Getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge: Part 3: Are we nearly there yet?

StealthNinjaMum · 09/05/2018 08:45

For 2000 posts a group of messy mumsnetters have been chucking out, selling, recycling and cooking weird cakes.

Are we free of clutter yet? Sadly not.

Thankfully we're here to get support and be told off when we have a relapse and bring more clutter into the house, garages, sheds, gardens.

Newbies are welcome to join us, it's easy we literally just get rid of one thing a day and report back.

Nappy covers gone on eBay for £9 and broken handled suitcase Freecycled.

Unfortunately I accidentally decluttered my bank card on the bus too today Carpet. I realised and cancelled, but someone nice also found it and called the bank which restored my faith in humanity somewhat. Did you get yours cancelled in the end?

I put another coat of paint on the bed frame too.

Hi CMH123

Sounds like everyone made great progress today.

IHateYourCarpet · 16/06/2018 20:00

Ohhhh well done grey!

I searched the car, and the wash bin, gave the places he went a call, then cancelled them both. T'is a pain in the arse losing cards isn't it?

Decluttered 20 pieces of junk, including squashed wrapping paper, out of my Christmas present stash area. Then had a quick go over the bookcase, it had tons of empty old envelopes for some reason on it ShockConfused

DS and DH are both in bed. Gives me some peace for sewing and maybe sorting the dining room.

NCPuffin · 16/06/2018 20:28

Got rid of the rag bag today - had counted some of the things that were in there previously, but happy nonetheless, and have another £5 H&M voucher as well! Forgot to take a picture though!

IHateToCashew · 16/06/2018 20:31

Ohhh bugger Puffin! I forgot H&M did the clothes recycling thing! I've been waiting for charity bags for no reason!

Taggy toy made. Currently living in my bra. I'm hoping to trade it with DS for my dressing gown.

IHateYourCarpet · 16/06/2018 20:32

Oh. And that's 2 scraps of fabric and the ribbon from a notice board I never used gone :) board is in the bin now.

Nofilter · 16/06/2018 21:01

Hello fellow de-clutterers..

Sorted through my whole dressing table and got a big bin bag full of old products, make up, jewellery and the like. Condensed into a neat Perspex drawer unit I can use while dressing table goes into garage to make room for boxes to be stored...

Been picking out bits and pieces from drawers as I’m doing daily things like cooking and chucking out the baby spoons and bits of ribbon, odd birthday candles and god knows what from the kitchen junk drawers!

DD has chicken pox so we are stuck indoors. She’s fine if a little grumpy so far... cabin fever!

UnderTheOakTree · 16/06/2018 21:29

Didn't end up doing anything today as I'd picked up the bug that the kids have had, so I watched Practical Magic on the sofa & had a little snooze instead!

However, I did take the kitchen compost bin out!

Sparrowlegs248 · 16/06/2018 22:08

Failed to do anything more this evening but have made a list for tomorrow when the children are at their dad's. I'll make up for it then!

IHateYourCarpet · 16/06/2018 22:15

Pillow case made. I made a vague start on the dining room, but so much of it is boxes of stuff DH bought home from his childhood bedroom and I have no idea where to start. I counted 17 notebooks Hmm who needs that many!? There's tons of old paperwork, photos, mugs... all sorts. I need him to go through it with me really.

Oak Sad there seems to be tons of bugs going around at the moment. Everyone I know with kids seems to have something! I hope you feel better soon.

IHateYourCarpet · 16/06/2018 22:17

It's funny isn't it filter Grin the random crap we all just stick in any old drawer. Sounds like you're doing brilliantly though!

Care to share the list lotta? I'm incredibly nosey!

Cupoteap · 16/06/2018 22:28

I need some positive vibes for tomorrow pls, going to spend the day sorting out the dining room/ living room. One end is a dumping ground Confused I am determined!

Good luck to anyone else

IHateYourCarpet · 16/06/2018 22:44

You can do it Cup!

Why don't you update us with every 15 items you tidy/throw away/donate etc? We can try to keep you motivated!

Nofilter · 16/06/2018 22:52

I know ihate I LOL at some of the ideas I’ve had - such as freeze batch cooking and ordering these peg things that hold plastic freezer bags and stickers and then never used them! Bleurgh!

Good look cups Ill watch out for your 15 item updates - think how amazing you’ll feel after it’s done!!

I’ve cluttered up the kitchen with a Peppa Pig fish tank and two fish - promised DD a while ago and she kept reminding me so I’ve just added another live animal to the list of moving - #great. They are really relaxing though and rather cute!

Sparrowlegs248 · 16/06/2018 23:39

Carpet my decluttering is so much easier now I'm on my own. H is a hoarder and went berserk if I touched his stuff. My list consists of the boxes (6!!) in the corner of ds room. Mostly my books I think, so moving them downstairs. Make space under stairs for them (by decluttering under there ) Empty playpen of the accumulated crap and sort. Toy box. Bag of cards , some of which are ones to keep for ds (1st Xmas etc) but most to go. I think that'll do amongst everything else I have to do!

Nofilter · 17/06/2018 00:10

Ooh love a list!

Sounds like a fair bit to get through Not but cleansing...

I’d like to sort through two boxes of clothes tomorrow then tape up all the boxes of clothes and shoes and get my brother to put them in the garage for me along with the dressing table.. that would clear SO much space and it’s almost a whole room done (box room that was just a dressing room).

Need to order some huge strong boxes on wheels for my tack cupboard contents to go into for when the horses arrive for the wagon too...

I’m going to stop there as I’ll drown myself in a big list...

Night x

PenelopeFlintstone · 17/06/2018 01:28

I'm counting algae as my item for the day. Grin
Fair enough, Sand! Sounds like it was a bit of work so should definitely count. Grin

PenelopeFlintstone · 17/06/2018 03:45

Playroom session done.
3 carrier bags of crap.
One basket of things still in the room but destined for the charity shop.

In case you're all imagining this awful playroom, I probably should say that although I call it the playroom, it's a sort of extension that's either too hot or too cold to use much so has turned into a junk room. This has largely been done by DD who has deposited a decade's worth of toys and little girl junk in there.

Just in case you were wondering about where I let little kids play amongst so much rubbish! They're teenagers now Smile

shinny · 17/06/2018 04:00

Im popping in as got 10 days to finish my declutter before we move.

Id forgotten about the kitchen drawers....

So far Ive got rid of 8 big carrier bags of clothing/shoes to charity. I have a bag of half used perfumes/makeup etc for a friends kids and I am going to the charity shop with about 6 bags of odds and ends including unused wallpaper (??) and so much stationary....

I will be selling text books next week and have huge amounts of paper for recycling. Can't wait til I see the back of the bags/boxes that are lying around.

Our place is small and we moved 2 years ago so a good declutter happened then but really its something I have to keep on top of in order for it not to take over life. Its hard work however I find it hugely satisfying.

sandgrown · 17/06/2018 09:22

Finally took a bag of stuff, that has been in my boot for two months, to the charity shop !

sandgrown · 17/06/2018 09:32

Just remembered I emptied a bag of junk out of my car. I had promised someone a lift and was a bit ashamed at the amount of stuff I had accumulated . On a plus side if I was ever stranded I would be self sufficient. I had water , blankets and a tin of baked beansGrin

UnderTheOakTree · 17/06/2018 09:33

sandgrown it's so satisfying to do something like that, isn't it?

I often end up waiting to do a charity shop run because I haven't got enough to make it worth it... but today, inspired by this wonderful thread, I am going to go on a detour to do just that!

NCPuffin · 17/06/2018 10:53

Ihatetocashew I do separate bags for rags and charity - the rag bag is only for things the charity shop wouldn't want, e.g. old underwear and cleaning cloths and stained clothing.

Tip to stop clutter entering the house in the first place: We got a sticker for our front door on eBay, saying we don't want free papers, leaflets and charity bags.

SandAndSea · 17/06/2018 11:23

Today's items include some marbles and a tired bath mat. I'm also planning on renewing some sealant (which I have an irrational compulsion to avoid doing).

NCPuffin · 17/06/2018 13:07

Returned a book of knitting patterns to SMIL, who had lent it to me.

UnderTheOakTree · 17/06/2018 13:40

2 boxes & 1 bag to the charity shop! Yay! Smile
