove a card through- cheeky gits.
A few years ago I ordered a crate for the puppy which didn’t get delivered. I rang the seller and they said there was nobody in so the delivery failed. I was really cross and said I had been in waiting all day at great inconvenience. So they sent me the photo of my house. Except it wasn’t my house. It was a house at the opposite end of our road. I was bloody steaming!

IHateYourCarpet · 03/07/2018 11:35

Charity bag done! Two pairs of shorts, a hideous muslin with cats on it, a dress that'll no longer accommodate the post baby boobs, five books and 48 remaining DVD's CEX wouldn't take Grin

Freezer it transpires, was grim, and full of crap. I ended up hoovering out thousands of freezer burned soya beans, bits of frozen mash and sweetcorn Blush meal planned the next few days, chicken risotto tonight with some frozen chicken fillets and a bag of frozen veg I lovingly pre-prepped months ago. Sausage casserole tomorrow with all the odds and ends of veg and some old sausages. I need to think of a way of using up two bags of frozen shallots I'm not sure how I acquired Hmm ... defrosting some baby food for DS too.

Threw out two shepherds pies from last summer, a box of soup, (defrosting one box to try to make some pasta sauce), a bag of spinach that had gone all soft and gross with freezer burn, a single piece of broccoli that was the same, two bags of old casserole, and a pasta ready meal that tastes like arse.

Glad it's not just me Gibble! It's really pissed me off. Bizarrely, in our old house we used to have a similar issue with all our parcels delivered through Hermes, they used to deliver to number 2 rather than 32. Number 2 was unoccupied, but they used to just sling the parcel over the fence, then stick the note through their door. We used to get photo updates too, of this random door. Took months to sort.

BuffysFavouriteStake · 03/07/2018 11:48

Nofilter gorgeous ponies, you'll have loads of fun with them!

I don't know how you're all keeping so on top of things in this heat. I've been spending my day off lying in front of the fan sucking ice cubes and I'm still too bloody hot

Really must do a bit today, even if it's just putting some washing on.

IHYC pasta ready meal that tastes like arse?!? What on earth was it?!

IHateYourCarpet · 03/07/2018 11:54

Welcome LittleLamb Grin looks like you're doing a fab job already! Have the kids noticed the toys have been relocated Wink? Hope they don't venture back inside! Hiding mugs at work is genius! We have had a sudden influx of hideous football mugs the last two weeks, I'll tell DH they should go live in his desk!

Sand no advice I'm afraid, our bookcase still looks really weird half empty. Considering getting rid and getting shelves, but it's such a beautiful piece of furniture, and all I really have from my pre-DH days. Have you had a look at Pinterest for some inspiration?

Stealth - you make me wish I had a room of doom Grin it sounds like there's lots of therapeutic shredding to do in there. Well done on ditching the reading journals, I think I'll probably be the same over stuff like that though. My mum used to keep everything. Now she's only kept stuff that she thinks is hilarious that she can lovingly mock me for.

Underoak Shock that's an incredible list of accomplishments! I'm also impressed that you make your own juice!

IHateYourCarpet · 03/07/2018 11:57

It was basically macaroni cheese, with some thin pesto sauce, with courgette and onion Confused I think it was from M&S actually. Like a fool, I bought 3 when they were on offer. I had to eat two to decide if tasted rank though. Wouldn't recommend it Buffy!

PurpleFrog · 03/07/2018 12:34

I took Sunday's eBay sale to the PO first thing this morning. On route I also handed in a bag containing 9 items of clothing, 4 books and 2 soft toys to a Charity Shop. I tend to stick mainly to the ones I have already registered for Gift Aid with, but had decided that this one looked a better bet for teenage-size clothes and books. So, I have added another Gift Aid card to my collection.

This morning I ordered a new battery from Amazon for a camera that I would have listed on eBay 10 days ago... if its battery had held any charge! I just bought the fairly expensive Duracell version, not the really expensive Samsung one. Fingers crossed that is the only thing wrong with the camera. That model seems to sell well on eBay. I just hope people will be prepared to pay more for one with a brand new battery! Grin

IHateYourCarpet · 03/07/2018 12:45

Very nice Purplefrog Grin

I'm waiting for DS to have a nap so I can have a weird assorted freezer food lunch, and make a start on his clothes.
