About to redo kitchen and always wanted an American style fridge freezer? Any advice or recommendations welcome!

I have a Bosch one & love it

Beware of getting sucked in by ice maker or water cooler as they take up so much of the freezer space

mommybear1 · 08/04/2018 10:43

I also have a Bosch one it's my second one (due to house move left the old one) love it but as the other poster has said freezer space is limited we have a second freezer (not due to this just an old workhorse of a freezer that we had pre the Bosch ones!). Love mine

I chose one without a water /ice dispenser as I didn't want to lose space and none of the family are keen on ice cold drinks anyway.
It has an internal ice thing but not an automatic one

We got an LG and I’m going to change it to a normal 50/50 fridge freezer, I was very disappointed with it, fridge is big but the freezer is just not big enough, also it looks huge even in our enormous kitchen, our delivery men had to take the kitchen door off to get it in the kitchen and because of health and safety they couldn’t bring it in though the back garden because there was a step in through the patio doors so took twice as long.

I would say go and look at them first before you buy it one, everybody is different but they’re not for me.

We have a Samsung large American fridge freezer with French doors. It does have an ice maker which does take up space but the fridge is definitely big enough for us. The freezer has two drawers but we do have a large freezer elsewhere which is full so we don't rely only on the kitchen freezer. I love the ice and cold filtered water, we've had it 3 years and I wouldn't change it but it was expensive.

woodlanddreamer · 08/04/2018 20:16

Get one with French doors otherwise the freezer is too narrow. You will probably need another freezer as well

MikeWyzowski · 08/04/2018 20:17

I have a Whirlpool one for the past 10 years and really dislike it. It has ice and water which the kids use but is absolutely not necessary. The freezer is ridiculously small: there's only one shelf that can hold a frozen pizza for example and that would hold two max. So that's the width of the freezer and the depth at it's deepest shelf (the rest are more shallow) the fridge part is okay but even at that it's just an awkward shape. I wish I had gone for one with double door fridge and freezer drawers.

NoodieRoodie · 08/04/2018 20:20

We looked at them but realised that we wouldn't be gaining any more freezer space compared to our existing fridge freezer. We went for a matching larder fridge and larder freezer which gives us plenty of space (family of 5). A lot of people i talked to who have American ones also have a freezer in the garage and as we don't have a garage and the shed is at the bottom of the garden that wouldn't have been practical for us.

PeonyTruffle · 08/04/2018 20:24

We inherited ours from MIL. The fridge is huge and I love it but the freezer side is really narrow and can barely get stuff in it.

I would much rather have a normal fridge/freezer instead of this monstrosity!

afrikat · 08/04/2018 20:29

We have a Samsung one and I love it so much. I find the freezer space enormous compared to our old integrated fridge / freezer. It's my favourite thing about our new kitchen

ihatethecold · 08/04/2018 20:40

I’m about to buy one for my new kitchen.
I’m getting one without a water/ice dispenser.
I’m also making sure it will have a large freezer by checking this on the spec before I buy it.

ihatethecold · 08/04/2018 20:41

What are French doors?

CuntPuffin · 08/04/2018 20:42

Another vote for Samsung one with French doors. We were already plumbed for ice/water when it needed replacing, so we went with that option.

LadyFarnborough · 08/04/2018 20:46

We have a Kenwood one. Bought on a budget as were having to buy all new white goods due to house move but I'm really pleased with it. Has got loads of freezer space, much more than some of the more expensive brands.

Shadow666 · 08/04/2018 20:50

French door means that it has two doors split down the middle rather than one big door. We have a French door type as we don’t have a huge amount of room in our kitchen. We also have the ice dispenser, which we love. I would love more freezer space though.

SorrelForbes · 08/04/2018 20:52

We've got a Samsung with a showcase door and integrated water and ice dispensers. Loads of fridge and freezer space and we love it.

AvoidingDM · 08/04/2018 20:53

We have a Samsung one with water & ice. The water / ice bit is built into the freezer door so not loosing the top shelf for it.

I find the freezer plenty big enough. I'd think we could cope with the fridge being smaller.

We are a family of 4, with small kids.

pardharty · 08/04/2018 20:54

Definitely get the Samsung one with French doors, it's brilliant and much more space inside than my old one.

Ski40 · 08/04/2018 20:59

I have a black Fridgemaster one. I agree freezer space is disappointing in them , I expected better tbh. But I love it and will never go back to a standard fridge. I love making magnets for it and organizing inside with nice baskets from Lakeland, which I tie seasonal labels to. Blame Pinterest, I'm a sad sad creature 😂 sorry..

samatamfabahaba · 08/04/2018 21:15

We have the Samsung Family Hub. It's plumbed in but the ice and water bits aren't huge and bulky so there's still loads of space for food. The shelves move around for different needs and half the freezer can turn into a fridge if you need it to. It has the internet and a calendar and all kinds of crazy shit. It's amazing. Ridiculous but amazing.

LittleWingSoul · 09/04/2018 00:35

@Ski40 Probably sadder still is that I would really like to see the inside of your fridge now...!

Ski40 · 09/04/2018 01:07

@LittleWingSoul I am in bed now but I promise tomorrow I will happily reach new levels of sadness and take a picture of it if you like 😂😂 x

LizzieDarcy1907 · 09/04/2018 19:32

We've got a Samsung side by side American style, and to be honest it's very plasticky/poor quality internal fittings. We've replaced about 4 of the door storage compartments as they've broken from the weight of jars/sauces and had to replace both veg drawers. They just aren't up to years of wear. We had a Maytag before and it lasted 12 years with nothing replaced. Our Samsung is 3 years old..... my other bugbear is constantly replacing the water filter. It's supposed to last 6 months but ours pings every 3 and I'm sick of the £20 replacements to stop it!!
Make sure you go and look at what you buy. We bought online and I desperately regret it.

Alfiemoon1 · 10/04/2018 10:25

We had one but found the freezer small so when it broke I bought a French door style one

Decanter · 10/04/2018 10:32

If you have space, I’d recommend getting two free standing appliances - one fridge, one freezer. Gives the look of an american style but with much more space. I don’t like the look of the ice/water dispensers. Ours are AEG.
