Join me in getting rid of at least one thing a day decluttering challenge?

I am trying to declutter, starting with our loft and garage both of which need some work doing so need to be a lot emptier! After they're done I want to declutter the rest of the house. I've already got rid of loads of stuff but I'm starting to lose motivation alone!

We have quite strict rules for what we can put in rubbish so I'm selling, free cycling, taking stuff to the clothes bank etc. At least one thing a day. I'm hoping to be done by Christmas!

Anyone want to join me?

Start in the room that you're in.
1- get 4 bin bags/boxes for rubbish, recycling, charity and to sell.

2- go through the room & fill the 1st bin bag with rubbish

3- then fill the 2nd bag/box with recyclables

4- then go through your stuff & decide what you want to send to charity & what you want to sell into two piles.

5-I keep the high value items to sell and everything else goes to charity. It's easier this otherwise I end up with too much to sell for too little value.

Repeat for all other rooms. I was going to sort through the paperwork but my cat has just parked herself on my lap!

fireflame · 12/02/2018 20:23

I done this last Xmas and sold so much stuff on shpock
Cheap cheap cheap, made a little fortune from stuff that I no longer wanted
Clothes household items etc even put stuff on there "free to collect" make me an offer
For me was a great way of "getting rid" and not worrying about having to drop things off here and there. 😃

PenelopeFlintstone · 14/02/2018 08:36

I'm back. Today I've thrown out more old shoes. You?

StealthNinjaMum · 14/02/2018 16:02

An embarrassing day. I went to the library to borrow books rather than buy even more and got told off because my library cards didn't work and one had an ancient £2.50 fine. We have 3 (me and dds) and I am always losing them (just around the house) and getting new ones so i got told off because I had cancelled these ones before. Anyway they took the cards away from me and destroyed them there and then (I felt like a criminal!) and I said I'd look for the correct ones at home. So that's two library cards / bits of clutter gone!

More positively I am getting about £50 for my missold PPI claim I was able to make a couple of weeks ago when I sorted through old paperwork. It's not clear how much it is from the letter but I am pleased as it was for a credit card and I only paid about £10 PPI in total. I'll be getting a cheque in the next 28 days.

I have chucked out a few bits of old craft sets like sequins and some dried paint brushes so not a huge achievement but better than nothing.

Gibble1 · 15/02/2018 13:00

Sluggish today as am ill. All I’ve done so far is pulled stuff off tv unit to clean it. Think I have 2 bits of wire that can go though.

SandAndSea · 17/02/2018 19:18

I'm still going, albeit a bit slowly atm. I was quite pleased today: I was going to throw some trousers out as they were faulty and I've had them a while. Instead, I took them back to the shop and got a refund. Ker-ching!!

StealthNinjaMum · 17/02/2018 19:53

Really slow for me but not surprising. I have taken dds out loads and not done any housework. I have put some old shoes in the pile and thrown away some papers but the house looks a mess so I'm going to spend tomorrow doing washing and normal housework and can start decluttering again on Monday with A Big To Do List which I might write in the bath tonight.

DinkyDaisy · 17/02/2018 22:04

We are drowning in clutter. Small house embarrassingly full. Not organised mess either.
Need to sort out before kids think normal.
Where to start is an issue as as a whole just overwhelming.
DH and I bad as each other really though I worry about it and he doesn't see a problem. I will have to take lead with this.
Guess should look back at this thread for advice...

Panda81 · 17/02/2018 22:09

Hello, may I please join all you inspiring declutterers?!

I've read this thread from the very start over the past week and already been inspired to actually act on my pile of 'stuff' to get rid of.

My biggest problem is having a pile of stuff to sell but never getting round to even trying to sell it! So it just sits there. Until now!

I'm also a chronic churner. I'm forever 'sorting' but never actually seem to get anywhere. Things are about to change!

I've already taken two large bags to the charity shop and have also sold a few things in the past week. Including a meerkat toy I got for free! Bonus.

look forward to keep hearing of your progress and sharing mine!

Gibble1 · 17/02/2018 22:24

I sold a stereo today. Just delivered it as she only lived 5 minutes away and the bonus is that I have it to her in a bag for life so that’s 2 things gone 😂.
Also sold my chest of drawers today but will be delivering it on Wednesday. Am buying a new one tomorrow though so kind of even.

squiggletea · 17/02/2018 22:53

Gibble, you got rid before you took in the new though. That’s fantastic organisation.

This half term we’ve got rid of 4 bags to the charity shop and a huge black bag in the wheelie bin that’s been hiding in the garage since Christmas.

Have resisted buying DCs clothes so that’s a net win really!

Gibble1 · 17/02/2018 23:01

Not quite squiggletea, but close enough! I was just going to wait until I had sold the old ones before I got the new but have to go to the city tomorrow to take DS for a jamboree meeting so won’t waste the fuel and will get the new one while I’m that way.

lljkk · 17/02/2018 23:05

I have a broken suitcase (handle is broken so you can't pull it, along fine in every other way) I want to give away rather than take to landfill.

Nobody wants it. Sigh.

I retired 2 swimsuits this week. It's a start, right?!!

PenelopeFlintstone · 18/02/2018 00:58

lljkk - could you use it to store out-of-season clothes or something else?
Yes - it IS a start. This thread is one item a day!! :D

PenelopeFlintstone · 18/02/2018 05:57

I didn't get rid of that laptop in the end, but three carrier bags of clothes have left the house today.

Panda81 · 18/02/2018 10:20

Got a friend coming over for lunch today, means I need to tidy up my clutter piles, argghh!!

Keep thinking how nice it would be to be clutter free and not have to panic and rush round whenever someone comes over.

SandAndSea · 18/02/2018 23:28

Just had a nibble on one of my sales posts! I've got someone coming round tomorrow. Lovely jubbly!!

Gibble1 · 18/02/2018 23:50

Went to Ikea today to get the chest of drawers. They don’t sell it in my store so I have to pay to get it delivered. £19!

StealthNinjaMum · 18/02/2018 23:57

Welcome dinky. I found easy areas to declutter were children's clothes and toys, food, kitchen items, bathroom cabinets. I started out sort of doing fly lady (but just couldn't handle her telling me what to do) and would set a timer for 15 minutes to do an area. More often than not I would get into it and spend longer. I also kept a log of everything that left the house - so far about 400 carrier bags worth of stuff have left the house and garage in 13 months. Now I set a timer for half an hour most days (when dc are at school that is) and usually do more.

I didn't explicitly tell dh I was decluttering but things are better organised, surfaces are clearer and we can find things so he has noticed. He is a much more of a hoarder than me and when I suggest getting rid of his big stuff (broken computer, old suitcases) he agrees now whereas before he never did.

Good work panda. I have a six foot by two foot pile of stuff I want to sell hidden behind the settee in the sitting room. I hate doing it but will start again in a few days when I have finished the paperwork. panda you will get to the stage where having guests over is easy I promise. I'm in slight chaos at the moment because of half term but I'll just spend half an hour tomorrow tidying the hall, dining room and kitchen and we'll be guest ready.

I have just put another 10 books in the pile to go so that's about 30 this week. i think tomorrow will be an admin and tidying day but hopefully on Tuesday I'll have time to take another load of bags to charity shops.

SandAndSea · 19/02/2018 01:32

Can't sleep so have posted another ad. Halo

CapricornWithAUnicornHorn · 19/02/2018 07:18

Right so I posted a week ago about doing one room each week so I could have a clutter free house by summer and I am happy to say I have stuck by that plus extra!

My living room has been decluttered. To be honest I just had to sort out wires and do some small DIY projects - BUT it really motivated me to crack on with the rest of the house.
I made a start on the downstairs toilet and hallway by sorting through boxes and putting things away. A fuck load of cardboard (from boxes) is ready for recycling too which is great as I don't have to look at them anymore. And I have put out some ornaments that have been in storage.
I went through my clothes, accessories, make up, beauty products and shoes and threw out so much. I'm not exaggerating probably 75-80% of what I originally owned. I have made a start on ordering new clothes and make up so I can start afresh. And I'm being very very careful with what I do buy. I'm only getting things I actually need and will use almost daily.

PenelopeFlintstone · 19/02/2018 08:26

You have been busy, Capricorn!! I wish I'd been standing nearby to catch the clothes and make-up!!
I need to find something to get rid of today.....

SandAndSea · 19/02/2018 10:50

Well done, Capricorn. It sounds great!

I've got 2 buyers, hopefully, coming today. I'm about to start posting the next thing for sale.

Stickmangate · 19/02/2018 11:42

Can I join? I've been reading these type of threads for a while and decided before Christmas to make January the month our bedroom was sorted/de cluttered.

Well I made a good start but it's not finished Blush however today I took 8 bags of clothes (had been hanging around for a couple of years) to a cash for clothes place and got £26 😃.

I also cashed in some lotto tickets that were hanging around.

Hoping to get dc making later and can use that time to clear out some of the art supplies

Have a charity bag upstairs that I need to get done and some bits to sell.

Dh also took a boot load of rubbish from the garden to the tip this morning.

StealthNinjaMum · 19/02/2018 12:31

I've had a productive morning of tidying, washing, changing beds, admin. I've chucked another couple of books into the charity shop pile, a favourite dress of dd2 that she is far too big for and a 2017 calendar. I have a long list for this week that I probably won't finish but it's a step in the right direction.

Welldone capricorn and stickmangate.
