Join me in getting rid of at least one thing a day decluttering challenge?

I am trying to declutter, starting with our loft and garage both of which need some work doing so need to be a lot emptier! After they're done I want to declutter the rest of the house. I've already got rid of loads of stuff but I'm starting to lose motivation alone!

We have quite strict rules for what we can put in rubbish so I'm selling, free cycling, taking stuff to the clothes bank etc. At least one thing a day. I'm hoping to be done by Christmas!

Anyone want to join me?

Wow, 2nd hand spot cream on Ebay is a thing you can buy.
I Posted a pr of skates this morning (ebay sale).

PenelopeFlintstone · 15/01/2018 21:03

SandandSea - I knew the ukelele was gaining popularity so, while I wouldn't have advertised one without strings, I thought someone might take up an offer of three free ones, but nobody did. It's gone now. Rubbish collection was yesterday. Shame, I know.

lljkk - well, I'm not sure. You'd have to look but there are certainly used beauty products and perfume.

ScattyMcScatty · 16/01/2018 11:40

Used spot cream Confused madness.

I've got another four bin bags of unused toys/games and more clothes to get out of the house so will take them whilst I'm dropping dd at nursery this afternoon.

I've not done anything except maintenance for a couple of days, dd had her new ears switched on yesterday (cochlear implants, thank god for the NHS and their fabulous workforce!) so today has been spent dancing to Disney songs, tapping spoons over every surface we can find and her laughing every time I say no (seems we've already found a favourite word Grin). Will go through the baking cupboard whilst she's out and see if we can thin it out a little! Hope everyone is having a great day!

StealthNinjaMum · 16/01/2018 12:53

A slow day. I've been mumsnetting and facebooking and have done nothing other than put some child pyjamas and my jeans into a pile for rags as they have holes in them. I hate the thought of doing paperwork so much but in a minute I'll spend another half an hour doing it. (Once I get started I'll probably spend an hour and get into it.)

What a lovely update scatty, dd sounds lovely, and well done for 4 bin bags.

Penelope sad to throw away a musical instrument but I've heard of people destroying pianos because they can't give them away.

Gibble1 · 16/01/2018 22:37

Lovely new ears. How fabulous 😁🎊

ScattyMcScatty · 17/01/2018 10:25

Managed to get few wee bits out yesterday after all. Tonight I'm going to cull the skincare a little. Does women's aid take unused skincare items does anyone know? Not sure where else I could take them. Currently on the fridge there's a light shade for ds' room and a basket of who knows what crap so I should have some more out shortly, hurrah!

I'm so happy, dd has taken to wearing them and seems so happy. She's not the only one Grin

StealthNinjaMum · 17/01/2018 13:47

Scatty what is that thing? Have you just got rid of it? (Hope it isn't dd's favourite toy!)

We have a women's refuge that take unused skincare items so it might be worth trying. If they're nice brands you could try to sell them?

I did a load of filing and shredding yesterday and will be doing more today. I have got lots of folders of filed papers and it is getting much easier to pick up random papers and find homes for them. I'm aware that i will need to shred lots more than I am doing but at the moment it is enough for me to have them in the same place. The Room of Doom is looking much clearer but there is still lots to do.

ScattyMcScatty · 17/01/2018 18:58

Well done on the paperwork stealth, always a boring and time consuming job. No wonder it builds up.

Ha it's dds build a bear troll, Poppy. She's been to every appointment, surgery and we got her cochlear implants like dd so she's happy she has someone just like her I'm probably more thrilled as dd seems to be taking having hearing at last in her stride

I've decided tomorrow to tackle one side of the landing cupboard, it's the one place in my house I actually hate. It's sectioned into two sides and has some deep shelves at the top. Last time I went in there were random tools, games, dhs punch bag, a sewing machine and bags and bags of outgrown clothes/clothes/general crap, paint and just all sorts.

Where do you store paint? We tried the shed but when I came to touch up 6 months later it hadn't kept well. Do you think it'd keep ok if I took a little pot out of each room colour for touch ups? I'm always a little wary of completely letting go of a colour after I forgot the shade in ds' room and ended up redecorating! Blush

StealthNinjaMum · 17/01/2018 20:41

Ha ha I feel like such an idiot, I didn't know what a cochlear implant looks like. I didn't spot them on the toy.

We keep paint in a utility room cupboard but every room in the house has the same colour so it doesn't take much space. Perhaps you could buy tester pots?

I ended up doing a friend a favour and looking after her dd so spent my afternoon tidying dds bedroom and the kitchen rather than doing paperwork. I managed to chuck out two 2017 wall calendars so I've got rid of something.

Betsy86 · 17/01/2018 20:59

Just catching up on the bits since i last checked in. Well done no matter how big or small the declutter has been every bit helps!
I whitewashed the walls in front room washed the curtains and they didnt shrink yippppeeeeeee lol!!
Got a bargain new hoover so the broken crappy henry needs to go now.
Have white paint left tempted to white wash the kitchen but really cant be bothered yet. Also got some paint for my bedroom going to cover some of the tatty walls.
Piled all the stuff i need to sell and get rid of into cupboard and wow its annoying did go to tip again though which was satisfying. Flagging tonight though cant be bothered with anything. Hows your days been?xx

Gibble1 · 17/01/2018 23:59

Didn’t get rid of anything today as I finished work late and got home to find that the stuff for making bracelets had arrived so I learned how to make bracelets and made 6. Hopefully they will all sell well.
DS is just over halfway towards his target for WSJ24 😁

Gibble1 · 17/01/2018 23:59

No, I lied! I got rid of a framed cross stitch picture today- sold on Facebook at the weekend.

StealthNinjaMum · 18/01/2018 15:21

An hour and a half of filing and shredding. It's very satisfying watching the recycling bag of shredded paper fill up and its very noticeable (to me) that the piles of papers around the room have got smaller. Having said that I am very, very bored with paperwork.

I hope everyone else is well.

Gibble1 · 18/01/2018 17:09

Hope nobody suffered too much damage last night. We’ve lost the top of the wood box. I’m taking that as a positive as we will HAVE to replace it with a decent wood store now.
I have a bag of stuff leaving tonight back to cubs. Also threw away a hat. It had holes in. Lots of.

abitoflight · 18/01/2018 17:51

Today I sorted out dogs cupboard - treats chews etc - pile to gift to my sisters dogs who will eat anything
Also dog shampoo and conditioner for a friend gone
3 water pistols and 4 jar/ mug things and book of chocolate mug cakes for microwave - both efforts an appalling use of food (wasted) and mess. It's in pile for charity shop but don't really want to inflict it on anyone else
Pile of packaging gone Grin

Gibble1 · 18/01/2018 22:56

Used up a packet of freezer bags to put beads into. Have sold 1 bracelet. Only another 26 to sell before we break profit!

StealthNinjaMum · 19/01/2018 14:46

Another dull update! More paperwork. Emptied the contents of a box and filed and shredded. I'm getting there.

SandAndSea · 20/01/2018 21:31

Well, Ninja, I'm with you as I actually started on my paperwork today, at last!!! It feels good to have broken into it. I just love binning those envelopes! Grin

Gibble1 · 21/01/2018 00:19

3 pairs of knickers eaten by darn dog today.
Lamp sold on Facebook.

StealthNinjaMum · 21/01/2018 15:54

sandandsea well done. I am probably half way through mine and it is a good feeling.

Didn't do anything yesterday because on Friday I convinced myself I was poorly with Australian flu - fortunately it was just a headache - and I napped a lot and did nothing. So today I have found 12 books. Books will be hard. I have lots from my first degree (academic) and my masters (vocational) that I feel like I should keep but haven't looked at in 20 years. I also have lots of classics I could probably get free online but I just like having them! Also dh has hundreds he won't want to get rid of. Books are an area where in theory we don't need to get rid of any because we have a wall of bookshelves that still has space but as with most things I want a minimalist life. At some point we'll have to move - possibly in the next year if dh gets a new job - but even if it's not for 15 years I just want to get of it.

Cleanerswin · 21/01/2018 16:39

I’m on a roll this week, have freegled and gumtreed and charity shopped a whole room full of stuff so I have £90 I didn’t have last week and a nice clear room with no furniture in it!

TheGrumpySquirrel · 21/01/2018 16:45

1 bag of clothes to charity today and 1 pair of trousers sold on eBay. Also packed away all the clothes that are currently too small for me (am fat/preggo) so they aren't cluttering up my wardrobe (and taunting me!)

StealthNinjaMum · 22/01/2018 11:33

More paperwork done. Threw out a load of instruction manuals for 10 - 20 years old electrical items - videos, TVs, stereos, magi mixes. We actually still have these electrical items and they work! (Yup my kids watch Disney videos that I had as a child.)

I also threw out a lipstick. I was almost brand new but has never suited me.

PenelopeFlintstone · 22/01/2018 11:55

Ladies, I've been a bit quiet but I will be back! I'm currently in Phuket so can't declutter anything from home but might get rid of anything that I don't wear out of my suitcase.

SandAndSea · 22/01/2018 14:44

Ninja, we seem to have a lot in common. I'm allowing myself to keep most of my books - they make a home for me and I love my bookcase.

I'm working on my tax return atm. (When I'm not on here.)
