Getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge: Part 3: Are we nearly there yet?

StealthNinjaMum · 09/05/2018 08:45

For 2000 posts a group of messy mumsnetters have been chucking out, selling, recycling and cooking weird cakes.

Are we free of clutter yet? Sadly not.

Thankfully we're here to get support and be told off when we have a relapse and bring more clutter into the house, garages, sheds, gardens.

Newbies are welcome to join us, it's easy we literally just get rid of one thing a day and report back.

Last night I filled the garden waste bin ready for collection today. I concentrated on getting rid of brambles, nettles and holly which are a pain to empty out at the recycling site. There was also room in the landfill bin to put the bin bag from the upstairs landing that I have been using to collect the stuff I have thrown out from the bedrooms. It was nearly half full! I can't remember if that one has been there for 2 weeks or 4! I definitely got rid of one at the end of May with a bin collection, but might have taken one to the recycling site since then.

Tonight I need to sort out some more stuff for selling, and maybe get some clothes ironed and put away. Some of them are destined for the charity bags I have started.

I haven't been very active on the thread recently but I'm still going in the background. I've sorted out some more clothes to sell and today, I've been posting and bumping ads. I could make quite a bit of cash. Crossing fingers people turn up etc.

GreyCloudsToday · 28/06/2018 20:48

Love to see those DIY pics. Both chairs are looking great.

Yesterday I sold two things on eBay including the big wheely filing cabinet - yippee!

The last of the Freecycle bits to go tomorrow. I've pretty much started maternity leave now a little early as my only client is not replying to any emails. So DIY full time from tomorrow - hopefully the progress will be fast. I feel knackered now and I really want to have some rest days too before this kiddo arrives.

BiscuitMachine · 28/06/2018 22:09

Argh

In : 3 new dresses, 7 underwear, 2 pairs of shoes and a cycling top.

Out: one school shirt. Oh dear. Must try harder. We didn’t make it to the tip, but there is always tomorrow.

SandAndSea · 28/06/2018 22:11

Out: Several 'Jehovah Witness' leaflets and a DVD I've never seen in over 10 years.

SandAndSea · 29/06/2018 00:32

5 items of clothing inc some cutoff shorts & PJ bottoms I haven't worn in years.

SandAndSea · 29/06/2018 00:52

I bought a scarf online recently which is now packed up to go back tomorrow. (I haven't been very lucky with my online shopping recently.) This means that I have still not bought/added any clothes this year (apart from the one bra which was a replacement for an old one I chucked).

I also decided to sell more clothes today, inc a couple of bulky coats.

DP and I share a small wardrobe and I used to have those 'space saving, hanging down hoop things' for hangers. They're all hanging there empty now! I might even get rid of them soon. Grin

Gone today: empty tablet bottles, manky plasters, old flea treatment calendar. All medicines have been corralled and are now in their correct place.

IHateYourCarpet · 29/06/2018 11:32

I'm so excited Grin ASDA HAVE A FOOD BANK TROLLEY! As soon as the heat calms down this evening, I have boxes and boxes of perfectly good in date stuff we won't ever eat to take up here.

Nofilter · 29/06/2018 11:53

Hello!

Few days in Shropshire setting up things for our move...

DD nursery confirmed, horse feed supplier and farmer to take awayhorse muck...

We exchange any day now eek!!

We’re just ploughing through now packing everything up, too numerous to list but good progress as we move on 1st August...

Decluttered bank on a Shetland pony for DD yesterday it’s soooo sweet!!

IHateYourCarpet · 29/06/2018 12:34

NoFilter photos of the pony or it didn't happen Grin

StealthNinjaMum · 29/06/2018 13:48

Oh dear I've just had coffee with a friend and sat chatting in the sun. We suddenly realised we'd been chatting for over 3 hours and I've done nothing! I am just going to run around tidying and hope that something appears that I can chuck away as I don't have time to actively look for anything.

A pathetic decluttering activity. While cleaning bathroom decided to declutter by having a cool bath. So used small amounts of a body exfoliator. Then I put a foot mask on so decluttered half a tub of that and some clingfilm. Nothing has gone in the bin, we have run out of milk and I haven't been shopping but at least I smell nice!

UnderTheOakTree · 29/06/2018 17:32

I need to declutter my head today!
Any tips? Confused

GreyCloudsToday · 29/06/2018 19:52

Urgh too hot! Two bags gone on Freecycle though Grin

IHateYourCarpet · 29/06/2018 20:00

Underoak - what's on your mind? I know it's a total cliche, but a problem shared is a problem halved Smile

I find getting it on paper helps. Writing it down, then putting it away somewhere. I used to do a lot of yoga and Pilates which helped.

IHateYourCarpet · 29/06/2018 20:04

Oh and 46 items out today Grin 20 in the bin, and 26 to the food bank.

Need to go shopping for DS tomorrow. He's grown out of all his clothes, but I've just found out a friend is having another baby, so I'be offered her first pick of all DS's bits that he barely bloody wore. So at least his old clothing clutter is only temporary.

I've started Christmas shopping. So I've gained a dog toy, two bottles of wine, three books and a molton brown bath set. I'm panicking a bit! I'm usually done by now Blush

IHateYourCarpet · 29/06/2018 20:12

Stealth I have major envy of your lovely soft feet. Sandals have made mine rank Envy

UnderTheOakTree · 29/06/2018 21:19

Carpet, thankyou, & yes, I do need to write it down - I don't want to derail this thread though!!!

I do think that there's a correlation between a muddly cluttered house & a muddly cluttered mind, so this is good therapy.

Anyway, on a positive note, I got rid of 10 dried up or gloopy bottles of nail polish.

Gibble1 · 29/06/2018 21:30

I’ve decluttered half an hour on the beach in the sea with the woofers. Wonderful peace of mind after a shocker of a day at work. Now off to bed as I’m shattered and have to work tomorrow too.

IHateYourCarpet · 29/06/2018 21:45

There really is underoak! I find of the house is chaos, it really impacts on my mood. Maybe name change and start a thread having a bit of a vent? Plenty of mumsnetters do it!

I'm pretty much done for the day. Just pottering. Can totally relate to having a cluttered mind, I find out Monday of my revised flexible working request has been approved, and if DS has actually gotten into nursery. So I'm just trying to keep myself busy.

StealthNinjaMum · 30/06/2018 11:57

Thanks carpet although I am a bit disappointed with my feet. It was a Lush footmask and it was hard to apply (possibly because it was 4 or 5 years old) and then made a mess of a towel, the floor and the bath. I used about half the tub and I'm now wondering whether to just throw the rest away to avoid all the housework!

Oaktree I hope you're OK.

I may have redeemed myself, after weeks of no progress I just put about 5kg of old school work in the recycling bin. Some items from 2 yrs ago!

SandAndSea · 30/06/2018 18:17

Well done, @lljkk!

I've done a charity shop run today - one and a half big sacks. (Today's item was another DVD.)

StealthNinjaMum · 30/06/2018 20:33

And here I am again. 6 pairs of shoes in the hall. None put away in the cupboard that is four feet away. Once again my house is a tip after one day of my selfish bastard family. Dd2 knocked a plant over yesterday and bless her tried to tidy it and made a mess everywhere on the dining room table (over dd1s homework) which I haven't had time to clear up.

So I am going to have a quick declutter in the dining room and hall and chuck out a tonne of stuff. I can see dh has left a newspaper article that his parents posted to him (yes they send him newspaper articles rather than just email links) and that is going whether he's read it or not. And I bought dd1 two pairs of shoes. The boxes are going to be binned tonight before dd2 sees them and makes ANOTHER craft project that can't be binned. Aghhhh. This house can look so good. How hard is it to just put things away?
